LEGO Ideas partners with Dungeon and Dragons, celebrating 50 years of D&D

Someone, somewhere absolutely rolled a 20 when it came to wish fulfilment. LEGO Ideas have just officially announced that they are collaborating with Wizards of the Coast to celebrate 50 years of Dungeons and Dragons, inviting submissions and product ideas through the LEGO Ideas Platform!

Dungeons and Dragons, the immensely popular roleplaying game turns 50 in 2024, and to pave the way for an epic celebration, LEGO are looking to merge the worlds of brick building and minifigures with pen and paper, and are inviting fans of both to ignite their imagination and bring D&D to life using LEGO bricks.

The possibilities are endless, and you can build anything based on your favourite D&D storylines, monsters, character classes, locations and more.

Fans are invited to submit their ideas and creations to the LEGO Ideas website where a panel of judges consisting of members of the LEGO Ideas team and members from Wizards of the Coast, will choose entries among these submissions for a Fan Vote.  

All entries that reach the Fan Vote phase, will stand a chance of becoming an official LEGO Ideas set! A mighty reward for any fan!   

I’m not a big D&D fan but I did grow up playing Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter Nights, so I’m beyond excited to see what the LEGO and Dungeons and Dragons community comes up with.

We were given a sneak peek of this collaboration at Fan Media Days 2022, and hearing from the LEGO Ideas team, LEGO are really looking at co-creation being at the heart of launching LEGO Dungeons and Dragons.

There will be opportunities beyond just the model for co-creation of the instructions, art, campaign launch messaging/visuals and more.

That said, for LEGO Ideas, the only thing they could promise is one set from this collaboration, and anything beyond would depend on how this collaboration performs.

Honestly, this felt like it was almost inevitable after LEGO defied all expectations and teamed up with Hasbro for the LEGO Optimus Prime earlier this year, Hasbro of course is the parent company of Wizards of the Coast.

It’s fantastic to see these 2 traditional toy rivals working together on this.

At Fan Media Days, Jordan Scott, Design Manager of LEGO Ideas acknowledged that this collaboration was spurred by insight that there was a huge crossover of D&D and LEGO Fans, and it felt like such a natural fit for both brands to come together.

They specifically pointed out that D&D fans were already creating their own characters as minifigures, and using LEGO bricks to drive creativity and bring their storylines/characters to life.
