LEGO Gift Idea: Ambient Light LEGO Letters

LEGO superfans can be notoriously hard to shop for – they most likely have most or all of the sets they already want, and you always run the risk of buying a set they already have.

The fine folks at WLWYB (We Love What You Build) recently sent over one of their new Ambient Light LEGO Letters for me to check out, an I think they’re pretty neat. They’re also the team responsible for the LEGO Periodic Table of Elements

You get all 26 letters of the Alphabet to choose from, and you have the option of either ordering a pre-built version for US$59.95 or US$49.95 if you build it yourself – with free shipping worldwide.

To sweeten the deal, you can use the discount code JAYSBRICKBLOG to get 10% off sitewide (valid until 6 August 2021)

The LEGO Light Letters are made out of bricks, and I like their classic Serif design, which is great if you’re a fan of typography. When I first received and unboxed it, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the LEGO bricks weren’t glued together for the pre-built version.

The bricks are pretty basic, and the construction is quite simple – with an LED Light Strip hidden beneath it, and it has a thin layer of plastic at the front, which gives off a soft glow.

Here’s a look at the letter lit up! Despite it being built out of LEGO, the light works quite well, and doesn’t leak. It’s quite bright, and gives off a warm glow wherever you choose to display it.

The LEGO Light has a USB cable connected to it, which you can stick into a battery pack, or even your computer’s USB port to power it up.

It works as advertised, and if you like lamps, or want an extra light to illuminate your face during Zoom calls at your desk, it’ll do the job well. It also makes for a neat background accessory on your desk, or shelf, especially if you can figure out how to easily power it.

One of the downsides is that it’s quite bright, and there isn’t a way to adjust the brightness of the LED strip, which means that you can’t quite use it as a nightlight.

If there was a way to dim and adjust the brightness, this would’ve been an ideal nightlight for toddlers and kids, especially since you can pick either their initials, or their full name if you have cash to splash.

It being LEGO, you are of course encouraged to customise it to your heart’s content, and if you’re into LEGO Photography, it does work quite well as a lightsource, or as a way to take cool illuminated photos.

At US$49.95 (for the DIY version), the LEGO Ambient Light is a little on the pricey side, but as it includes Free Worldwide Shipping, it works out to be pretty reasonable, and with Christmas coming up, I think it’d make a pretty good gift for any LEGO-obsessed fan.

The box it comes also looks good, so they definitely have gifting in mind. These LEGO Lights are manufactured and assembled in the EU, so you’re not getting these from some dodgy China dropshipping site which will take 6 weeks to arrive.

If you really want to splash out, it would be quite an extravagant gift to get someone’s entire name… and throw in a USB Hub to light them all up. Or just get their initials if you’re on a budget.

The personalised nature of this LEGO Light is another nice plus.

Don’t forget, you can use the discount code JAYSBRICKBLOG to get 10% off sitewide, which is valid until 6th August 2021.

Special thanks to WLWYB for sending over this light for this feature, and for hooking me up with a discount code to share!

Got mine in today ! Took about 30 minutes to put together and it was great fun. Packaging was great and damage free, all parts are there and instructions spot on !
Like Jay said before; I got myself the W and it uses a lot of the LED string, so it gets quite bright in the end. But very cool and definitely worth at least once; if they were $10 cheaper I would get more of them; to spell my whole name.

Has anyone ordered these fro the UK? I’m trying to get my head round the taxes … from what I can tell from https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/shopping/buying-online-from-europe-post-brexit/ as long as I don’t order the whole alphabet, it shouldn’t cost me extra, as theVAT is included in the cost & the total will be under £135. But it seems very confusing!

Sorry. I don’t know much about VAT and Europe. Have you tried reaching out to the WLWYB team either through email or social media? They’re fairly responsive and they should be able to help with this.

Are they even allowed to sell this? Seeing as it uses official LEGO elements?

    Thanks Jay
This is a great idea and I have already ordered a couple of letters.
I also just read the order confirmation email and it was an entertaining read. What a cool little company – thanks for sharing!

I ordered mine ! Your discount gave me another $5.00 off. Thanks Jay !

  6. Lucas Renzi says:

On the issue of dimming it, can’t you just built interspersed 1×8 flats in front of the light?
