More LEGO Certified Stores are coming to Melbourne, Sydney Brisbane and the Gold Coast before Christmas 2019

Exciting news for LEGO fans in Australia!

We’ll be getting potentially up to FIVE new LEGO Certified in the country BEFORE Christmas this year, according to Alceon Group, the investment company that opened the Sydney store, and the upcoming Auckland store.

They have confirmed that the second store they’ll be opening in Australia will be located the Broadway Shopping Centre in Sydney followed by Melbourne (woohoo!), Brisbane, the Gold Coast before Christmas.

This is pretty good news for the Australian retail scene which has been hit with plenty of bad news.

The flurry of store openings have undoubtedly been buoyed by the massive success of LEGO Masters Australia, which has been one of the biggest surprise hits in the Aussie media landscape this year.

For those of you who want to check out what a LEGO Certified Store experience is like, check out my review of the Bondi LEGO Store or watch the video below for a virtual tour.

Are you excited by the news? Unfortunately, Adelaide, Perth, Tassie and the Northern Territory aren’t included in the list but Alceon have signalled that they could see up to 20 stores opening if the conditions are right, so I expect most capital cities to eventually have their own LEGO Certified Store.

Update: Western Australia and South Australia will be getting theirs in 2020!

Does anyone happen to know where the Brisbane one might be?

I’m bummed that the Bondi store has never had polybags or Battle Packs in stock on any of our visits. Or any smaller, exclusive sets. We went to the Legoland Discovery Centre store in the last school hols and were amazed by all the special sets they stocked. Even things like the Friends accessory packs, Ninjago battle packs, Minecraft skin packs, City builder accessory packs… we stocked up! Made me realise how disappointed I have been in the Bondi store and their lack of smaller exclusive sets.

I would be cautious in opening too many branches and too soon. As we know so far these certified store at least the Bondi one do not participate in bonus promotional item and the items are never on sale. So basically people go to certified store only to get Store exclusive items. For regular sets people go to discounted chains like myer DJ target, etc.
By opening in major mall like westfields etc, rent would be very high and pretty soon that will catch up to their profit margins if they cannot move other regular sets.

Also, last time I checked the VIP points system at Bondi is seperate to the official Lego one. I walk past it several times a week but the only thing I have ever bought there was the mustang on opening day to get the opening day GWP.

Apart from the pick a brick wall (which I personally don’t use), there is very little to attract the serious Lego fan to shop there. It’s great to see models made up, but I imagine the bulk of sales come from pester power…

Unless they start having the regular GWPs, the only thing I could see myself buying there would be low cost exclusives to avoid paying shipping costs on the official website.

      Shame really…

Yeah, LEGO stores in general aren’t targeted at savvy LEGO fans (apart from the Pick a Brick wall), but there are some neat exclusives like Minifigure packs and others that you can’t get from the likes of Myer, or Kmart.

The Melbourne Discovery Centre and Bondi has been decent with GWPs, and of course there’s also the appeal to pick up sets on Day 1 as opposed to waiting for an online delivery.

These stores at its core primarily cater for families who don’t mind paying full-price for sets, and pester power definitely contributes to it!

I think it’s a matter of time till they get into a good rhythm with promo items – the Melbourne Legoland store has been doing well with including promos.

I think they’ve seen that the performance of the Bondi store, and popularity of LEGO Masters makes them quite confident of how these stores will perform. Add to that record low interest rates, so getting finance isn’t that big an issue for them.

You have to remember that your average LEGO buyer doesn’t really know the value of LEGO sets and religiously follow sales/deals, so they’re less sensitive to price discounts. Just take a look at the Legoland Store in Melbourne and the huge amount of LEGO shopping bags you see in Chadstone.

  7. Justin says:

WA is FINALLY getting their own Lego stores! Patience has finally paid off!

    • Jay says:

Yeah, super pumped for you guys. It’s nice that LEGO is finally acknowledging that states other than Victoria, Queensland and NSW exist.
