LEGO 21335 Motorized Lighthouse is set to illuminate your LEGO collection

LEGO have announced the brightest set in their collection thus far, the LEGO Ideas 21335 Motorized Lighthouse!

This 2,065 piece set will be priced at US$299.99 / AU$ 469.99 and has a release date of 1 September 2022, and will be available exclusively from LEGO.com or from your local LEGO Store.

Update: To see more of the Motorised Lighthouse, check out my full review of 21335 Motorized Lighthouse!

The LEGO Ideas Motorized Lighthouse is packed with details, and most importantly, has a motorised light allowing it to be a fully functional lighthouse to steer ships away from treacherous reefs and cliffs.

See below for regional product pages and pricing

The Motorized Lighthouse packs quite a bit of display presence, standing 50cm tall, sitting above a really attractive new dark blue 32 x 32 baseplate. Yup, that’s a dark blue baseplate all right.

The set is is designed authentically to mirror how a real lighthouse operates. It sits on its own island, with a staircase leading up to the lightkeeper’s cottage, plus two minifigures and their boat also add detail to the display.

The original fan design was submitted by Sandro Quattrini (aka Roses Must Build) and you can immediately tell that LEGO have improved upon the initial LEGO Ideas project, upsizing the model to minifigure-scale.

Here’s a look at the two new minifigures, as well as a new white boat with oars. I really dig the Lighthouse Keeper’s design, as well as his female companion who have very Lighthouse/nautical appropriate attire.

Here’s a look at the cosy interiors, where a stove is illuminated by a Powered Up LED Light. Included in the set to motorise the Lighthouse are battery box, motor and aforementioned LED light with the cable

The walls of the Lighthouse also can be easily removed to reveal the interiors.

Of course, the highlight of the set is the Lighthouse Lantern Room situated at the very top of the tower.

As you can see from the photos provided, the illumination of the Lantern Room seems quite intense, not something that’s easily achievable with the existing LEGO LED Light.

Looking at the photos provided, and this was a very pleasant surprise for me, I discovered that there’s a Fresnel Lens element which helps create and focus a more powerful beam of light from the included LED cable.

This is incredibly ingenious, and true to the design of classical lighthouses, and is such an incredible piece of LEGO engineering that will surely add so much to the enjoyment and accuracy of the set.

Most importantly, the set is gorgeous, and a fine companion to 21310 Old Fishing Store. It has height, and is just a great standalone display model that many adult LEGO fans will undoubtedly enjoy.

The LEGO Ideas Motorized Lighthouse is based on an idea shared by 20-year old, Canadian LEGO fan, Sandro Quattrini.

Sandro, who is currently studying animation, was inspired to design the lighthouse by a childhood trip. “My mother loves lighthouses, and she has been telling me to build one for years,” said Sandro talking about the design. “We once took a trip around the Gaspé Peninsula, a region of the province of Quebec, which is host to lighthouses of all shapes and sizes.

We visited enormous stone lighthouses on rocky beaches and small, abandoned wooden lighthouses hidden behind the trees. I guess these structures have always been in some corner of my mind since that trip many years ago and for this project I wanted to capture that towering essence of tall lighthouses, while also keeping with their solitary nature.”

Talking about the design and why it was selected, Global Marketing Vice President, Federico Begher, said, “Sandro’s design really evokes the solitary role of the lighthouse and the motorized light adds a beautiful dimension to the set.  I love the attention to detail with the lightkeeper’s cottage and the boat.  It’s a really exciting and challenging build that creates a fantastic display piece.”

Here are more lifestyle photos supplied by LEGO.

The price is going to be a contentious point for some, but with the inclusion of a Powered Up battery box, motor and LED Light, these elements would naturally contribute to the slightly higher than usual price. The Australian price is probably the worst globally, although its fairly close to the UK price.

I’ll have more to say on this set in my full review, which I’ll be sharing very very soon, so be sure to keep an eye out on the blog for it!

21335 Motorized Lighthouse will be released globally on 1 September 2022, and will be available exclusively from LEGO.com or from your local LEGO Store.

Hey Jay, have you heard any word on whether this set will eventually be put out to third party sellers? Of course, let’s be honest, what I’m really asking is – can we expect any discounted prices on this from anywhere? Or is this slated to only ever be available directly from Lego?

  2. Zack Lego maniac says:

Lego needs to realize, in the end the price markups will lose long term customers and not make up for the global inflation we’re all facing.
Cut the cost, make more sales. I’m not putting out 300 usd for a 2000 set regardless of the motorized part and light, is just not worth it and it is not something we’ll get used to over time.

    • Jay says:

That’s fair – it really appeals to a specific type of LEGO fan and collector, and if you don’t see value in this, that’s totally okay.

  3. Theo says:

Yes!! I’m so excited for this one – it’s what got me into lego in the last year or so!! Sad about the high price, but did expect something along those lines. The inside looks absolutely beautiful from what we can see of it, and i LOVE the minifigs that accompany it. Thankfully theyre including the battery box too phew (though it would be pretty rough to sell a lighthouse sans light i suppose).

  4. Andrew says:

For me this kind of set is what Lego Ideas should be about – a great idea for a Lego set that wouldn’t be part of regular releases and very well executed. This looks a winner, and a change from another “bunch of minfigures in a room” set.

$A460?? Blimey, this new pricing is going to take some getting used to. Like others who have commented I’ve cut down the number of Lego purchases and have to be much more selective, going mainly now for the smaller sets. Doesn’t hurt to dream though.

  5. Reader says:

It looks really good and I like it, but that price is again a turn-off. Depending on the type of motor and brick included, the price could be ~AU$120 cheaper if they were excluded. (Battery box AU$50, motor up to AU$50, light brick up to AU$35.) Perhaps Lego should offer an option without the motorised component; it might make the price more palatable. Otherwise it’s probably going to go on the wishlist until it gets to Amazon / stores with a big discount.

  6. Kevin says:

I agree with Monty. Cool set but sadly the high prices ( how exactly are they justified?) will cause me not to buy. I used to buy and collect a lot of sets, but my expectant excitement was soon put out by the price. Sadly many agree and Lego may soon find themselves on the rocks and in need of a lighthouse too.

  7. Danni says:

Yay, finally! I was getting so disappointed when the leaks were saying no motorised component. So happy they were wrong. Expensive set but not a surprise since it seems like prices are rising all over the place. Super excited to see if I can get one.

  8. Ian Hazlehust says:

Love this, but price is a deciding factor these days, with cost going up left, right & centre!

  9. Joe B. says:

I love it, but $300 US is going to keep me away because I want to have money other Lego, plus I’m still on the hook for several BrickLink Designer sets. But I agree about the old fishing store. I was iffy about it at the time and now I regret not getting it, but if I had, I’d get this lighthouse on day 1.

  10. Martin Haley says:

Really like this set. Love Lighthouses so this is definitely on my Wish List. What really makes it is being motorised (English) and lit, don’t think I’d buy it if not. Detail looks amazing and being a small footprint it will be easy to display.

  11. PHILIP Gatto says:

This is beautiful and would love to build it but its to expensive. I love Lego’s but i’m buying less sets because of the price. I will purchase a Steam Locomotive at any price if Lego every comes out with one.

I’m into Trains and some of the latest Lego Train releases are not that great in my opinion.

This is the first time I have ever commented on Lego

  12. Rainer Dorna says:

I make no claim to be psychic, but for the last few months, the IDEA of a Lego lighthouse has been floating around in my head. I’m thrilled that it’s a reality. And this is one AFOL who’ll be lining up outside our local LEGO store on September 1st.

  13. Fifi says:

I think the baseplate is 32×32.

  14. Monty says:

It’s stunning, no doubt about it. But Lego really need to have more of a balance of sets for reasonable prices that still have the AFOL crowd in mind.

Sadly, these priced sets are starting create a feeling of Lego fatigue rather than the normal joy I used to have when a new set came out.

    • Paul says:

Give it a month and the Chinese copies will be available. No resale value but certainly an alternative for those who just want to enjoy the models without the added LEGO tax

    • Carly says:

I totally agree about the fatigue. I quit collecting HP and drastically cut down to just buying a few sets per year because the releases and prices are so overwhelming
