LEGO to phase out plastic packaging for baseplates from March 2022
Following on from LEGO’s stellar first-half of 2021 financial results, LEGO, via the LEGO Ambassador Network have issued a brief update on LEGO’s transition away from single-use plastic in its packaging.
In the announcement yesterday, LEGO had mentioned that , following a successful trial of paper bags, we’ll begin seeing new paper packaging in some products from March 2022, which is only about 6 months away!
LEGO statement on paper packaging for baseplates
Over the next few months you will likely see some products with “retiring soon” branding or perhaps a local retailer reporting that they are no longer able to order certain products. We want to share ahead of time that there is no need to be alarmed about baseplates.
In 2022, baseplates will be changing from their current plastic packaging to more sustainable paper packaging. Besides packaging, there are no additional changes with the LEGO baseplates and you will still be able to get the same colors and sizes in 2022 that you can purchase today. You can expect to see the new packaging around March 1, 2022.
Current Product Number | Product Number as of March ’22 | Product Name |
10700 | 11023 | Green Baseplate |
10701 | 11024 | Gray Baseplate |
10714 | 11025 | Blue Baseplate |
11010 | 11026 | White Baseplate |
This is great news, and I personally can’t wait to see what the new packaging will look like – I expect they’ll be in some sort of cardboard envelope, or satchel.
This also bodes well for LEGO’s commitment to transition towards 100% sustainable packaging by 2025, and I would very much like to see LEGO’s inner plastic polybags go next.
Below is a typical soft plastic recycling run, filled with numbered LEGO plastic bags which I recycle in my local supermarket. It’s quite disheartening to see how much single-use plastic is used, especially for a large Creator Expert-scale set, so hopefully we’ll see more developments in this space soon.
