LEGO Dune Ornithopter (10327) officially unveiled with realistic flapping wings!

LEGO has just revealed the 10327 Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter, one of the most exciting sci-fi sets ever! Dune has to be one of the most frequently requested licenses, and you’ll soon be able to own your very own LEGO Icons ‘thopter that’s inspired by Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic

The 1,369-piece LEGO Dune Ornithopter will released exclusively on 1 February from LEGO.com or your local LEGO Store, and will be priced at a very respectable US$164.99. While it’s a bit of a wait to get your hands on this, you can pre-order it now from LEGO.com

Update: check out my review of the LEGO Dune Ornithopter to see it in action!

Most excitingly, the set comes with an epic lineup of eight minifigures which include Paul Atreides, Chani, Lady Jessica Atreides, Duke Leto Atreides, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, Gurney Halleck, Dr. Liet Kynes and everyone’s favourite swordmaster, Duncan Idaho.

Its most impressive feature are its mechanical wings and landing gear, allowing the model to mimic the flapping or buzzing of the Ornithopter’s eight wings, which also fold inwards as it dives and also features retractable landing gear.

I was lucky enough to be in the room in Billund, Denmark where LEGO Design Master Mike Psiaki unveiled it at LEGO Fan Media Days 2023, and demonstrated the LEGO Ornithopter’s functions to us.

It’s seriously cool and for fans of Dune, especially Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 epic, I can guarantee that you’ll be blown away by the size and scale of the LEGO Ornithopter.

LEGO have gone above and beyond with the minifigure selection, with 8 key characters from the movie, including a very imposing Baron Harkonnen, complete with his creepy elongated body!

Paul Atreides, Chani, Lady Jessica Atreides, Duke Leto Atreides, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, Gurney Halleck, Dr. Liet Kynes and Duncan Idaho feature in the set, and LEGO have done a great job capturing their likenesses in the set.

While Baron Harkonnen might be a bit of an odd choice considering he was nowhere near an Ornithopter, the design team felt that they had to include him, and he’s brought to life thanks to a very long fabric cape that goes across his body to emulate his look as he emerges from his bath.

The LEGO Dune Ornithopter features two new elements, a new cockpit canopy in trans-black, as well as four of the massive (and bendy) wings which were developed specifically for this set to allow the Ornithopter’s wings to look as realistic as possible as they flit up and down.

And yes, it’s a very swooshable set, and a lot of fun. Check out the video of Mike Psiaki showing off the LEGO Ornithopter when it was unveiled to us in Denmark a month ago.

10327 Dune Atreides Royal Ornithopter will be available from 1 February 2024 from LEGO.com or your local LEGO Store. Preorders are now open online!

Now THAT is a crazy impressive set!! WOW!!! I won’t be purchasing it myself bc it doesn’t fit with my aesthetic of LEGO and I’m still making my way through the books (haven’t seen any of the movies), but I bet it’s going to be a HUGE success!
