LEGO Queer Eye – The Fab 5 Loft (10291) revealed!

Well this is a little early, but LEGO’s website has given us an early official look at the new LEGO Queer Eye – The Fab 5 Loft set, coming on 1 October 2021, and will be available from LEGO.com, or your local LEGO store.

UPDATE: Read my review of the LEGO Queer Eye The Fab 5 Loft to see more of the set!

The 974-piece set is based on the immensely popular and wholesome Netflix series Queer Eye (a reboot of the original Queer Eye for the Straight Guy), which is now in its 5th season, with Season 6 coming soon.

The set will be priced at US$99.99, and features the Fab 5, set in their loft from Season 1 and 2 – Antoni Porowski, food and wine expert; Tan France, fashion expert; Karamo Brown, culture expert; Bobby Berk, design expert; and Jonathan Van Ness, grooming expert

First thing’s first, in keeping with the theme, LEGO have given the depressing 18+/ LEGO for Adults bleak black box a makeover, and the packaging features the a lovely bright white theme, and has plenty of photos and details of the cast.

Here’s a closer look at the Fab 5 (L-R): Tan France, Jonathan Van Ness, Bobby Berk, Karamo Brown and Antoni Porowski who headline the series.

Fashion is the name of the game here, and we get a massive wardrobe full of new torso and leg prints, and I must say that the graphic designers did a brilliant job of capturing the Fab 5’s likenesses, and expressions.

In addition to the Fab 5, the set also features 2 versions of Kathi Dooley (from Season 4, when Jonathan Van Ness returns to his childhood town Quincy, Illinois), before and after her makeover.

LEGO have been going hard on the Television Series apartment sets this year, with the Friends Apartment, Seinfeld, and now the Queer Eye Fab 5 Loft, but this one introduces a much more contemporary architecture and interior design.

For fans of new elements, there are plenty of great new additions here, such as these new white masonry bricks, which are in plentiful numbers!

There are plenty of great new details and features in the apartment, such as a full kitchen island/stove, a fridge, coffee machine and plenty of counter space.

Most fittingly, the Interior design expert on the show, Bobby Berk also happens to be a huge LEGO fan, had a big role in bringing this set to life.

There’s also a salon section for Jonathan Van Ness to do his magic, complete with a mirror, and hairdresser chair.

For Tan France, there’s also a small apparel and clothes section, with some additional outfits, hats and hairpieces, and pants as well.

True to the show’s makeover theme, there’s a “change room chamber”, where you can swivel Kathi around to complete her transformation.

It’s interesting to see LEGO lean in heavily into pop culture, and TV series in 2021, as well as this “Apartment Format”, but more importantly, this set is a big step forward of LEGO driving Diversity and Inclusion, established with Everyone Is Awesome.

Unlike Everyone Is Awesome, this step goes further with depictions of the LGBT stars of Queer Eye – even the set name itself is unashamedly queer as well, and a watershed moment, where you have 5 queer individuals, being depicted as LEGO minifigures.

I’ll share my full thoughts in my review which will be published at 9pm AEST, but I was surprised by how much I liked this set, and that it has plenty of appeal outside of fans of the show.

That said, Queer Eye is a fantastic show, and has an amazingly uplifting message of acceptance, love and positivity. I’m a big fan of the show, and I hope that this set introduces it to more AFOLs.
