Bionicle wins the first round of the LEGO Ideas 90th Anniversary fan vote!

The results of the LEGO Ideas 90th Anniversary fan vote are in and there’s a huge twist!

After tabulating over 77,000 votes, the Top 3 themes from the first round are…

Update: Surprised that Bionicle won by such a huge margin? Check out my interview with BZPower to learn more about the Bionicle fan community, and why the fans deserve some respect.

With a monumental amount of support, you can see the full numbers for each theme below:

  1. Bionicle – 24799
  2. Classic Space – 18171
  3. Pirates – 15884
  4. Trains – 14855
  5. Adventurers – 13988
  6. Classic Castle -12603
  7. Forestmen – 8056
  8. Lion Knights – 7117
  9. Imperials – 7012
  10. Town – 6610
  11. Black Knights – 6427
  12. Model Team – 6397
  13. Dragon Knights – 6334
  14. Space Police – 5738
  15. Rock Raiders – 5298
  16. Studios – 5179
  17. Blacktron – 5088
  18. Ice Planet – 4503
  19. Black Falcons – 4244
  20. Aquazone – 4051
  21. M-Tron – 3555
  22. Alpha Team – 2807
  23. Paradisa – 2584
  24. Time Cruisers – 2234
  25. Wolfpack – 2111
  26. Exploriens – 1695
  27. Arctic – 1620
  28. Divers – 1424

But there’s a special surprise, as a 4th theme will be included in the Final Round:

However, we’ve seen an absolutely huge amount of support for Castle and each of the subthemes of Castle. We believe that we have made a mistake in not having all the Castle themes as just the one option to vote on in the first round. Even if you combine ‘Classic Castle’ and ‘Forestmen’ and not all of the other Castle subthemes, it pushes the number of votes up and Castle would be in the top three. This is what the results would look like if we consolidated the sub-themes of Castle:

If we add up every user that cast either 1, 2, or 3 votes for Castle, that’s 33489 users (more than double the necessary votes to make the top three).
If we add up all of the non-fantasy castle themes, excluding Classic Castle (Lion Knights, Black Falcons, Black Knights, Forestmen, and Wolfpack) there are 20821 users who cast a vote for at least one of these themes
If we add up Forestmen, Lion Knights, and Black Nights, (the three themes to succeed the Classic Yellow Castle) there are16030 users who cast a vote, again enough to take the 3rd place position from Pirates.
We realize and take full responsibility, that we made the mistake of splitting the Castle vote. So we are going to have our second vote, increase from three options to four to include Castle. As to not push out Pirates.

This will mean that the second fan vote will kick off with the following options:

Bionicle
Classic Space
Pirates
Castle

If we consolidated any other subthemes together, for example ‘Classic Space’ and ‘Space Police’ or any other subtheme, it wouldn’t change the top three, and the winners. The only exception is Castle!

We hope you understand why we’re changing the rules slightly, and that you’re excited to cast your final vote to help us decide which themed set to launch in 2022!

I think the rationale is perfectly acceptable, given that LEGO deliberately tried to split the Castle vote across different themes, and it really ups the stakes in the final round.

I’m also here to claim maximum bragging rights for correctly calling the results of the first round. I had written this and prepared it prior to the themes being released, so I somehow, by a dumb stroke of luck, got Castle as a bracket umbrella theme right as well.

I also wasn’t sure about the mechanics, but I’m still standing behind my prediction, that Bionicle will beat Classic Space in the finals.

Voting for the final round has opened and will close on February 10th at 11AM CEST 2021.

Remember, that it’s up to LEGO to determine which theme becomes the subject of the 90th Anniversary set, and are really using this to gauge the popularity of these themes.

Let me know in the comments which of the 4 you’ll be voting for, and if you’re surprised with the results and positions of any themes! Personally, I’m surprised to see such strong support for Adventurers and Forestmen!

Also, deeply disappointed that my #VOTEICEPLANET campaign didn’t work, but hey, it was a ton of fun campaigning, and putting together a Retro Review of the Deep Freeze Defender

I hope Bionicle will win the second round because it has been absent for too long.

    • Håkan says:

PromoBricks has actually leaked that the winning set will be a “Lion King Castle” or similar, based on the Lion Knights / Crusaders faction released between 1984 and 1992…

      • Jay says:

I’m of no doubt of Promobricks’ sources and track record with leaks, but I don’t think it’s the complete picture.

        • Håkan says:

Could you elaborate on that? Would you believe there’d be more sets?

          • Jay says:

I’m still adamant that Classic Space will win! Might be denial, but my prediction is that all 4 shortlisted themes (Pirates, Bionicle, Castle, Classic Space) will have their own sets, maybe not all as retail sets, but maybe in the form of a GWP, or even merch.

My money is still on Classic Space winning the 90th Anniversary outright!

            • Håkan says:

Ah. I can see some other shoutouts to Classic Space and Pirates, except for the rumored anniversary CMF series.

Bionicle is harder, though. Lego’s later CCBS themes all seem to have sold pretty poorly, and all molds are likely scrapped by now. I don’t think Lego’d be willing to gamble on a completely new CCBS system, unless they count on a big market, and the question is if fans would accept an interpretation of Bionicle in System bricks and Technic beams, considering how vocal and nostalgic many of them are.

              • Jay says:

I’m still putting faith in LEGO’s ability to keep things under wraps and secret!

Maybe a 90th anniversary mask would be a great solution, or a set in an actual Bionicle canister would be such a great nostalgic throwback.

                • Håkan says:

I was tipped off about this on Stonewars.de. This BTTF DeLorean teaser video includes both what appears to be the new Lion King’s Castle, as well as a white Classic Space Android…

  2. biggest bionicle fan says:

    you son of a *****

  3. biggest bionicle fan says:

bionicle when it stopped it stopped 2 days before my 6th b day but i hope it comes back!!!!!!
    !!!!

  4. Giorgio says:

All the Castle themes, together, got more votes than the first 2 places of this list.

    Almost double the first spot.

    • Jay says:

It’ll be interesting! I do think having to choose between Castle, Pirates and Classic Space might split the vote further, whereas Bionicle fans are pretty single-minded.

      • Håkan says:

All the Space themes together got 38.750 votes. (42.801 if the Conceived-as-Space Aquazone is included.) I don’t know the exact numbers for Spyrius, more than it’s less than 1424, but I guess the total number would be over 39.000.

Then, the numbers might still not add up, since many voters, particuarly fans of Castle and Space, would have been likely to vote for many similar themes.

  5. Sean says:

Ice planet sets were released right as I was entering my dark ages, and I never really paid them any attention. After reading your retro review, I’m actually jealous I missed out – they represent a refinement of everything that was fun about the classic space sets I grew up on – secondary features like magnets and detachable stuff, so the garage door and hidden rocket in the ice planet ship would have definitely put it on my Christmas list a few years earlier!

I voted for castle, but would be thrilled with classic space too.

    • Jay says:

Haha yes, that’s why I love Ice Planet! They combined the best of Classic Space, with fun play features, plus cool baseplates and they definitely benefited from all the new parts that weren’t available in the 70s.

I’m edging towards a vote for Classic Space, but Castle is a real strong contender as well..

  6. Ian thompson says:

Really, bionicle? That’s….surprising….and unfortunate, worst line on that list by a large margin.

  7. Mark P says:

Oh no, Model Team didn’t even crack top 10!!! I might need to make a t-shirt: “You’re not a true AFOL unless you voted for Model Team” 😆

    • Håkan says:

Model Team’s been considered as just a precursor to Creator Expert, though. Would a DLC Model Team set look much different from a Creator Expert set.

Similarly, you might wonder if a DLC Town set would look much different from a City or Modular set, or a DLC Paradisa set looking much different from a Friends set…

    • Jay says:

That surprised me! I guess Model Team was very niche since it was priced quite highly and targeted at “older” LEGO fans when it was out.

  8. Håkan says:

The thing about Bionicle is that Lego tried a reboot relatively recently,

Judging from the StoneWars Article, Spyrius and Extreme Team took the 29th and 30th spot, respectively. Can’t say I find the results that surprising, Spyrius was a pretty decent team, but it might have been too small with too few stand-out sets. Extreme Team had some good ideas, but overall it kinda felt juniorized and gimmicky with a lot of small and uninteresting sets, with garishly mixmatched color schemes.

Apparently, another article on the same German site indicated that many fans had misunderstood whether “Classic Castle” would refer to the “Yellow Castle” 1978-1984 period or any of the more general Castle themes released between 1984 and 1998, which might be another reason for Lego picking a general “Castle” option.

    • Håkan says:

What I meant to say about Bionicle is that both the last reboot (2015-2016) and Star Wars Buildable Figures (2015-2018) seem to have failed living up to expectations, and that since 2018 there hasn’t been a single CCBS-based set released. There were some rumors that a new CCBS-based system was in the works, but currently, it’s unclear if there are still any CCBS molds left, and highly unlikely any new molds would be created for a single limited release set.

    • Jay says:

Yeah, although from what I’ve gathered, the recent reboot wasn’t great. And LEGO was much more a niche hobby then, whereas now, it’s way more mainstream.

The Castle terminology was definitely confusing, so I like LEGO’s broad Castle approach for the final round.

  9. Alaster says:

How did Bionicle get this far? It’s barely even Lego… It’s release brought about LEGOs worst era as it’s rebuild ability was rubbish.

I’ll buy anything that gets released as the anniversary pack, unless it’s Bionicle.

    • Sean says:

Agreed. I also think lego might have miscalculated the demographics of people voting vs. people buying. The current nostalgia wave of people buying things like barracuda bay and blacksmith shop is gonna have a lot more Gen X/Y Latchkey kids that grew up on classic space/pirates/castle than twenty somethings who grew up with bionicle.

    • Deon says:

I totally agree. I could never get into bionicle as an AFOL and I never encouraged my kids to either. I think they got one lego bionicle character each, as a birthday present once when they were very young, but once they had built it, they went back to playing with their other lego instead.

    • It is not the worst era of lego. I happen to really like bionicle and have a bunch of older sets. But as much as I like it, I don’t want it to win

    • Jay says:

There are many, many, many Bionicle fans, and they’re all extremely internet savvy, and active on social media.

  10. Daniel says:

I’m very glad they chose to include Castle, as it has more sub-themes than Bionicle or Pirates (possibly Space too).
Castle is the only one I’d buy, but I understand why Bionicle fans are clamouring for a set as they get no love these days. Classic Space had a bit of action with the LEGO Movies. Pirates was my favourite theme as a child but I’ve turned on it now. There’s only do many times you can do another big boat and a few island sets, I can understand why the theme was retired. I’d rather a reboot of the Viking theme.

    • Jay says:

Yes, it was really fair of LEGO, and admittedly, realised they made a mistake splitting up the vote.

I think with Pirates, a great follow-up to Barracuda Bay would be an Imperial Fortress, or a proper massive Ship in the same scale as the Imperial Flagship.

  11. Ben says:

What would a d2c Bionicle set even look like? I’m voting space, but would be happy with pirates or castle.

    • Jay says:

I’d like to imagine a massive Volcano Island/Mata Nui as a setting, and a selection of Toa Mata.

      • Håkan says:

This time a set based on System bricks and Technic beams? There were a few “Bionicle playsets” released in roughly minifig scale with solid “statue” figs, but it seems the fans don’t think of those that fondly.

  12. James says:

I voted for Castle as I never had an opportunity to buy or build a Castle LEGO set. So vote for Castle as I will brook no opposition!!!

  13. I think castle and space are more deserving than pirates and bionicle. Bionicle and pirates got a small revive in 2015 and pirates just got barrucuda bay.

  14. I had my torches and pitchforks ready to riot, but it looks like castle is still in the game.

  15. Hans Fangel says:

I will vote for classic space. The 497 set was my absoulute favourite toy growing up so seeing that theme again would make me really happy.

    • Jay says:

I too, will vote for Classic Space! If Vintage/Classic LEGO fans want a shot at stopping Bionicle from winning, they need to collectively put down their arms, and choose either Castle or Classic Space, if not the vote will just be split again.
