Australian LEGO Release Dates – First Half of 2016 sets (January – May)
Great news! The digital version of the new Australian LEGO catalogue featuring the local retail release dates for all the new 2016 LEGO sets which include new City, DC Super Heroes, Marvel Super Heroes, Mixels and Star Wars among others.
You can currently view the new LEGO Brand catalogue online here and it will also be available to view via the LEGO 3D Catalogue app on your smart device once it gets updated accordingly. iOS Android

Most of the new sets featured in the catalogue are currently available for purchase on LEGO.com but LEGO Australia does have a silly practice of staggering the release dates for upcoming sets, unlike other territories which receive most of the new sets immediately.
This guide should help you make some key purchasing decisions and plan out your purchases for the next few months. There’s always the temptation to buy and enjoy the sets early from LEGO.com at full price rather than wait for them to get to retail where they will inevitably be discounted. As a blogger that enjoys reviewing new LEGO sets, it’s a big issue for me having to wait a few months for the sets to arrive at retail. Oh well.
The Australian catalogue does have some strange omissions, lacking about 30 – 40 pages compared to catalogues from other countries (eg. Germany). The new wave of Speed Champions sets featuring Audi, Ford and Chevrolet is also suspiciously missing. I’m seeking a comment from LEGO to clarify the availability of the new Speed Champions wave in Australia. I really hope we don’t get sidelined like we did last year with Ultra Agents.
Here’s the new 2016 Speed Champions sets from the European catalogue. The new range features Ford, Chevrolet and Audi. The North American release date is 1 March 2016.
UPDATE: So, LEGO Australia has gotten back to me and they weren’t able to confirm the 2016 Speed Champion sets availability, nor where they able to give an indication whether it would be released locally in the second half of the year. Some of my sources say that the sets will definitely make it to retail in the second half of the year, but nothing is set in stone at this point. Will they be available on LEGO.com? My educated guess is yet – they’ll become available online (as our store is tied with European stores) so you can order them if you’d like them early. Hugely disappointing, as the new sets feature Ford, which has a distinguished legacy in Australian motorsport and automotive history.
UPDATE 2: So it’s not official confirmation BUT… I’m confident that the 2016 Speed Champions sets will be released in Australia in June 2016.
Creator sets like Park Animals also seem to be missing from the catalogue even though they’re available for purchase online. Very strange indeed. (Update: A reader pointed out that Park Animals could be a Target Australia exclusive like Rainforest Animals was previously)
I’ve also noticed that plenty of older 2015 sets from various themes do not feature in the Australian catalogue whereas catalogues from other countries still feature sets from the second half of 2015.
Anyway, here’s the release schedule for all the sets and themes that are coming our way in the next few months! To make it easier, you can click on each theme here and it will send you straight to their respective sections along with details on set pricing and LEGO.com links if you’re keen on purchasing them straight away.

And that’s it for all the new sets and their Australian retail release dates! This should help you plan your purchases throughout the first half of 2016 and budget accordingly. Personally, I think City is a bit drab this year, other than the cool Prison Island set. I’m most excited about new LEGO Friends, Elves and Ninjago. The Ninjago Sky Pirates theme is too cool to pass up, and I’m pretty glad that we’re getting them early too!
There seems to be a lot less Marvel and DC Super Heroes sets this year, which is quite odd seeing as how the theme usually sells quite well. Plenty of Star Wars, which should be expected. Australian LEGO Star Wars fans should have plenty to celebrate since we’re getting them in January, so it’s only a matter of weeks before we start seeing the rest of the new sets on the shelves.
I’m still umming and ahhing over NEXO Knights. I might try a few sets out to review but so far, they haven’t quite grabbed my attention yet. Seems like a more boring Chima (I am one of the 3 people who likes Chima).
So what do you think of the early 2016 lineup of sets? Let me know in the comments section!
