LEGO Power Rankings – January 2023

After a one year hiatus, I thought it’d be a great time to bring back and restart my LEGO Power Rankings list!

This was a monthly series I started in 2021 that compiled my personal Top 10 LEGO sets of the year, with rankings updated monthly as new sets become available on the market.

I also include a small summary of new reviews, and major news headlines from January, as well as interesting LEGO news, MOCs and videos from across the web.

To kick off the new year, here’s a list of my Top 10 favourite sets as of January 2023 so far!

January 2023 LEGO Power Rankings

Do note that this list only includes LEGO sets that were released up to January 2023, and doesn’t include any of the new February releases.

I’m really proud that I’ve had a pretty consistent start to the year, having reviewed 7 out of the Top 10 so far!

  1. 31208 Hokusai The Great Wave [review] [Rating: 5/5  ★★★★★]
  2. 10312 Jazz Club [review] [Rating: 4/5  ★★★★✰]
  3. 71037 LEGO Minifigures Series 24 [review] [Rating: 4/5  ★★★★✰]
  4. 76917 2 Fast 2 Furious Nissan Skyline GT-R (R34) [review] [Rating: 4/5  ★★★★✰]
  5. 41732 Downtown Flower and Design Stores [review] [Rating: 4/5  ★★★★✰]
  6. 80111 Lunar New Year Parade [review] [Rating: 4/5  ★★★★✰]
  7. 60394 ATV and Otter Habitat
  8. 71785 Jay’s Titan Mech
  9. 60384 Penguin Slushy Van
  10. 41730 Autumn’s House [review] [Rating: 4/5  ★★★★✰]

The January 2023 release wave saw a large variety of new sets, and topping the charts was a set that I didn’t expect to enjoy as much as I did, a LEGO Art set – Hokusai The Great Wave.

It’s sold out globally, which tells you that it’s sold extremely well, and it just edges out the 2023 Modular Jazz Club for the top spot.

The rest of the Top 10 is peppered with some LEGO Friends sets, like 41732 Downtown Flower and Design Stores and even more affordable city options like 60394 ATV and Otter Habitat and 60384 Penguin Slushy Van

I’ll hold off on creating the list for the Top 10 LEGO sets under US$50 till about June when there’s many more options available on the market.

What are Power Rankings?

Essentially, they’re commonly used in sports leagues like the NBA to track and compare the best/worst performing teams, often changing weekly based on results and how teams play.

I often get asked via email or on social media what the best sets of the (insert current) year/month are, and I usually rattle off what I personally like, so to start 2022, I’ve decided to start a regular series where I track and rank what the best 10 LEGO sets are at the end of each month.

This isn’t meant to be scientific or data-driven (some of these I haven’t personally built/own yet) – just my personal opinion of what I think are the best LEGO sets of 2022!

Of course, for a more comprehensive evaluation of LEGO sets, you can read my LEGO reviews for more detailed opinions. For sets that I’ve reviewed, I’ll also include the scores next to the power rankings, but it’s quite unlikely that I’ll get to review every amazing set of 2022 – I sometimes build and miss out reviewing due to time/scheduling issues.
