Review: LEGO Build a Minifigure (BAM) Exclusives Q2 2022

As I alluded to in my post about the new White/Silver Falcons minifigures a couple of days ago, I’m now happy to share a quick review of all the new LEGO Build a Minifigure exclusives that are part of the Q2 (Quarter 2) 2022 release!

As a strategy to attract people into LEGO stores, LEGO release fresh new (and sometimes exclusive) minifigures into the Build a Minifigure (BAM) stations at LEGO Stores, and the new Q2 2022 BAM figs have been starting to show up from 1 May 2022.

If you want to get your hands on these, check your local LEGO Store, or if you’re in Australia and can’t get to a LEGO Certified Store, you can order them from the LEGO Certified Store’s website.

Here’s a look at the new Build a Minifigure Q2 2022 selection, with some really awesome throwbacks to classic characters!

The Knight

As featured in this post, here’s a look at The Knight – an awesome army-builder that will delight LEGO Castle and Medieval fans.

The chain mail armour and red capes are a really nice touch, and the White/Silver Falcon crest on the back.

This is going to be one of the most sought-after Build a Minifigure characters, as it’s a quick (but pricey) way to rapidly amass an army of these.

The Black Falcons shield they come with is also a nice addition, even if it doesn’t make much sense with the new sigil at the back.

Still think these are a competing, or splinter Black Falcons faction!

The Wizard

Here’s The Wizard, a newly updated for 2022 take on the classic LEGO Blue Wizard. He comes with a brand new blue Wizard Hat, which has grey hair fused to it, and his torso and legs are highly detailed, with a star and moon pattern, as well as great accessories like a mysterious pouch, keys and even a brown shawl.

Here’s a look at the Wizard’s back printing, which has more of that starry print – I especially love how it goes across his robes as well.

The Tan Owl with spread wings is a new variant, and so far exclusive to Build a Minifigure.

Wizards have been a staple of LEGO’s Castle, from 1993’s 6020 Magic Shop, which saw the debut of Majisto. Here’s a comparison of the OG Majisto, and Series 12’s Wizard, to showcase just how LEGO Wizards have evolved over the years.

Up next in the trio of Medieval Build a Minifigure characters is The Princess, which has a Japanese-inspired Kimono dress, with a shuriken necklace. Her official accessory is the crown, but I would recommend picking a more substantial element.

If you feel her torso is familiar, you’d be right as it’s a repurposed torso from the Mermaid from the now-retired Vidiyo Bandmates Series 2!

Unfortunately, unlike the Wizard, the back of her sloped dress doesn’t have any printing, but there is back printing on her torso, with 2 Koi fish in a ying & yang pattern down her back.

Her alternate face also has her eyes shut with a smile on her face.

Here are the trio of LEGO Castle-inspired minifigures, which work well for a 3-pack Build a Minifigure pack – I really like the updated blue Wizard, and the new tan-coloured owl, but it’s clear that The Knight is going to be extremely popular, especially among fans of the Black Falcons, or if you find joy with army-building.

The Sheriff

From LEGO Castle, we now head to LEGO Western, with a new Sheriff minifigure. He comes with a wide-brimmed cowboy hat, which was last seen in Series 18’s Cowboy Costume Guy, a brand new torso with ammo bandoliers, and a wanted poster.

Update: thanks to Jawa for pointing out that it’s actually a recycled Jawa torso!

The dual-moulded legs are really nice for brown boots, and the torso is generic enough to be used for all sorts of adventure-y type custom minifigure designs.

Here’s a look at the back printing.

And here’s a look at the Wanted Poster, which has a mysterious female outlaw or bandit on it, for a reward of 5? 5,000? Not sure if that’s a decimal or comma.

If you’re a fan of LEGO Western and Cowboys, the Sheriff is a great new modern Western minifigure, that reminds me a little of spaghetti westerns, especially Clint Eastwood from The Good, The Bad And The Ugly.

The Outlaw

The wanted criminal is The Outlaw, a diminutive female Outlaw, who is brandishing some dynamite, ready to blow up a Western Saloon or stage coach.

Her torso was first released in Pirates of Barracuda Bay, and it’s great to see it make a return.

Interestingly, we see the return of the hairpiece from Toy Story’s Jessie, but this time with a blonde braid that’s fused to the wide, red cowboy hat.

Here’s a look at the Outlaw’s alternate face, sans eye mask. Unfortunately, as you can see here, the printing on the hair is rather poor quality, where the hat meets the hair.

This Western duo is a fun little bonus for LEGO Western fans who admittedly, have been quite neglected by LEGO. Hope we’ll get more Western sets or references soon, as it’s an era that I sorely miss!

Pirate Captain

From Western, we head to one of LEGO’s staple Classic themes – Pirates! I was beyond happy to see the return of Captain Red Beard, the fearsome Pirate Captain that famously captained the Black Seas Barracuda.

He makes a return in Build a Minifigure-form, with a new face, which has an awesome leather eye-patch, and some gold teeth.

The torso is recycled from Captain Red Beard’s last appearance in Pirates of Barracuda Bay, and he also comes with a lovely blue and yellow parrot.

Captain Red Beard has come a very long way since his debut in 1989, but as you can see, LEGO Minifigure printing technology has also progressed, giving him a much more detailed torso.

And here’s the new Captain Red Beard, next to my other Pirate Captains, as a point of comparison. All in all, very good to see Captain Red Beard being super accessible, ensuring that every fan of LEGO Pirates can easily get your hands on him.

The First Mate

Every Captain needs a First Mate aboard his vessel, and the companion Pirates minifigure is The First Mate, a young, ambitious female Pirate.

She has a non-descript brown top, which seems to have a brown sash on her right. Her official accessory is just a pearl hold telescope – a relatively common element, so I’d recommend picking a more exciting accessory if you have the chance.

Update: her torso is actually repurposed from Greef Karga!

Most excitingly, the First Mate comes with a brand new Tricorn Hat, which has a red hairpiece fused to it.

It’s a really cool piece, and was first seen in LEGO Minifigures Series 20, as well as the DJ Captain from Bandmates Series 2, but it’s the first in this specific colour scheme.

And here’s the Pirate Duo!

2022 is LEGO’s 90th Anniversary, and as a celebration of classic themes, and characters, I really love how LEGO have integrated the likes of LEGO Castle, Pirates, and even Western into the Q2 Build a Minifigure selection.

This is another really solid lineup of characters, which I imagine will be quite popular, especially The Knight!

The new Q2 BAM selection will be available at most LEGO Brand Retail Stores, so pop in and check your Build a Minifigure station to see if any of the new parts and characters are in yet!
