2019 is a particularly important year for NASA as it’s the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11, which culminated in Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong walking on the moon.
As a huge space buff, I’m pretty giddy with excitement about the Lunar Lander. In addition to it being minifig-scale, the highly detailed lander looks to be packed with accurate details, such as the Descent and Ascent models.
I love that we get a ton of gold elements to mimic the Lunar Lander’s Descent stage.
There are plenty of realistic details such as the video camera that recorded Neil’s first contact with the lunar surface, laser hatches, ladder and even detailed interiors within the Ascent Stage.
I also love that they included the Lunar Plaque, a commemorative stainless steel plaque bearing the two hemispheres of Earth as well as the signatures of Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins, Buzz Aldrin, and U.S. President Richard M. Nixon which was left behind on the moon.
To aid the displayability of the Lunar Lander, the set also comes with a small slice of the lunar surface, complete with crates and the American flag as well as footprints from the Astronauts.
It’s set within a black frame, much like an Architecture set with the printed tile, making this a really easy set to display as a decorative set, on your desk or even in your workplace.
Last but not least, here’s a look at the Astronaut minifig – you get two, representing Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong.
From the photos, this set seems like a sure-fire hit, following the immense popularity of the Saturn V, which I easily consider one of the best LEGO sets ever designed. It’s almost the perfect companion to the Saturn V.
The design looks really brilliant, and I think they’ve captured the design of the Lunar Lander particularly well, as well as the bright pops of gold on the Descent stage.
The price seems decent, a little high here in Australia, but that’s mostly because of how weak the Aussie dollar is to the USD. I think for US$99.99, the price is incredibly fair for what you’re getting, although I didn’t quite like the reliance on stickers, which slightly cheapens the set.
I’m over the moon (heh) that it won’t be a long wait for the LEGO Apollo 11 Lunar Lander – it’s out pretty much on the 1st of June on LEGO.com, which is just about 24 hours after this post has been published.
If you’re planning on buying one, you might be tempted to wait for the 5th of June to order one, as you’ll then qualify for the Space Rocket LEGO Ideas Gift With Purchase. which is the first Ideas Gift With Purchase set.
That’s my thoughts on the LEGO Apollo 11 Lunar Lander! What do you think about the set and will you be picking one up? Share your thoughts in the comments section!
