Harry Potter fans rejoice as 2018 marks the returning to the wizarding world of LEGO Harry Potter after a 7 year hiatus with LEGO 75954 Hogwarts Great Hall being unveiled early this morning!
The set blends iconic moments and characters from the Philosopher’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets movies and comes with a whopping 10 minifigures which includes the likes of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger, Draco Malfoy, Susan Bones, Professor McGonagall, Professor Quirrell with dual Lord Voldemort face, Hagrid, Albus Dumbledore and Nearly Headless Nick, plus buildable Basilisk and Fawkes creatures, and Hedwig and Scabbers figures, all of whom are updated for 2018 with new prints, hairpieces and accessories.
Interestingly, Harry, Hermione, Ron, Malfoy and Susan Bones all now have short legs, to reference their smaller statures in the first 2 books. Susan Bones is a pretty interesting character as she wasn’t a massive character, but gives us some much-needed Hufflepuff representation.
Can you believe that Susan Bones is the FIRST ever Hufflepuff (student) minifigure? Professor Sprout doesn’t count, but yeah, it’s taken this long to get a Hufflepuff. Hufflepuff represent!
Personally, I think Hannah Abbott would’ve been a better inclusion as she had a much more prominent role in the books, and also had the distinction of the first student being sorted during the Sorting Ceremony.
Pretty much all the big hitters are included in the set, which is fantastic for us Potterheads, especially those of us who missed out the previous Harry Potter sets.
The set’s release date is 1 August 2018 and is priced at US$99.99 which is terrific price for a set with 878 pieces and 10 major character minifigures.
The Great Hall measures measures over 14” (37cm) high, 6” (17cm) wide and 11” (30cm) deep which makes it quite a sizable-sized set.
The exteriors have seen a massive upgrade, making use of contemporary build techniques and new elements. The biggest change from the previous Harry Potter sets is the switch from Sand Green towers and roofs for dark grey which are a little more film-accurate.
I love that we’re seeing the return of the Hagrid-fig, and that he comes with his pink umbrella! I also love what looks like a new lamp accessory!
I also really love the inclusion of this iconic scene, where first year Hogwarts students arrive via boats and see Hogwarts Castle for the first time.
The interiors of the set is packed with so much details. The Great Hall features classic staples such as the floating candles and 2 house reversible House Banners (switching Gryffindor to Hufflepuff immediately as Hufflepuff is the GOAT house).
You can also see a closer look at Scabbers, Ron’s pet and secret Animagus, Peter Pettigrew which is a brand new rat mould which has been a longtime coming. I’m glad we’re going to do away with the old rat piece.
There are some neat accessories such as the Mirror of Erised in the top floor of the tower, the awesome new Sorting Hat (so excited for this!) mould and of course the return of Hedwig of the Owl!
Oh and the most exciting thing about the model is the presence of Technic pin holes, which suggest that the set is designed to combine with other sets in a Modular Capacity.
Oh, god, I cannot convey how excited I am for the return of LEGO Harry Potter in 2018. I cannot wait to see more sets revealed and will undoubtedly be buying them all when they’re released.
The Harry Potter fandom is one of the biggest and most enduring fandoms of modern pop culture, and has been clamouring for a return to LEGO Harry Potter, so this announcement will undoubtedly make a lot of people very happy, especially those that missed the entire theme.
Let me know in the comments how excited you are for the return of LEGO Harry Potter and what you think of the Great Hall!
Oh and for a blast from the past, check out my one and only LEGO Harry Potter review of the Forbidden Forest set, way back from 2012!
James says
I got this set for my B-day, and it is fun to play with, and good decor
Ruth says
I am so excited for the Great Hall lego set. I am 72 years old and my grandson has been doing legos for a very long time. I am so interested in this set that I told him I will build it in October to when I visit for his 15th birthday. He has indicated he would like to do the Harry Potter Railroad at the same time I go the Great Hall Castle. Just hope I will be able to get one when they become available on August 1.
Jay says
Wow that’s terrific and such a great bonding activity with you and your grand son. Hope you both enjoy the build, not long now!
Bluestone55 says
What is the yellow toad suppose to represent?
Jay says
It’s meant to be a pun – it’s a toad on a stool = toadstool
ShinyJ says
Oh dear, how do I say this?
I’m not real fan of Harry Potter. I haven’t read the books but I’ve seen the first two movies. All good but not Star Wars…
Having said that I am very keen to see this set and branch out into LEGO I’ve not experienced before. It looks like a lovely piece and at a really great price (especially considering the number of minifigures.).
Damn you LEGO! I have enough stuff to collect already!
N. A. McCormick says
Truly want to get this for my grandson … have tried to buy older used sets from private parties and they want a huge amount for them. Sure hope I can get that new set!
Webmus says
Cool set. Did you see the 3 other sets revealed today? 😀
Lisa says
I. Can. Not. Wait!!!!!! I’ve set myself an alert for the day they come out. I’ll be at the closest store selling them, the moment they open!
Patti Giering says
I guess I missed that. What is the date it comes out??
Zachary says
August 1st.
Jay says
Same here. I hope LEGO manufactures enough sets to meet the demand.
Maha says
Hi Jay
My kid is overly excited about the set. he has been checking the site everyday and was shocked to know that it will only be released only in August. is there any chance to get earlier?
thank you
Arvin says
My daughter can’t stop looking at these images, Jay. She can’t wait for its release . I hope she’ll be happy with this one, as I can see there are going to be heaps of other sets to look at as well!
Jay says
Awesome! I can’t wait as well. Probably the most exciting thing that LEGO will do this year!
Marli says
Any idea when and where we will be able to pre-order. I really don’t want to miss out and is scared that this might be a limited edition. Thanks!
Jay says
I don’t think this set will have a pre-order/VIP release. The upcoming massive Hogwarts set will definitely have a VIP release.
Patti Giering says
What is in the upcoming “massive” Hogwarts set?
Jay says
Nothing has been confirmed or revealed, but the Great Hall will be able to connect to it. It will also apparently be larger than the Disney Castle (piece count wise), but that’s all I know for now.
Jay says
No real idea. It’s supposedly a UCS-scale set that will be larger than the Disney Castle.
Ali says
ZOMG That just got me excited. I have no space left, but that is fine. You don’t need space to buy more Lego!
Marli says
“Massive” Hogwarts set??
Mrmarmoset says
Hufflepuff isn’t goat, its badger.
(I’m not sure if you’re joking so I just had to say that(sorry for being a crit))
Also I love the new wands
Jay says
Oh no, I didn’t mean like a literal goat! GOAT as in Greatest Of All Time, the acronym!
Mrmarmoset says
oh, sorry didn’t know that.
Billy Bob von Earth says
Man I wish they came with two of each banner because I want to have a full ravenclaw representation. Oh wait I can’t because there is no ravenclaw yet three Gryffindors. Darn you Golden trio. I hope the UCS has some Ravenclaws.
Klára says
syn bude nadseny, ted dovrsil 5 let a začína bít Harrym posedlí 🙂
Emily says
I am so excited! Do you know if they’ll do preorders – or have advice on how I can make sure to get my hands on a set?
Jay says
You can subscribe to the blog for updates and I’ll be sure to post when it becomes available 🙂
DeeAnn says
I like the new wands and the new look of Scabbers the Rat. I am not too keen about the short legs on the minifigs though. There’s not as much playability/posability with unmoving legs. I have about 3/4 of the old HP Lego sets. And I have to say, I really liked the sand green roof elements and bricks of the old sets. The new gray may be more accurate to the movies, but I thought the green was cool, and unique.
I’m not sure if I will buy all the new sets, but do know that I will have to have the big Hogwarts Castle set when it comes out!
Jay says
That’s true. I guess it’s quite easy to replace them with regular legs to get over that.
Yeah, the Sand Green did give Hogwarts a really distinctive look, and it’ll be sorely missed.
Hogwarts is going to be the most popular set this year, and I anticipate crazy demand like the UCS Millennium Falcon, if not worse.
Patti Giering says
How can we go about getting on a list to make sure to get this new Hogwarts Castle .
Jay says
Follow my blog, and subscribe for updates 😉
Zachary S. says
One word y’all, YESSSSS!!! This is So Awesome!!, I Can’t Wait. by the way it looks just like it from the 1st Harry Potter movie.
Jay says
Woohoo! Can’t wait to see the larger Hogwarts set!
Blue says
Great news about the new set and it was fun to read about the Forbidden Forest set too, I think the updated Hagrid is a huge improvement!
Jay says
Gonna miss the old Hagrid though. One of my favourite LEGO minifigs!
Jeb says
Meh… Although the set itself looks pretty cool, I’m not allowed to watch Harry Potter, not that it looks that good to me anyway. I watched a bit of one of the movies a few years ago, and it was a bit boring. Oh well, I’m saving my money to get the Temple of Airjitzu and Ninjago City anyway (this may take a while, considering I’m a 13 year old with no job :P)!
Jay says
Oh bummer. Did you get to read the books at least? Go for the Temple, before it retires!
filexcody says
I’m so exited for new Harry Potter set. It’s just I don’t like how much they switched up characters looks. I don’t like Harry’s or Ron’s new hair peace of they they changed how wands look, I think that it’s going to be easy to loose or snap the new wand peace
Jay says
You’re right, I do wish they kept Harry’s original hairpiece, which I felt was pretty iconic. Hermione’s hair looks great though!
jasper greenhill says
Wow Just wow I love Harry Potter Lego I have a bunch of the older sets including the original sets from book 1 and 2. The building style used in the sets have a huge influence on my MOCs that I build. This announcement couldn’t have come at a better time . I hope this time the theme stays around for longer than three waves.
Jay says
I guess it’s all up to demand. If it sells well, I don’t see why they wouldn’t keep the theme around!
tim says
are you sure its susan bones? i always thought it was ginny (although i guess it could be susan since ginny is younger than all of them)
Levi says
I also think she looks like Ginny. The official Lego announcement says it’s Susan.
Jay says
Yeah, that’s what’s mentioned in the press release and product description. Also, if you look closely, you’ll see she has a Hufflepuff uniform.
Joanna Jezewska says
I’m beyond excited for this set. I also missed out on the previous sets and I also think this set looks great! And at a great price too. Hopefully they will get it in SA.
Jay says
Me too! LEGO definitely knew how to announce the return to Harry Potter with a bang.
Zachary S. says
Yes, I know right?
Levi says
So Fawkes is behind the mirror. There’s a video from the New York Toy Fair.
Forgot to mention that I’m so happy about all the teachers, Hagrid and Nick!!!
Jay says
Bit bummed it’s a brickbuilt Fawkes instead of a new mould!
Levi says
Can only reapeat all of you – about the dark age and looking for HP sets in gold price. I also have none! Yet!
The castle looks beautiful, one of the most amazing built l have seen. And 10 minifigs, three pets and new molds… for 100 bucks? Do you think this set will sell out quickly?
Is that snail shell element in the tower (e.g. next to the mirror) a new mold or was used before? I haven’t seen it.
Jay says
This set will definitely be one of the best selling sets this year, especially with Star Wars fatigue becoming all too real, and so many current AFOLs missing out on the first wave of sets.
For $100, this set is an absolute steal, like you said. Add the fact that the release date is near Christmas – that’s all you need for a hit set.
Until they unveil the rumoured massive Hogwarts Castle set that this attaches to…
Well kinda. That snail piece has been out since 2015. Here’s the Bricklink entry: https://www.bricklink.com/v2/catalog/catalogitem.page?P=20310
Kay says
Super excited about the return of the Harry Potter theme!! I was also in my dark ages when HP was out and cannot justify paying the crazy money for the retired sets.
So far I have only got a few HP from ganthanks to dimensions but will certainly buy all of the sets coming out in the wizarding theme plus the cmf!
Wasn’t expecting to see photos so soon but I think the great hall looks fantastic and the price is a steal given the amount of figs included. Can’t wait to see pictures of the rest of the line up and what will be a jaw dropping UCS Hogwarts!
Jay says
I only bought the Castle and Hogwarts express, but got them used for a good price, so I know how you feel.
If you look at photos of Hogwarts, and mentally imagine the Great Hall being an attachment… that should give you a good idea of how large the Hogwarts Castle set is going to be, assuming they stick to the same scale. I’m going to preemptively start saving for it…
Uday Kataria says
My thoughts exactly. I’ve got $100 stored away for the UCS already and will be saving aggressively for it. I’m a major Super Heroes collector, but nothing is going to stop me from getting this entire Potter wave and I’ll sell my collection if I have to. HP got me into Lego back in 2010 and I’m so excited to see it return!
Jay says
The theme is going to be a winner, what with Christmas around the corner and the hype of the new movie that supposedly will feature Dumbledore v Grindelwald.
How good are the new elements and upgraded minifigures? I have to admit, I am a little disappointed that they switched up Harry’s hair. I kinda liked his large mop hairpiece. It felt pretty iconic.
Mark says
It was great to wake up this news today after all the rumours. It looks fantastic for its size and price and 10 minifigs! And yes, those technic pin holes have me very excited. I know the press release said you could “connect” the whomping willow set and the rumoured $500 USD Hogwarts Castle has me salivating. I missed the original HP sets as I was in my ‘dark age’ but it sounds like the 2018 wave might just be the start of more ‘Wizarding World’ sets to follow. I certainly think Harry Potter fandom and the richness of the Wizarding World itself is enough to sustain it as an ongoing licenced theme. Ultimately profits will dictate but I predict these will feature in the highest selling sets of 2018.
Jay says
Yeah, the rumoured D2C Hogwarts set is a no-brainer for me. I only got some of the HP sets used on the secondary market, but like you, I’m hoping for a proper resurgence of the theme. They also timed the release well, close to the movie release and most importantly, Christmas.
fish says
I like the look of the new wand pieces. Do you know where I can find a picture of the fawkes figure? Frankly, I would be much more excited if they brought back The Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit sets (or better still, The Silmarillion) but this is pretty cool to. Why don’t you put the metric measurements first, Jay? You are Australian and they are clearly the superior option.
Jack says
At the moment, no one’s seen fawkes. Apparently it’s brick built though.
Jay says
Yeah, the news wands are great! A massive improvement over using stick elements.
No idea about Fawkes, hopefully we’ll get more photos soon.
I’m hoping we get some new sets with the upcoming Amazon TV series, but I don’t have very high hopes.
Haha, I just copy pasted the measurements and got lazy this time.
Jen says
So excited about this!! Another one in the dark ages when the Harry Potter sets were around.
Jay says
I only got to buy some of the Harry Potter sets used, way after the time they retired.
Warmongurl says
So getting this set!!!!!!! I was in my Dark Ages when Harry Potter was a theme so I don’t own any sets. Love that this will get me most of the major characters and an awesome setting as well 🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂
Jay says
I only have some of the sets, so I’m really excited for these.
Colby says
My mouth is watering! In love with all these new molds!!!
Jay says
The new wands!!!
Colby says
I know, so much better than the long bars!
Jay says
Psyched with all these new elements! The Sorting Hat also looks rad.
Raspberry Milkshake says
It’s good to see somebody else agree’s on Hufflepuff’s greatness.
Jay says
Hufflepuffs just want to chill and are not tempted by greatness or flights or fancy. Greatest house of Hogwarts isn’t an understatement at all, but Hufflepuffs don’t even care about accolades like that.
Who was the Hogwarts Champion and (joint) winner of the Triwizard Tournament? A Hufflepuff.
#teambadger
Jack says
So hyped for this theme’s comeback!!! At first wasn’t sure about the kid versions, but now I love them!! The designers definitely deserve a raise with the new hairpieces and face printing. Kinda wish they had included Dobby though. First started reading HP in 2010, when I was 7. It was right at the time of the HP sets, although I only got the small “Freeing Dobby” set but it was and still is one of my favourites. Ultimately I probably won’t get any of the new sets (but I’ll probs get most of the cmfs) but am glad that Lego has revived the theme so that other kids discovering the books and films can now have lego to go with it!
Jay says
I think they’re quite endearing. Remember they’re 11 in the first movie/book, so the short legs does make sense.
I have a feeling that we’ll see Dobby and Snape in the rumoured D2C set. Funny story, I was in your position, but opted for the Forbidden Forest instead of Freeing Dobby!
DJ says
“Oh, god, I cannot convey how excited I am for the return of LEGO Harry Potter in 2018” I’d like to disagree, totally got how excited you are! Looking forward to it myself, been debating on whether to buy overpriced second hand sets, but heard a rumour about this so was holding off!
Jay says
Take what you read and multiply that by 10, and you’re close, haha.
Here’s hoping this ushers a new Golden Age of Harry Potter sets!
Piotrek says
Love this set too! And as I can see there are numerous 1×1 bricks for linking this set with other that will be released in the future. Since we have all the main characters in uniform here, this means that in lego CMF series we’ll see them with different costumes. It’s going to be an interesting 2018!
Sarah says
Looks great 6 more sets to get pictures of can’t wait.
Jay says
Yes! And those rumours about a D2C Hogwarts have me giddy with anticipation.
