Introducing LEGO 75290 Mos Eisley Cantina – a brick-built hive of scum and villainy

After an unceremonious reveal on Facebook, we finally have our first official look (and crispy HD photos) of the upcoming LEGO 75290 Mos Eisley Cantina – the definitive version of everyone’s favourite hive of scum and villainy.

The Master Builder Series Set (this isn’t classified under the UCS umbrella) weighs in at 3,187 pieces, and will be priced at US$349.99 / AU$529.99, with a global release date of 1 October 2020. LEGO VIP members will receive early access to the set on 16 September 2020.

Regional product links and pricing as below:

As a Master Builder Series set, the 2020 Mos Eisley Cantina set is designed with playability in mind. Featuring detailed interiors, and a whopping 21 minifigures included, this really is the ultimate take on the iconic cantina from A New Hope.

I hope I got the names right, and apologies if I mucked anyone up.

The lineup of minifigures is definitely the biggest draw of the set, and with 21 characters, the designers have ensured that the crowded and bustling nature of the Mos Eisley Cantina is captured perfectly, thanks to wide variety of aliens included – many of which are making their debut as LEGO minifigures.

As a Star Wars fan, the myriad of characters included just feels like a job well done from LEGO, and for many die-hard fans, this alone would justify the asking price of the set.

Here’s a full gallery with individual minifigure photos for a closer look. I really, really like Obi Wan’s new hood, which has received an update with much more detailed fabric textures to it.

Designed as a highly detailed playset, the LEGO Mos Eisley Cantina opens up to revealed detailed interiors where you can re-enact some of your favourite scenes from A New Hope as Luke Skywalker and Obi Wan attempt to secure the services of Han Solo and the Millennium Falcon.

The central bar, staffed by Wuher is the centrepiece of the display, with plenty of room for aliens to mingle.

There are plenty of rooms and booths built into the walls, to allow for all sorts of illicit activity to be undertaken by Cantina patrons.

And of course, it wouldn’t be the Mos Eisley Cantina if you couldn’t set up this iconic scene where HAN SHOOTS FIRST.

I see LEGO is trying to lie and suggest that Greedo shot first, and that Han shot him in self defence, but I trust that you know better.

I really like this cool Landspeeder included in the set as well.

And as another bonus for Star Wars fans, we finally see the return of a Dewback which has received a slight update with its printing.

The Mos Eisley Cantina is such an iconic location in Star Wars lore, and while writing this, I can’t help but have the band music playing in my head.

I think a lot of Star Wars fans will be delighted with the Master Builder Series treatment afforded to the cantina – the highly detailed playset and armada of minifigures included make for a very compelling package, in spite of the high price.

Unless you’re a hardcore Star Wars fan itching to get this set because you just HAVE to get your hands on a Ponda Baba minifigure, it’d be worth waiting on this set to go on discount, where it becomes a really worthwhile purchase.

Given the notoriety of the Mos Eisley Cantina, and how well this set is put together, I can see this being a success for LEGO and for Star Wars fans.

The 2020 Mos Eisley Cantina set releases on 16 September for VIP members, and on 1 October for everyone else and will be available on LEGO.com or your local LEGO Brand Retail/Certified Store.

Are you a Star Wars fan? Do you think they’ve done the Mos Eisley Cantina justice? Let me know what you think in the comments!

My 12 year old is spending all of his money on this one and is beyond thrilled with your review! My only issue, and curious if others are experiencing this, is that I am a VIP Lego member but cannot for the life of me sign up for early access. Not sure if the link is broken but it sends me to my VIP page only so I’m hoping this is fixed by the 16th! Thanks again!

  3. Andrew says:

Doesn’t do it for me. My shelves aren’t big enough for a lump of brown (my UCS sand crawler) and a limp of tan (UCS cantina) I have a couple of the old sets with the dew back and band figures so will take some ideas from this and piece together something smaller that complements the sand crawler and fits on the shelf! It just isn’t that much more as the old set had all the key components

  4. Andrew says:

    I’ll

  5. Rob says:

Wow! Looks amazing… Does it come with a detachable Ponda Baba arm? ?

  6. Hammerdragon says:

This is the one. I was sorely tempted to buy the last cantina 75052 a few years back but was still more focused on sets for my son. now that he seems to enjoy my choice of sets more this is an absolute must for me and I can’t wait!

    • Jay says:

Yeah, I’m glad I held off all the previous Cantina sets. This has Ewok Village vibes all over it, and will definitely be a classic.

I’d call this an ideal set for LEGO fans who are parents – so much playability in this!

      • Hammerdragon says:

Yep agree with the vibe. Gutted I don’t have the Ewok Village. I will not miss out on this.
Hope you and you’re family are staying safe and well Jay

    Love it. Buying it.

  8. Mark says:

It looks amazing! This is a Star Wars minifig collectors dream come true. So many new aliens. I’ve never seen so many unique head molds in one set. The production cost must be relatively high given the number of unique minifig pieces and the inclusion of a Dewback. For the amount of ‘stuff’ you get, displayability/playability, large number of highly desirable minifigs and iconic scene LEGO have knocked this one out of the park. It would be a day one purchase for me if I could trust LEGO Australia’ to actually supply it…my Razorcrest order has been ‘in warehouse’ since I ordered it at 12.01am on Sept. 1st :/

    • Hammerdragon says:

I hear you Mark. I ordedered the Stranger Things set on August 10 and it finally arrived in a damaged. opened package (thankfully the set box was not harmed) exactly 3 weeks later despite a tracking mail stating if was sent 1 week after order!

    • Jay says:

Also that new Obi Wan hood! Yeah, it’s nice to get a Star Wars set that feels like great value. Compare this against other Master Builder Series sets, and it’s night and day, so all the negative sentiment from customers about the price-to-value ratio is finally being acknowledge.

Bummer about Razor Crest! I thought that would happen, so I cancelled my pre-order and picked one up from my local Kmart on launch day. They should really ship these out prior to release dates like video games to ensure delivery on or close to the actual launch date.

  9. Paul Castle says:

Awesome! It’s certainly tempting, I loved the mini version of this, as well as the other “house” builds like yoda’s cottage and Ben’s hut. When do you reckon it might get discounted, do you mean in a few months when it’s discontinued and in the sales?

  10. Sharon says:

Oooooh, I’m not prepared to take the risk of waiting for some discount. We have no Lego stores in Ireland, I’ll just have to order online. I saved for a year to get the Death Star, I can take out a mortgage for this and repay till I die.

  11. John says:

Speaking of this set going on discount, just WHEN might that happen? This Christmas? Next summer? In a few years but just before it goes on discount? If there is a big run on it, will LEGO even make any more of it? I think next summer is the latest I could wait to get this set.

    • John says:

Oopsie. (I don’t know how to edit my old comment.)

      “….before it goes on discount”
      should read:
“…before it goes out of print.”

    • Jay says:

I assume that you’re from Canada? I’m not sure what the retail landscape is like, but maybe during Black Friday when there’s double or maybe triple VIP points on offer? Large sets like these tend to stick around for a long time, especially if they sell well, and I can see this one being quite successful.

  12. sabreshears says:

Wow, this is an excellent representation of Mos Eisley Cantina. I love the films, but don’t own any Star Wars Lego set, but this one is amazing.

    • Jay says:

Yeah, the minifigures really tie it all together. Excellent work from LEGO, and this makes me hopeful that we’ll get a similarly scaled Jabba’s Palace set soon.

  13. Stephen says:

Wow nearly yelped when saw the bar in the middle the play and display options on this are huge and with the mini figs covering such a range it’s an outstanding set.
Ifi it’s a gwp it’s a definite day one and likely to get as can see this being a often stock out item in the coming months even knowing it’s will be discounted when it eventually gets to mainstream shops.
    Really impressive

    • Jay says:

Yeah, hopefully we get a new alien GWP – I saw on Instagram that Sears in the US have an exclusive minifigure as a GWP from their end, so fingers crossed it gets rolled out to LEGO.com as well.
