LEGO Harry Potter AND long-suffering Train fans are in for a treat with the magnificent details of the Hogwarts Express steam engine brought to life.

Rich in details both inside and out, the model includes the steam engine sitting on a track-display-base, a turning lever to activate the driving wheels, the coal car, the passenger car featuring light up bricks, and a spectacular replica of Platform 9 ¾, which can be attached in several different places.

Here’s a look at Platform 9 3/4, which also has a sweet UCS-style plaque.

The set is packed with a whopping 20 minifigures, spanning 4 movies – the Philosopher’s Stone, Prisoner of Azkaban, Half-Blood Prince and the epilogue of Deathly Hallows Part 2.

Philosopher’s Stone: Train Conductor, The Trolley Witch, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger
Prisoner of Azkaban: Remus Lupin, Dementor, Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, Hermione Granger
Half Blood Prince: Harry Potter, Luna Lovegood, Draco Malfoy
Deathly Hallows Part 2: Harry Potter, Ginny Weasley, Albus Severus Potter, Lily Luna Potter, James Sirius Potter, Ravenclaw Student, Hufflepuff Student

The train is satisfyingly long, measuring 118cm (46.5 in.) long, 26cm (10.5 in.) high!

Here are more lifestyle photos to really showcase just how amazing of a display piece this is.

This is the second LEGO Harry Potter set bearing the Collectors’ Edition title, after last year’s excellent 76391 Hogwarts Icons Collectors’ Edition, and makes for a really impressive grouping of UCS-class (Ultimate Collectors’ Series) sets, especially if you include the Hogwarts Castle.

Here’s how they both look on display together.

While I have to admit that I got a little bit of sticker shock with the set’s price (US$499.99/AU$799.99), this is a 5000+ piece set, and a really stunning Train set if you strip away all the bits that make it Harry Potter.

It looks like a very fine rendition of the actual Hogwarts Express, which was teased at LEGO CON 2022, and I think looks fitting to take its place as the flagship LEGO Harry Potter set.

For Train fans, despite the high sticker price, this is a superb display model, that makes you do a double take to realise that it’s actually made out of LEGO. There are little to no studs on the steam engine, and the overall size and bright colours also make this an excellent display centerpiece.

I’m not sure if it’ll connect to regular LEGO track, or if you can easily motorise it, but we’ll be able to find out soon once review copies (or lucky New Zealand fans) start being built.

I’m really excited by this, and can’t wait to get my hands on this set despite the hefty price. It’s been such a long time since we’ve had a LEGO Train of this calibre, that I want to jump on this immediately to experience the magic.

What do you think of the Hogwarts Express? Will this go on your wishlist?

76405 Hogwarts Express Collectors’ Edition will be available on 31 August 2022, from LEGO.com and your local LEGO store.

Hi, does someone know how many of these sets are made?

  2. Grailer says:

It should be remote control. It is to expensive. Who needs all those figure.

  3. David says:

I love it, but I’m not buying it yet. It’s too expensive and to be honest I’m disappointed with the station and the amount of stickers.

  4. Neil says:

I think the train (and set) looks great but that price is hard to swallow.. especially with the reliance on STICKERS!!

C’mon.. an $800 adult display set and it uses stickers.. not ok in my book.. im fine with stickers in a $20 city set but not here..

Im a huge train fan but finding it hard to see myself getting/affording this one..

  5. Keith says:

Reading on reddit, apparently the track is a stud wider than normal track so won’t be able to connect so it’s really just a display set. For ppl who like train but not necessary HP fans, wonder if it’ll still be worth it to them.

  6. Benson says:

Hi, I think this train will not able to fit on an existing regular tracks. The current track is 4 studs apart, but for this one, when you zoom in at the boxart photo, you can see that the rails are on a 1 x 2 jumper plates, and the jumper plates are 4 studs apart from each other, so I can say that the wheels are 5 studs apart. Unlike the previously released Crocodile Locomotive, which is just 4 studs apart.

This is an awesome set with a lot of details, but I think the scale is a bit off compare to the minifigures. It’s like a little too big from the appearance wise, however it must be this big in order to be able to build the interior…..tough choice.

  7. Andrew says:

A truly Epic set, with sadly a truly Epic pricetag putting it sadly well and truly out of my reach.

The whole brick-built track thing is a cheap way to up the piece count, and presumably isn’t particularly satisfying to build. They did the same with the Crocodile Locomotive, which was also overpriced when you just take the train itself into consideration.

The station looks like an afterthought, and only one carriage?

    • Andrew says:

PS and reading a little more about it there’s a whole bunch of stickers as well. In an $800 display set? Sheesh.

  8. GJBricks says:

$800 AUD!?!? There is no way that is an $800 set except for the bucketload of repeated minifigures.

Looks stunning though! Wow. Damn you LEGO. The train loving man child in me wants it and the adult part of me says “don’t do anything crazy!”

    • Jay says:

You could easily offload the minifigures on their own for…. I dunno, AU$200-ish?

I figure train fans who couldn’t care less about having multiple Harrys would be pretty happy with a train this huge and complex for AU$600.

Still on the upper limits of pricing… but far better than $800

      • GJBricks says:

Was thinking the same thing! But yeah, still overpriced for what you get. Looking at it, guessing there are some custom pieces in there too.

I think I might settle for upgrading my Moc version a little more 🙂
