Go off-road with LEGO 10317 Land Rover Classic Defender 90!

LEGO has unveiled the first 2023 LEGO Icons vehicle – 10317 Land Rover Classic Defender 90, bringing to life an off-road icon as Land Rover celebrates its 75th anniversary.

Weighing in at 2,336 pieces, this rugged sand green Land Rover Defender will be released on 1 April 2023, and retail for US$239.99 / AU$369.99 / £209.99 and will be available exclusively from LEGO.com or your local LEGO store.

10317 Land Rover Classic Defender 90 features all the hallmarks of Land Rover’s iconic Defender, with LEGO Design Master Kurt Kristiansen bringing the boxy 1983-2016 design to life as well as put on a SNOT (studs not on top) masterclass.

See below for product pages and regional pricing:

This is LEGO’s second take on the Land Rover Defender, and succeeds the Technic 42110 Land Rover Defender which was retired at the end of 2022.

The 2023 LEGO Land Rover Classic Defender 90’s dimensions are 32cm (12.5″) long, 16cm (6″) high, and 16cm (6″) wide, without the accessories.

This LEGO System version features a very attractive sand-green colour scheme that works remarkably well, and as a special bonus includes 2 different build options – a clean road version, and one kitted out with everything that you need to take it offroad and off the beaten path.

A plethora of accessories are included for offroading, with a spare tire, roof rack with lights, engine snorkel, and offroad bumpers, winch, brick-built side rails, jerrycans, a toolbox and a jack, a shovel, pickaxe, hammer and axe, a fire extinguisher, and traction plates for crossing mud and sand.

Oh and there are also 3 different hood options.

And 2 different engine options as well – one petrol V8 or a Diesel version.

Kurt Kristiansen, LEGO Design Master commented: “Bringing the iconic Classic Land Rover Defender to brick life was no easy challenge. This prestigious car can take you anywhere, so during the design process we wanted to infuse the LEGO set with that sense of adventure. The two-in-one format means you can load up with all the necessary kit, whether you want to race through the Scottish like our adventurers Raha Moharrak and Aldo Kane, navigate water or even sandy dunes. We can’t wait to see fans reactions.”

It only takes a split second to look at a LEGO set and go wow, the design team have done a beautiful job with this, and I think this is one of those cases.

Setting aside the Defender stickers being used in the front (disappointing), near-studless smooth design is just mesmerising to look at, and I think LEGO have captured the Classic Defender’s proportions, angles and general bulkiness incredibly well here.

I love the fact that you can transform and switch it up for an offroad version, and that new element used for the wheel arch really stands out.

Here are more lifestyle and styled photos supplied by LEGO for your viewing pleasure.

I think it’s safe to say that LEGO are on to a winner here with 10317 Land Rover Classic Defender 90. The design just oozes class, and in particular, the colours work really well together too.

Personally, I like the Land Rover in the cleaner “street mode”, but the fact that you can switch its look up is a nice little bonus for fans to choose how to display it.

What can I say, I think fans will be bursting with excitement for this beautiful boxy British icon.

10317 Land Rover Classic Defender 90 will be released on 1 April 2023 on LEGO.com and your local LEGO Stores.

What do you think of the LEGO Land Rover Classic Defender? Do you think it’ll fit in well with the other LEGO Icons cars?

Amazing model a d I’d love to make it.

  3. Paula says:

Is this the same scale as the Technics Land Rover released a couple of years ago? I’m thinking of it as a gift and wondering if the two will look good displayed together … Thanks!

  4. Matt says:

The designer has captured the key elements of the Defender beautifully, and aspects such as the choice of diesel or petrol engines are a neat inclusion.
A bit surprised at the colour – the same as the recently retired Technic (new) Defender. Given the choice I would have preferred a series 1 or 2 instead of a Defender, and in classic dark green, but nevertheless I’m already smitten and will be adding this to my collection. Might have a crack at stretching it to a 110… 😉

So excited for this set, been waiting anxiously since the rumours started that Lego was releasing a classic Defender. I’m pleased they chose to go for the 90 and the two build options is fantastic (personally going to build the on-road version initially). Colour choice is spot on – gives it the Heritage edition look (perhaps they could have matched the font grill in same body colour but likely an easy modification). And looks like they have stayed true to the original with the right hand drive! Thanks for posting a great review and early details of this set.
