Happy International LEGO Day! The LEGO Brick turns 65!

It’s the 28th of January, an incredibly significant date for The LEGO Group as it was on this day, 28 January 1958 that the first patent for the iconic LEGO brick was filed with the Danish Patent and Trademark Office in Denmark by then-owner Godtfred Kirk Christiansen.

It’s a day that has come to be known as International LEGO Day or LEGO Patent Day, and this year, we celebrate the 65th anniversary of the LEGO Patent!

To celebrate International LEGO Day, LEGO have brought back some LEGO Originals VIP Prints which you’ll be able to find in your LEGO VIP Rewards Center! I think there might be regional differences with the rewards available, but here in Australia, we had the option to redeem 1st Edition Elephant Water Colour Print, Circa 1937 – AUNZ, 1st Edition Print Australian Patent, 1977 – AUNZ and 1st Edition Print LEGO® System Brochure, 1958 – AUNZ for 650 VIP Points each.

When I visited the LEGO House, in Billund, Denmark last year, I got the opportunity to see the Danish and English patent in the flesh, which was a pretty special experience. The text has slightly faded on the Danish patent, but you can still see the date, 28 January 1958 and the time (1:58pm) that the patent was granted.

The best known images of the LEGO brick patent, was actually the version used in the submission to the US and UK Patent Offices, but these are the original Danish LEGO Patents diagrams.

Here’s the well-known patent diagram!

At the LEGO House in the History section, I also took some more photos of the exhibits and displays, which has some really cool historical artifacts from the point where LEGO patented the design of their bricks.

It was incredibly surreal, and such a brilliant experience touring the history section, and I could’ve spent hours there!

For references of other parents submitted around the world, last year, LEGO shared a selection of patents from around the world, which you can peruse below:

So yeah, hope you enjoyed this little blast from the past for International LEGO Day!
