Review: LEGO 853990 Easter Bunny House

It seems like Easter is ages away, but that hasn’t stopped LEGO from unleashing their range of seasonal LEGO Easter sets.

For 2020, in addition to the Easter Sheep Brickheadz, and some new Build-a-Minifigure parts, we also get a new Easter minifigure “house”.

Unlike previous years (like 2018’s Easter Bunny Hut) where these sets used to be a gift with purchase.

This year, 853990 Easter Bunny House is available for purchase on its own, which I think is a much more customer-centric option than making it a gift with purchase. This set is available from LEGO.com and from your local LEGO Store.

Let’s take a closer look at the set.

The packaging of this set is quite simple – as its designed as a small gift that you can give out to young kids for Easter. Apparently giving presents is now a thing for Easter? This new decade is whack.

Unlike previous designs which had a cardboard exterior over a plastic core, this year’s design is fully cardboard (big tick for sustainability), and features a sleeve which can be removed, as well as a tag where you can address it to someone.

The build is simple, much like what you’d expect from a polybag. You get a new female Easter Bunny minifigure, some vegetation, a chicken hutch, and a scooter for egg delivery.

Here’s a look at the new 2020 female Easter Bunny minifigure. She has a cute little buck-toothed smile, with whiskers painted on her face, and a light aqua-coloured torso, with a big pink bow.

Here’s a look at her back printing. As an Easter Bunny minifigure, it isn’t a particularly novel concept, but still scores high on the cute factor that kids who are excited about Easter will undoubtedly love.

The chicken hutch has a very simple design, with steps in the front for the hen to climb into position, where she can comfortable lay her eggs.

At the back of the hutch is a little door that allows the Easter Bunny to harvest freshly laid eggs.

Which she then collects, places on the back of her blue scooter, and presumably uses them to paint as Easter eggs.

On the scooter, I also really liked that the front light is a printed fried egg.

It’s very enterprising, and establishes what the Easter Bunny does for a job.

The narrative packed into this set is a lot of fun, and I can imagine that parents can have lots of fun story-telling with their kids and teaching them about the grand Easter tradition of painting eggs with this set.

Here’s a look at the Easter Bunny minifigures over the years, plus the Bunny Suit Guy, who is the progenitor of the LEGO Bunny race.

What I liked:

• Fun Seasonal set with nice parts
• Makes for a great small gift
• Lots of story-telling potential

What I didn’t like: 

• Availability can be a bit tricky

Final thoughts: As a cheapish Seasonal LEGO set, 853990 Easter Bunny House is a winner from every angle.

It’s fun, contains an exclusive new Easter Bunny minifigure, and packs a lot of value into a small form factor.

It’s a set that seasoned AFOLs will enjoy collecting, and simultaneously makes for a great gift for younger LEGO fans to introduce them to the Easter tradition.

I also personally think it’s a great move for LEGO to sell these types of sets directly, as opposed to gating them behind a gift-with-purchase model, so LEGO fans that don’t necessarily have the biggest budgets can afford to impulse-buy the 2020 Easter Bunny House set from their local LEGO store or online.
