LEGO Dots theme to end in June

Some bad news for Dots and Arts and Crafts fans.. LEGO have just announced that the LEGO Dots theme will be retired, and the LEGO Dots theme will be integrated into other themes and products within LEGO’s portfolio.

The LEGO Dots theme will officially exit LEGO’s portfolio in June 2023.

The January and March launches will still go ahead, which means that LEGO Harry Potter Dots sets will still go ahead, but they’ll likely be the final LEGO Dots products ever.

In case you wanted to pick up any of the January releases up, here’s the list of LEGO Dots launches from January 2023.

Pretty sad, as I have enjoyed the LEGO Dots sets, and I’ve had some degree of fun with my daughter who loves the bracelets especially to see the theme go, but I guess it wasn’t performing as strongly as LEGO would’ve wanted, and with murmurs of a downturn and recession coming, this seems like LEGO making cuts to their portfolio and only backing really successful themes and products.

Here’s the official statement from LEGO

After careful consideration, we have decided to exit the LEGO® DOTS theme and integrate tile-based play into other themes within our portfolio.

January and March launches of LEGO DOTS novelties will go ahead but also be our last on this theme, with all current items from 2022 remaining active in the product line up until the end of the year.

LEGO DOTS was launched in March 2020 with the ambition to connect with kids through their passion for arts & crafts – looking at encouraging self-expression and to attract new builders to the LEGO brand. It was a completely new style of building which used brightly coloured tiles to ignite creativity with LEGO fans, in a fun and unique way.

Whilst seeing great appetite for this type of proposition and playing a key role in retaining kids in the LEGO brand, we also recognise the challenges of establishing LEGO DOTS as a long-term brand in the arts & crafts category.

We will refocus our attention on ensuring elements of tile-play live on across other areas of the business. We know there is still a huge appeal from the arts & craft community, and we want to ensure there are opportunities for kids who love the play proposition to still enjoy building in this way. We can also confirm this discontinuation will not affect our business direction on similar themes like LEGO Art and we look forward to more exciting launches in the future.

We want to thank all our LEGO DOTS fans who inspired us with their creativity!

What do you think of this, and will you be sad to see LEGO Dots go?

As an adult fan, I really thought a bit of the line was fun and other adults around me enjoy my bracelets, stationary accessories, etc. I even introduced a group of other adults in bracelet-making whilst on a trip to Las Vegas in the U.S. Ya know what? Every single one of them thoroughly enjoyed themselves and some have shopped for their own. (Bracelets and tiles were all provided by me on this trip.)

Dots have been a fun and simple way to integrate even more LEGO into my everyday life. I’ll miss the line!

Hmm… it’s been a strange theme. As has already been said, the “Art” theme has done much of the job of the Dots theme in finding a place for being creative in that space.

Having said that, there is definitely scope for it to be integrated into other themes. My Daughter and I have just finished building the Friends set “Emma’s Art school” that features two large mosaics made of “Dots” and in that they encourage the children to play with changing the patterns rather than keeping them fixed.

I thought that was an excellent use of the theme, rather than making bracelets or necklaces.

Yeah, it’s a shame to see it go, but hopefully it’ll live on in other sets. There’s a recent Disney Princess set which also has a Dots incorporated into it, so I’m sure we’ll get plenty more. It’s still a shame because some of the sets were really good value, on clearance.

    Will not be missed

Given your posts on GWPs and Ideas sets going up in price, as well as the release of really large, high-priced sets like Eiffel Tower… It doesn’t seem to be a coincidence Lego is ending what might be their cheapest theme.

That aside, Dots as a theme always confused me what exactly its purpose was. There’s only so much you can do with bracelets, pencil holders and photo frames. Lego never really capitalised on it. The Art theme has done a better job finding its purpose.

Well, it’s meant for children, and LEGO was trying to break into the Arts and Crafts market, but ultimately, the price was probably far too prohibitive for parents, hence why they were only available when on clearance.

    This is good news!

Geez, guess I’d better go pick up a few packs of sparkly Extra DOTS then. Can’t say I was ever a fan of how quickly they rotated the Extra DOTS series.

Probably too expensive to compete with stuff such as the dirt cheap Hama/ Perler beads…

Oh, well, the parts I managed to snag might always be useful to add decorative highlights, such as street art scenery or shop signage, and it appears that most of the new molds would be around for a while, anyway.

I guess thats nothing to worry about, probably now we gonna see Classic Dots, Creator Dots, Ninjago Dots, City Dots, DC/Marvel Dots and beyond! It’s actually pretty cool to think about…
