Just like its real-life counterpart, this stunning LEGO model is truly a one-of-a-kind piece of engineering excellence. Designed in close collaboration between engineering experts from the LEGO Group and McLaren Racing as the new Formula 1 race car was in development, the new model plays homage to the team’s iconic 2021 season livery, while giving fans a glimpse of what they might expect from McLaren Racing’s new F1 season model.

The LEGO Technic version of the McLaren masterpiece is fully modeled on the life-size version featuring a V6 cylinder engine with moving pistons, steering activated from the cockpit, suspension and a differential lock.

The new LEGO Technic McLaren Formula 1™ Race Car is the first LEGO Technic incarnation of a Formula 1 car and offers racing fans a meticulous translation of McLaren’s pioneering design and cutting-edge technology that’s so crucial on-track.

This set offers Formula 1 enthusiasts a chance to recharge and relax with a hands-on, focused building activity that helps them explore their passion for the sport.

It’s a great time to be an Formula 1 and Technic fan, and it’s great to see LEGO give us a detailed Formula 1 car at this scale, and complexity after an extremely long hiatus – the McLaren license is also a huge bonus.

what do you think of the LEGO Technic McLaren Formula 1 Race Car? Will you be picking it up?

I’m a hard core McLaren fan (Bruce McLaren was a kiwi and so am I) but tbh this leaves me a bit meh. I will need to read other reviews before I buy this. I’d Rather have seen thIs as a Creator Expert set that could make more use of slopes and smaller parts to make it look more like an F1 car from 2022 than 1982.
I hope I’m wrong because the idea of having a scale Lego set of a car from my favourite team would be great.

  2. Brian says:

This makes ne wonder if the 1/8 scale car will be a McLaren…

  3. Rich says:

Will it ever find its way to a normal retailer which will offer a discount (eg. Myer 20%)?

    Hi Jay !

Well, that’s a very nice surprise to me; and I really like this car. I’ve been a huge McLaren fan since I was little. But to state that this is the first F1 car in Technic;… I think you got that wrong. There were models before from Ferrari, McLaren and Williams…
The Silver Champion was a huge model made in honor of the McLaren 1998 winning car. I just sold that set not too long ago.

But I’ll definitely will be looking out for a review of this set and will be picking one up later when available…

Thanks for giving us great reviews to read !

I’m a huge F1 fan and have been for many years but I’ve never been particularly into Technic. This might be the set to change all that!

What’s interesting about this set though is that it is based on the 2022 specification car, which is quite a radical change in design, most evidenced by the rear wing shape on the model.

Yet, they’ve given it the 2021 McLaren livery.

I don’t think the 2022 livery will be radically different (we’ll know on the 11th February), but it’s interesting that they’ve branded the set as the 2022 McLaren, when it’s not quite that. I’m also surprised McLaren/Lego haven’t jumped on the marketing opportunity to launch it with the 2022 livery on the same day or day after the real car is unveiled.

Then again, I suppose these designs are locked in quite early at Lego to get the pieces manufactured, and maybe the livery wasn’t confirmed at the time. I just hope the real car isn’t radically different or I’ll probably be obsessively trying to match the pieces on the aftermarket!
