Medieval March Contest – Win Medieval Town Square, Viking Village, and Medieval Castle sets!

The 10332 Medieval Town Square just dropped for all LEGO fans and to celebrate that, we’re holding a Medieval March Contest where you can win medieval-themed LEGO sets!

At stake are 10332 Medieval Town Square, 21343 Viking Village, and 31120 Medieval Castle that will be awarded to 4 separate winners in 2 different categories.

Medieval Market Stall Category

Build and photograph your own medieval market stall for a chance to win the grand prize of 10332 Medieval Town Square or the runner-up prize of 21343 Viking Village!

All you have to do is construct a market stall out of LEGO bricks that would thematically fit into the Medieval Town Square and take a photo of it outdoors.

The town square already has a cheese vendor, but what about a fur trader? Or a mead brewer? Or a wizarding wares supplier? Felsa’s market is open to all arts, crafts, and foodstuffs, even magic!

Build a physical cart, kiosk, tent, or what-have-you and take a clear photo of it outdoors to give it a nice, natural look appropriate to the times (and so we can see those details!) then share it on Instagram, Reddit, or Discord to enter.

If you don’t have an account, you can easily register for a Reddit or Instagram account to be considered.

Medieval Minifig Category

What’s a town without townies? For minifig fans, we’ve got a second category for you: Medieval Minifig.

Come up with an interesting character and take a photo of it to enter to win one of two Creator 3-in-1 31120 Medieval Castle sets.

Use parts from other medieval sets or tap into Star Wars, Ninjago, DreamZzz, and other themes for fitting torsos and legs. We’ll allow custom prints on original LEGO parts too as well as third-party accessories like capes, hats, armor, etc.

Judges have their own preferences about LEGO purity so bear that in mind.

The minifig portrait can be taken outdoors in nature or indoors in a set so long as it’s well presented and shows the minifig in an appropriate environment.

Contest deadline

The contest runs from 4 March to 7 April 2024 22:00 CET (use this time converter link to find out what that is in your local time zone, so get assembling and shooting!

We can’t wait to see what wares and townies you’ll bring to Felsa’s open market in the town square!

Tips on taking photos

  • Reflections on LEGO parts can be a nightmare so the easiest way to avoid dealing with them is to take photos on a cloudy day or in some partial shade.
  • Avoid putting your models or minifigs in or near grass because it has very distracting sharp shapes and it’s out of scale for most LEGO models. Go for dirt, gravel, or –my fave – moss instead.
  • Find a background of trees or use another medieval LEGO set as your scenery to create that forest or castle vibe.
  • Put a good distance between your LEGO market stall and the background or scenery so that your subject stands out against a slightly out-of-focus (and less distracting!) background.
  • Get the whole subject in focus. Use a sensible depth of field that shows your model clearly rather than having details be out of focus.

How to enter

  1. Build a small market stall model out of LEGO bricks or create a minifigure
  2. Take a photo of it (market stalls in a natural environment outdoors; minifigs either outdoors or in a brick-built set)
  3. Share it on any of these supported social media platforms with the following instructions:

Instagram: mention @jayong28 and @fourbrickstall in the caption (eg, “My medieval market stall/minifigure for the Medieval March contest by @jayong28 and @fourbrickstall”)

Reddit: post your photo to r/studshooters with [Medieval March Contest] in the title

Discord: post your photo to the #medieval-march-contest channel in the Four Bricks Tall Community

Share on all 3 platforms for guaranteed visibility by the judges and to let others see your entries.

Disclaimer: Instagram, Reddit, and Discord are not affiliated with or sponsors of this contest.

Prizes are courtesy of LEGO (via the LEGO Ambassador Network) and Jay’s Brick Blog.

You can enter both the Medieval Market Stall and Medieval Minifig categories with one photo but be sure to make the builds and characters completely visible. Don’t cover one with the other. The more photos with more angles, the better.

Entries are limited to 2 per person per category (2 market stalls and 2 minifigs max).

Judges

The judges of the Medieval Market Stalls Contest will be Jay Ong, LEGO photographer Anna Bitanga aka Four Bricks Tall, and a special guest judge, Gonzalo Carro aka bricks_fan_uy who is the fan designer of the Medieval Seaside Market. The Medieval Seaside Market is now in the review stage on BrickLink Designer Program.

Judging criteria

We already know that voting will be tough with all the creativity in the LEGO fandom so we have some criteria that will help us pick our winner:

  • Fun idea
  • Interesting creation
  • Nicely composed and clear photo

You don’t have to be a master builder or professional photographer to enter this contest. We’re mostly looking for something fun, fitting, and legible.

We’ll keep in mind that carts and kiosks can have similar builds, so we’ll rely on our collective experience and networks to make sure there aren’t any fully copied ideas. Because there’s going to be overlap in models, pay attention to presentation. It could be the thing that separates your model from others that look like it.

If we have any doubts about originality, we’ll reach out.

Winner selection and announcement

The winners will be contacted privately on whatever platform they entered on (Instagram, Reddit, or Discord) to verify eligibility and will have 48 hours to respond with the required shipping details. If there’s no response, the judges will select a new winner.

All winners will be announced publicly here on this blog as well as social media accounts of the judges shortly after receiving shipping information.

Shipping and prize fulfillment will be handled by The LEGO Group. This can take up to 8 weeks to process and deliver.

Permission and release

The participants allow the 3 judges to share any photos entered into this contest on their blogs and social media accounts for purposes of announcement, promotion, features, and feedback.

All copyrights will remain with the creator of the build and photo.

Important fine print

  • Participants must be 18+ (no proxies allowed)
  • Prizes are subject to availability per region and can be changed
  • Customs are the winner’s responsibility

  1. Lee Griffin says:

    Who won?

  2. Alessandro says:

    Hallo!
Can we put a signature, on the photo?

  3. Joelle says:

I was wondering if I would be able to enter this contest. I know that I am not 18+, I am in fact 15, but I have been following this blog for the past year or so, and when seeing this contest, thought it could be something I could do. Reading through the post I somehow missed the bit about being 18+ to enter until I had already built my stall, and as I think I had a cool idea, am sad I cannot submit it. I know this is asking much, but would I still be allowed to enter my stall design, being underage?

  4. Alessandro says:

HI! I don’t understand how I should send a photograph to the contest.
Just post it on my Instagram, with the caption as indicated?
And how will the jury find it?
    Thank you!

  5. the Creators Child says:

Which aspect ratio do you recommend for the entries?

  6. perorigin says:

Maybe I made something wrong but reddit cancel my post with my photo. Also downvoted.

  7. Nick Neszt says:

    Hey!
I see, we can use third-party stuff for the minifig, what about the stall, just Lego?

  8. perorigin says:

I made a 16:9 photo. How can I post it in instagram without cropping because it cuts part of my photo?

  9. Erik says:

Hi! First of all, thank you for a very fun contest! I have built one completely new vendor for the competition but I also have an existing MOC vendor that’s been included in a bigger build and shared on Instagram before. Is it ok to use this one for a second entry, repurposed to an outdoor setting?

  10. Lee A Griffin says:

Have the winners for the Medieval Village contest been announced yet?

  11. Anna says:

Super cool contest. I was jist wondering, is it necessary to start with a cart? Does every market stand have to start off as a cart from instructions?

  12. perorigin says:

One can use wire to put minifigure in pose?

  13. Dave says:

Can I use an AI generated outdoor medieval background with a genuine Lego stall in the foreground?

  14. BH says:

Quick technical question! When it comes to the stall entries, is it preferred that we use only one minifigure for that photo, or would having something more like 2-3 (possibly including customers) be acceptable?

    • Jay Ong says:

That should be more than fine! Think of it from a composition perspective – if it makes sense to showcase a bustling crowd and if that doesn’t detract from the stall, I say go ahead!

  15. Serhat Tufan says:

    Hello,
First of all thank you Jay for coming up with such a cool contest idea!
My question would be, if it is possible to shoot the market stall/cart also indoors, as long as it is properly set to reflect a medieval setting?
    Thanks,

    • We want to see people taking their sets outdoors for this contest. It’s part of the challenge!

There’s a charm to seeing LEGO out in nature and medieval themed builds fit perfectly.

Plus, free light and pretty backgrounds! Win!

  16. Lucas G says:

    Hi Jay,

I love this! What a fun design competition.

    A quick question:

My kids (3 & 6) were also wanting to enter for fun, but obviously they don’t have social media accounts to do this. Am I able to have one post that is essentially 3 entries – just including 3 different images for each category? TBH, I’m hoping my entry is visibly different to the 3 & 5 year olds so it doesn’t seem like I’m just trying to scam 3 entries for myself!

    Cheers!

    • Jay Ong says:

That’s brilliant. In this case, I’d include a note in the post, either in the caption of Instagram, or in a Reddit/Discord post to ensure that we know that it’s 3 different entries, but that should be fine!

  17. Anonymous says:

    Me, semi good at building,
Also me, under 18 by 2 months.

  18. Greg N. says:

me: “Oh my gosh, I gotta enter, that’s a chance at free LEGO!”
also me: (lacks any sort of design savviness and free-floating bricks to build something with)
Don’t get me wrong, I like contests like this that don’t require me to make an account or repost things on social media, but I do sort of wish they weren’t already geared towards people that have a lot of LEGO/skill with LEGO.

    • You don’t need a lot of skill or bricks to make a small stall or a minifig. There are also easy templates made available by the guest judge.

      • Jon says:

But unfortunately you have to commit to another social media platform to enter….and since Jay is a judge include a classic space astronaut riding a goat in your build for a shot at winning.

        • Haha! Might get his vote! But make it Blacktron. I think that’s his favorite.

There are 3 options to enter, but you don’t need to have accounts on all 3 platforms.

Most people have an Instagram account though.

From past feedback and experience running multiple contests, people want to see the other entries so there will be no email entries for this contest.

Perhaps in the future there could be submissions to the website, but that’s something to be evaluated after a few more contests.

      • Greg N. says:

I’m not on Instagram, is there any other way to get the PDFs?

  19. Sarah says:

    Ohh this is awesome!
Are we allowed to create something inspired by books/films/t.v shows?
    Have fun creating
    Thank you
