Review: LEGO 75324 Dark Trooper Attack

The Mandalorian TV series has reinvigorated Star Wars fans, many of whom are weary because of the lacklustre Sequel Trilogy, and in the finale of Season 2 (The Rescue), we were treated to what it perhaps one of the most epic scenes ever – Luke Skywaker showing out of absolutely nowhere to rescue Grogu.

In the legendary hallway scene – we get to see Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, fully-powered and ruthlessly eviscerates an entire platoon of Dark Troopers to rescue Grogu.

One of the most iconic Star Wars scenes absolutely deserves a LEGO Star Wars set on its own, and the Star Wars Design team have delivered with 75324 Dark Trooper Attack, allowing fans to re-create that scene in stunning accuracy for their collections.

Also known as the LEGO Dark Trooper Battle Pack, this is quite possibly one of the most anticipated LEGO Star Wars sets of 2022, and will be one of the most in-demand sets, especially for army builders.

I was lucky enough to have received a review copy, ahead of its 1 March 2022 release date, so let’s get into it!

75324 Dark Trooper Attack will be released on LEGO.com, Amazon and most toy stores on 1 March 2022.

Special thanks to the LEGO Group for providing this set for review

There’s no denying the incredible appeal of this set. With 4 minifigures (3x Dark Troopers and Luke Skywalker), this really is a glorified Dark Trooper Battle Pack/army builder.

It falls under the same class as last year’s incredibly popular 501st Legion Clone Trooper, as sort of a deluxe, and more expensive battle pack, but I doubt the price will dissuage LEGO Star Wars fans from picking multiples up.

I cannot express how happy it was to see Jedi Master Luke Skywalker, in his black Return of the Jedi robes, fully-powered up and attuned with the Force.

When his green lightsaber lit up, I felt like I was 6 watching Return of the Jedi for the very first time.

This is an absolutely sensational Luke Skywalker minifigure, with updated torso and leg print, a great fabric cape, and most excitingly, a new black cowl/hood.

Luke has both a neutral, battle-ready (imma murder some Dark Trooper) expression, as well as a slightly happier expression, as well as back printing.

That said, the main drawcards are the 3 Dark Trooper Minifigures. Dark Troopers were previously incredibly expensive on the secondary market, going for up to $50 at one point, as they were exclusive to Moff Gideon’s Imperial Light Cruiser set, so LEGO throwing THREE in a US$29.99 is simply unreal.

Let it never be said that the LEGO Star Wars design team doesn’t care about Star Wars fans.

The Dark Troopers are great, with their awesome new moulded helmets, printed armour pieces, as well as highly detailed prints of their torso and legs.

Here’s a look at the insane level of printing on their heads, and backs.

The helmets in particular, are incredibly well designed, and I’m so glad that this is an economical way to get your hands on Dark Troopers without breaking the bank. LEGO have been on a roll with Dark Troopers lately!

The build itself is small – at only 166 pieces, you do get a substantial model, a cutout of the hallway before the great Dark Trooper massacre of 2021.

Stickers are aplenty here, used for all the electronic panels and lights in the hallway, as well as the elevator, but they do a great job of mimicking the details in the iconic scene, and feel very Star Wars.

The hallway may look plain, but as this is a Deluxe Army Builder set, even if you purchase multiples of them, these elements, and stickered decorations will absolutely come in handy for the hallways of bases, and building larger dioramas or settings that have the right Star Wars look and feel.

But wait, there’s more – there are also super fun play features built in – the dial above the elevator, allows you to dramatically reveal Luke Skywalker, just like the scene – something really satisfying as a play feature!

Additionally, there are dials, and even a pull-back function, allowing you to emulate Luke Skywalker’s force powers, causing Dark Troopers to spin, and get Force-pushed.

The set being a small diorama, also makes for great fun posing the minifigures – there are so many scenes you can re-create, such as Luke Skywalker force-choking a Dark Trooper, and exploding it from the inside.

Or Luke Skywalker, making quick work of the Dark Troopers, decapitating and destroying a whole bunch of them in the corridor.

It’s a lot of fun to setup, and I expect Star Wars fans will find a lot of enjoyment with the set.

What I liked:

  • A brilliant set doing justice to a legendary scene
  • Three Dark Trooper minifigures
  • Hallway is useful for play or photography
  • Play features are a lot of fun
  • Hallway elements and stickers are usable for MOCs

What I didn’t like:

  • A bit too many stickers than I would’ve liked
  • This set will sell out instantly, and be hard to get as fans buy multiples
Final Thoughts:

LEGO have knocked 75324 Dark Trooper Attack out of the galactic park, delivering an exquisite Deluxe Battle Pack that’s just begging to be purchased in multiples.

Including 3 Dark Troopers feels awfully generous, considering these were worth quite a bit previously, and ensures that fans can get their hands on as many as they like without jumping through too many hoops.

The design of the hallway enables you to re-create so many facets of the iconic Luke Skywalker scene, and the play features don’t feel forced (heh) in any way.

Having a brand new display of Luke Skywalker at his strongest in 2021 is a dream come true, and having a LEGO set that pays homage to that legendary scene is just a dream come true.

This is one of the most satisfying LEGO Star Wars sets yet, and one of the best this year, allowing you to either army build, or have a compact display of one of the most memorable Star Wars scenes ever.

I really can’t think of any faults, except maybe how hard it will be to get your hands on this set, as I expect nearly every Star Wars fans will want to own one, if not more of these sets.

Rating and score: 4/5 ★★★★✰

Build [3] – Nothing too groundbreaking, but I enjoyed how accurately it depicted a Star Wars hallway
Real Value [5] – 3 Dark Troopers, a modern ROTJ Luke and hallways elements represent exceptional value
Innovation [3] – Nothing too innovating, but a really great example of what a deluxe battle pack could be
Coolness [5] – One of the best Star Wars scenes in LEGO form
Keepability [5] – This is an absolute keeper, and I wouldn’t begrudge people holding on to dozens of these.

Thanks Jay! I was already interested in this set, but your review (and the plain joy of it) really shines through and makes me feel like an excited kid again; thank you!

    Dark Troopers! Yay!

Great review and looking forward to this set !

But this comment -, “Let it never be said that the LEGO Star Wars design team doesn’t care about Star Wars fans,” based on a single set is wrong on way too many levels.

SW Lego is inconsistent at best. Have a look at the box art on this set, the trooper is wearing his torso back to front. The silver buckle from the back is missing on the left and you can plainly see it on the one on the right. And come on, the lack of 501st sets in Australia is not ok, while it sits in shops on sale in other countries around the world. The whole Gunship release was a fiasco and I highly doubt they released this set to stop the $50 charged for the figure. Hell Captain Rex goes for over $200 used and was last released in 2012 and we just had season 7 of the clone wars two years ago, a perfect time to release another Captain Rex.

In this case, I agree this is a great little set which resonated with SW fans around the world; Luke finally had his hall scene and the fact that Lego immortalised it is fantastic, and yes, the Storm Troopers are amazing.

I love Lego – but they are definitely inconsistent with SW sets and just as great sets need to be acknowledged, so does their inconsistency.

      *dark troopers (need coffee !!)

    • Jay says:

All good! That comment was more to the fact that we got a really competitively priced deluxe battle pack, with 3 previously very expensive minifigures AND an updated Luke. LEGO could’ve sprinkled Dark Troopers in more expensive sets, so including 3 for less than the price of what it was going for on the secondary market prior to this set was a welcome gesture.

But yeah, the mistakes you raised are valid! The printing mistake was due to the sample sets being stamped wrongly, and in upcoming print runs, they’ll be fixed. Gunship is an interesting one, and I think may have been a huge mistake, oversight by LEGO Australia not ordering more and prematurely retiring it. I do think retailers also panicked – it’s helpful to remember that it was in 2020, when it felt like the world was going to end, and I think toys weren’t high on their priority list, hence the lack of orders coming in from LEGO.

Captain Rex, I wholeheartedly agree – maybe they’re cooking something up for the upcoming Ahsoka Tano series, which is when I expect to see them reissue him again.

It’s important to give them praise where its warranted, and with this set, it’s hard to argue that we’re getting a LOT of value for a theme that has traditionally had a poor record of it.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, it’s very appreciated, and I hope someone from the Star Wars design team makes note of it.

      • Monty says:

ah, that makes sense, yes the price isn’t bad at all for a SW set !

As noted it is a great set, and the sets this year seem to be quite good. They just don’t seem to have their finger on the proverbial fan pulse like Harry Potter or even the Speed champions do, which is a great shame.

  3. James says:

An excellent and engrossing review Jay. Sublime photography too. Keep up the good work!

  4. Ian Hazlehurst says:

I do like the play value in this mini build, so if still available when funds allow I might.

  5. Excellent set, and great review Jay – the pictures certainly do it justice! Cannot wait to pick this set up when it’s on shelves. The build is a little lacklustre, but the minifigures more than make up for it. Would love for LEGO to make more awesome figure-centric sets like these, although their rarity does make this set feel “special”.

    • Jay says:

Thanks! It was a lot of fun, and I hope it won’t be too difficult of a challenge finding these on shelves!

I’ve seen some MOCs on social media where people have been mixing a few of these to create more detailed corridors or dioramas, so the sky’s the limit with this one.

Plus who doesn’t love dark troopers!
