LEGO Nightmare Before Christmas and Red London Telephone Box are coming to LEGO Ideas!

LEGO Ideas has announced the results of the Second 2022 Review Round and The Nightmare Before Christmas and  Red London Telephone Box have been selected as the winners, and will now enter production!

There were 51 LEGO fan designs in the 2022 Review Round, so it’s nice to see more than one set make it through the review process.

I am slightly gutted that Bluey didn’t make it!

Nightmare Before Christmas was one of the sets that was on my predictions/wishlist, so I’m stoked that we’re finally getting a minifigure-scale Jack Skellington set, which we should hopefully see just in time for Christmas 2024.

Red London Telephone Box was a bit of a surprise, but a welcome on. Anglophiles will be delighted to have the iconic and once-ubiquitous Red Telephone Box as a brick-built display model, and I think it’ll go quite nicely with the now-retired 10258 Creator Expert London Bus

That said, there is a mini London Bus available now if you missed out on the Creator Expert version.

Here’s a better look at some of the fan-designs of The Nightmare Before Christmas by Tvrulesmylife and  Red London Telephone Box by Bricked1980. Do note that these are fan designs, and the LEGO Ideas team will now adapt these before they unveil the final LEGO models.

And that’s it! Congratulations again to the fan designers for getting their LEGO Ideas projects selected! It seems like quite a safe pick from the LEGO Ideas team. Nightmare Before Christmas seems like the perfect LEGO Ideas pick – a nostalgic IP, with cult-favourite characters, that’s Disney-themed and has a seasonal hook, assuring that it’s a commercial success.

The Red London Telephone is a bit out of left field, but I think should make for a great desk ornament/paperweight-type model. It’s an iconic part of London’s identity, and I’m looking forward to some really sophisticated and classy building techniques in the final model, which should hopefully not break the bank.

Up next, we have the results of the Third 2022 LEGO review period to look forward to, with results expected in Summer 2023 (Northern Hemisphere). Check them all out here.

What do you think of Nightmare Before Christmas and the Red Telephone Box? Will any of these appeal to you?

My momma is a Lego fanatic. It shocks me how often she can buy the adult sets and finish them without much hassle. It’s her “zen” to life. She did the nintendo for my brother, Yoda for my neice, groot for me (easy one but I REALLY wanted it. Those are just a few amoung her typewriter, the vw van, Ghostbusters car, and the haunted house! Nasa would be proud of her shuttles and stations and I’m thinking the Atari is probably up next on her list. I love nightmare before Christmas, so this news is especially exciting for me. Mom’s already done the bus, but I’m sure she would love this idea of a London phone booth. Thanks for keeping us informed!!!! Always a joy!

  9. Joe says:

That nightmare before Christmas moc is even incredible. Can’t wait to see it with as a finished product, absolutely beautiful.

  10. Håkan says:

Who needs a red telephone box nowadays?

    • Håkan says:

Oh, no. That was meant as a sly reference to the Tardis of Dr. Who, but now I realize that the actual Tardis are dark blue in color… I bow my head in shame…

  11. Reader says:

I was hoping Clockwork Solar System and Terraria would win. Oh well. The Telephone Box seems like it would have a limited audience. Perhaps it’s going to be one of their cheaper Ideas sets that Lego has been focusing on recently?

  12. Keven says:

Noob here. Is there a general time frame between approval and production?

    • Andrew says:

Hi Keven, welcome. The lead time on Ideas depends on the complexity of the set, the amount of re-design and LEGO’s release schedule. Can be anything from 6-18 months. As a guide, the A-frame Cabin just released was in the September 2021 review and approved in February 2022. I’d imagine the Nightmare Before Christmas would have a seasonal release, but it’s probably pushing it to get it this year.

  13. Sharon Donohoe says:

Meh, I’ve zero interest in the phone box whatsoever. The only ‘imperial’ sets I could tolerate are Star Wars ones LOL. I was interested in the Nightmare set, but it looks a bit ‘sprawly’ and will probably take up a lot of space to display. As always, space is at a premium with this hobby. On the other hand, the telephone booth will not take up space to display, so could be a good option, if at a reasonable price, for other people. I can see people in countries with a link to Britain or Northern Ireland having some interest in acquiring it.

  14. So sad Bluey wasn’t approved! 😢

  15. Lorraine O'Mahoney says:

So tempted by the telephone box, especially as it reminds me of the one behind the Dulwich Picture Gallery.

That building and the mausoleum of its architect, Sir John Soane, in Old St Pancras Churchyard, inspired the phone box designer, Sir Giles Gilbert Scott.

    • Jay Ong says:

Oh thanks for sharing that bit of history – I hope the final design looks great. There are tons of talented British LEGO designers, so I’m confident they’ll be able to work their magic on it.

  16. Adele says:

I want them both. Been a while since Ive wanted an Ideas set.

  17. Andrew says:

    No Bluey? Gutted.

  18. Andrew Gardiner says:

I really did not expect the phone box to make it. I voted for it so I am pleased it did.

  19. Brian says:

Have been hoping the phone booth would make it!

  20. Chris says:

Lego built objects are always an easy pass for me such as the typewriter, game consoles etc. I am from London and I’m pleased the Red London telephone box (and hopefully post box ) have been chosen. I’ll just point out that the telephone box is not just a London thing it is/was all other the UK and I remember needing to phone home from these in villages in the countryside and remote highland roads, before mobile phones existed.

  21. Kevin says:

The more mature amongst us will well remember the red PMG (Post Master General) phone boxes with A and B buttons. Not as iconic as the British ones though.

I like the Jake Skellington set – very quirky.
