LEGO Shrek set crosses 10,000 votes and could become a future LEGO Ideas set!

As the old saying goes, “Shrek is love, Shrek is life.” Hot on the heels of the box office smash hit Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, a LEGO Ideas project – Shrek’s Swamp – 20th Anniversary has blitzed its way to 10,000 votes, helping it qualify for LEGO Ideas next review round.

Designed by Youtuber AshnFlash, it only took a little over three days for the LEGO Ideas submission to hit the 10,000 vote mark that it makes it into the next review round, which if successful, will give fans their very own LEGO Shrek set.

Looking at the project submission, it’s no secret why this has been an overnight success – AshnFlash has put a LOT of effort and work into the overall design and concept, with clever recolours of existing LEGO elements, as well as plenty of Shrek’s main characters adapted into minifigures.

Going on step further, he’s also produced more minifigure concepts based on characters in the wider Shrek universe, including recent Puss in Boots: The Last Wish characters to capitalise on the movie’s current box office run.

I spoke to Ash briefly congratulate him on the success of the project, and he had this to say about hitting the magical 10k vote threshold.

It’s still very surreal to me. I can’t believe that after nearly two years of working on this project on and off, that I finally finished it and that it was out there for people to support.

But for it to be at 10k now as well is just unbelievable. I’m so incredibly grateful and honoured that this is the first Shrek project to finally reach 10k supporters on IDEAS, after a ton of incredible submissions in the past.

Out of all the licensed LEGO Ideas projects, I honestly think this one has legs, and the LEGO Ideas team would be seriously looking at this as a viable project, hot on the heels of Puss in Boost: The Last Wish which has just crossed US$300m at the global box office, and with an upcoming Shrek 5 movie in the works too.

LEGO also conveniently has an existing relationship and history with Dreamworks and Illumination products through the Trolls and Minions themes which were based on the movies.

That said, this unironically could be the project’s major obstacle at getting approved… because LEGO might already have something in the works for Shrek 5, keeping in mind that new themes take 2-3 years to gestate and develop, and when LEGO works with key license partners on entire portfolio decisions, they do so with a far longer roadmap.

Not to take away from this, Shrek is a really cool property and one license I’d love to see in LEGO form, and a Shrek-themed set would be an incredible way to celebrate Shrek’s 20th anniversary in 2024.
