LEGO 31210 Modern Art, and more August 2023 releases revealed!

LEGO has revealed several new August 2023 sets, including 31210 Modern Art, a trippy, LEGO take on abstract modern art!

The LEGO Art theme strategy seems to literally be throw everything at a wall (including Spider-Man), and 31210 Modern Art is no exception, and possibly the most random, and highbrow set LEGO has released. At least it looks to be a fantastic affordable parts pack?

Apart from that, we have a new LEGO Super Mario set, 71427 Larry’s and Morton’s Airships Expansion Set and 11032 Creative Color Fun which joins the LEGO Classic theme.

There are no wrong ways to create: just experiment and have fun with the limitless possibilities. It’s impossible to make a mistake! The accompanying building instructions are not there to tell you what to do, but rather toinspire you with aspirational images and suggestions for your artistic journey.

I feel like LEGO sent me on one of those art critic journeys.
I went through all the same modern art tropes when I saw this and don’t know if LEGO is being really clever or being too clever and cynically money grabby

I thought about all the normal responses to modern art that we already do.
I thought about my own responses to a De Kooning painting for example and then realised I did the same thing to this LEGO.

    1) my 2 year old [insert child] can paint this

    2) it’s interesting but why those colours

    3) I feel like I understand where they are going with it but I still don’t like it

    4) it’s challenging how we look at what art or in this case LEGO sets as premade images of the real world but instead taps into that collective ability in all of us to create and reshape the world using simple symbols and concepts to express ourselves

    5) am I reading too much into this and feel like I know more about the artist and the intentions beyond what’s actually happening

    6) ugh art has really just made me think about what art is and if that’s what it’s done it’s probably done what it needed to do regardless of whether I like it or not

    7) it really is a good parts pack. I wonder if in the end I’ll buy it cos I do like those flat curvy bits … I wonder if they can do it in recolours

    8) have I just moved from the intellectual modern art straight into the commercial pop art aesthetic where we just buy it cos Andy Warhol says it’s art.

    9) or is this all just Dadaism and the equivalent of a signed toilet seat

    10) I’ve over thought it.

    11) I do like art.

  2. Jeff Cooper says:

That “art” set is so stupid. i can make that with my leftover pieces and it will still look better than this mess!

  3. Chris says:

Lego group getting rid of their unusable inventory in an EOFY set spun as “Modern Art”

  4. Andrew Gardiner says:

Not so sure about the modern art aspect but it could be a useful parts pack with all those curved tiles.

  5. Mark says:

No issues with the art concept, but why choose such an unattractive and limited in use colour palette? Coming soon like a bat-out-of-hell at 50% off to a store near you.
