I hope you’re ready to ring in the New Year with Sonic the Hedgehog, as LEGO have just officially unveiled the highly anticipated LEGO 21331 Sonic the Hedgehog Green Hill Zone set!

Priced at US$69.99 / AU$119.99 / £59.99, the LEGO Sonic The Hedgehog set has a release date of 1 January 2022, adding another massive release to an already packed 1 January release day!

The 1,125-piece LEGO Ideas Sonic set will be available exclusively from LEGO.com, and your local LEGO Store.

Unfortunately, most LEGO fan sites were meant to publish their reviews today, but none of us have gotten the sets due to shipping delays… so you’ll have to wait for the 1st of January onwards for official reviews!

21331 Sonic the Hedgehog Green Hill Zone is the 39th LEGO Ideas set, and was greenlit by the LEGO Ideas team in February last year, and is set to be one of the most anticipated LEGO sets for fans of one of the most iconic video game characters ever.

Here’s a look at the (new for 2022) LEGO Sonic, which is the second time he’s made an appearance as a LEGO Minifigure, following the 71244 LEGO Dimensions Sonic Level Pack from 2016.

Sonic has been quite an expensive minifigure, and for fans who missed out on LEGO Dimensions, or weren’t into LEGO until recently, this makes for a great and accessible way to get your hands on Big Blue.

LEGO haven’t changed much, but he has prints on his leg for Sonic’s iconic red sneakers, as well as a slightly different eyes, and smile, as well as back printing.

I’ll definitely compare both versions when I get my copy!

The original Sonic LEGO Ideas Project was submitted by 24-year-old, UK based LEGO superfan Viv Grannell, and as you can see from the original design, LEGO have made several tweaks, namely removing Dr Eggman’s (or Robotnik) mech, the brick-built Heavy Magician and Heavy Gunner figures, to keep it squarely focused on Green Hill Zone.

LEGO have (rightfully) kept the model simple, with a 2D section of Green Hill Zone, featuring a Moto Bug and Crabmeat as enemies, as well as rings to collect, and interchangeable item box powerups, which include a 1-Up, Super Ring, Invincibility an Power Sneakers.

For those that grew up playing Sonic on the Sega Genesis, I absolutely guarantee that you will instantly hear the Green Hill Zone theme music in your head.

Many details such as the Spring, and Life Counter are lovingly re-created, and I love these printed tiles with pixelised textures on them.

As someone who grew up with Sonic The Hedgehog, and spent countless hours on the Sega Genesis… this set hits the spot for me, and I absolutely can’t wait to indugle in my childhood video game nostalgia in LEGO form!
