Review: LEGO 76207 Attack On New Asgard (Thor: Love and Thunder)

The new Thor: Love and Thunder premiered in cinemas today in Australia, and I was lucky enough to go catch it on opening day, which brought my mind back to 76207 Attack On New Asgard, a small but mighty set with nearly everything you’d want from a set based on the film.

I usually expect LEGO Marvel Super Heroes sets to be very selective with minifigures, making fans shell out for multiple sets to collect the main characters, but 76207 Attack On New Asgard breaks the mould by including three main characters in a very affordable set.

In fact if you’re in Australia, the set is currently on sale on Amazon Australia at 30% off, making it an even more compelling proposition.

If you’re catching Thor: Love and Thunder in the cinemas in the coming days, and have an urge to pick up some sets from the movie without breaking the bank, read on to see if this or the larger 76208 The Goat Boat is right for you.

Also… slight spoilers included – nothing about the plot, but now that I’ve seen the movie, I can better make sense of this set and what exactly this Shadow Monster is meant (or trying) to be.

Here’s the sticker sheet included in a set. For a set at this price point, it’s not the most offensive thing ever – and thankfully, the stickers are fairly easy to apply.

For a set under US$20, this set is all about the minifigures, and in a surprise move, LEGO decided to include all three main characters in a very affordable set.

You get Jane Foster, who takes on the mantle of Mighty Thor, antagonist Gorr the God Butcher, and Thor himself. That’s Mighty Thor, Gorr, and Thor. Not confusing at all!

The best part is that there are absolutely no compromises with the minifigures, as all three are identical to the ones included in the slightly more expensive 76208 The Goat Boat, which is almost unheard of.

Here’s a look at Jane Foster, who takes up the mantle of Mighty Thor in the movie, and the OG Thor, in his resplendent new gold and blue armour.

Both minifigures look fantastic, and I’m still impressed that LEGO sought to include both Thors in the set, as I would normally expect the more exciting minifigure (Mighty Thor) to be gated in a slightly more expensive set, but nope – two Thors in a set.

Dr. Jane Foster wields Mjolnir, and sports an all-new winged helm, with Asgardian runes on her forehead, as well as detailed torso and leg printing. I really like that she also has printing on her feet, although the lack of side leg printing is a bit of a let down.

Her winged helm also has her blonde locks fused into it, and I really like the hair texture and curls that they’ve managed to capture.

Here’s Thor with Stormbreaker, which is entirely brick-built. I’ve never been a fan of these brick-built Stormbreakers as they always look very clunky and unwieldly, and nothing like the large, imposing axe we see on-screen.

With Thor being such an integral part of the MCU, it’s surprising that LEGO haven’t bit the bullet and just produced a new Stormbreaker moulded weapon instead as it’ll get plenty of use in all the sets Thor has starred in.

That said, I really like Thor’s flashy new blue and gold suit, which has impressively sharp printing.

Comparing the pair, the graphic designers have done a great job adapting their onscreen looks – the only thing I can think of to improve the pair is for side leg printing (c’mon, it’s 2022), and maybe printed bracers for their arms.

Attack On New Asgard also comes with the primary antagonist of Love and Thunder, Gorr the God Butcher, played by Christian Bale.

The Gorr minifigure is a decent adaptation of the film version, with Gorr’s pale grey skin, and scars across his head, and mummy-like outfit. He’s equipped with a black sword known as the Necrosword, a legendary symbiote weapon that’s designed for butchering deities.

This is a really complete set of minifigures, and if you can make do without Korg and Valkyrie, this US$20 set is all you need to get your Thor: Love and Thunder minifigure fix which is nice.

Minifigures aside, you also get this weird, salad-looking creature called a Shadow Monster. In the movie, Gorr wields the power to control shadows, and uses it to summon grotesque monsters from the Shadow Realm to terrorise New Asgard.

The Shadow Monster included in the set doesn’t look very shadowy at all, with the use of dark green and brown elements making it look like some sort of plant monster. The spiky vines that act as its legs also do not help.

I do like the expressive face, and how goofy it looks, and yes, those eyes are printed.

And the stickers used for its hands, which have pincer claws.

It’s also quite posable, and its head/neck can be tilted backwards, and the arms benefit from the use of 2 ball joints for increased articulation.

It’s a really weird looking creature and unfortunately, looks nothing like the Shadow Monsters we see in the movie, which are pitch black (as they’re formed from shadows), and are akin to (smaller) Lovecraftian horrors in design.

There’s 2 reasons for that – it might be that the designer, Bjarke Lykke Madsen was given some really early concept art which did depict the monster as some salad-looking plant beast, OR that they felt that a solely black creature would not have enough contrast, and look good as a toy.

I feel like it may have been a latter, and those that will pick this up before or after watching the movie might be disappointed at how inaccurate the set is.

That said, for younger builders, having a weird-looking enemy is still a lot of fun, and it’s great to be able to have Thor and Mighty Thor team up on the Shadow Monster and Gorr.

What I liked:

• Included 3 main characters in a US$20 set
• Exact same minifigures as the pricier 76208 Goat Boat
• Mighty Thor is one of the best Marvel minifigures in a while

What I didn’t like: 

• Shadow Monster is highly inaccurate to movie version
• Gorr printing is lacklustre
• Thor and Mighty Thor could use side leg printing

FINAL THOUGHTS:

For US$20, Attack on New Asgard represents incredible value, and I’m astounded that LEGO would be so kind to include Jane Foster, Thor Odinson and Gorr in such an accessible set.

The minifigures are truly the star of the set, and there are no compromises in this category. In fact, LEGO should be commended for not compromising on the minifigures, and having the same versions as 76208 The Goat Boat – something that you hardly ever see from LEGO Super Heroes.

After watching the movie, it’s apparent that the Shadow Monster is a disappointing build, not because the design is bad, but because it looks nothing like the on-screen depiction, which is pitch black, and shadowy, imagine horror-like creatures born from Symbiote goo.

That said, as a set, there’s a lot of playability here as younger fans will get plenty of play value from the minifigures, and a goofy-looking salad monster to fight.

This is a really satisfying set, and won’t break the bank if you’re looking to add minifigures from Thor: Love and Thunder into your collection, and as it’s a general release set, it wouldn’t be too inconceivable to snag one at a slight discount.

76208 Attack On New Asgard is an easy set to recommend, especially if you’re a Marvel fan on a budget, and I can expect this set to be quite popular once more people get to watch Love and Thunder in the cinema!

Thanks for reading my review! If you can, Thor: Love and Thunder is a decent Marvel romp in the cinema – a little patchy, and the tone was quite messy, but there are some parts that are visually stunning, and some fun gags too. Not the best Thor (or Marvel) movie, but decently serviceable – I was just happy to be back in a cinema.
