Sneak Peek of the upcoming LEGO Ideas Orient Express (21344) set

A LEGO for Adults catalogue has given us a sneak peek of 21344 The Orient Express Train, an upcoming LEGO Ideas set that’s tipped to be launched by the end of the year.

The page in the catalogue has since been removed but it gives us our very first look at the upcoming train, a highly detailed model of the legendary Orient Express train, which celebrates its 140th anniversary this year.

We don’t have official pricing, piece count or a release date yet, so we’ll need to wait for the official reveal which should be coming really soon!

Train fans will be in for a treat with the model, which notably has been colour-swapped to blue, matching The Orient Express that’s more widely known in popular culture and is the current livery of the active train.

The set also comes with 8 minifigures featuring a lively cast of characters, from an engineer, conductor, as well as guests on the opulent train.

For reference, here’s a look at the original The Orient Express, a legendary train Ideas submission by LEt.sGO, which demonstrates just how much the final model has differed. The locomotive doesn’t look as beefy or as detailed, but there are two passenger cars instead of the singular one which I think does the model justice by making it look more balanced like a complete Orient Express Train.

The big question on everyone’s mind however is, will this fit on standard LEGO train tracks? It’s a bit hard to tell from the photos as they’re quite low resolution, but LEGO Train enthusiasts should be encouraged by the presence of standard train elements like these bogies.

We’ll need to wait for the official reveal and more detailed photos to find out if it will indeed fit on standard LEGO tracks, but it sure does look promising from this sneak peek!

Hopefully LEGO have learned from the Hogwarts Express debacle, where the train was just too large to fit on standard track.

What do you think of the LEGO Orient Express from these photos?

  1. Dudley G Henderson says:

I think everyone that voted to make this happen will be disappointed in the final Lego version. The engine isn’t even as detailed as the Emerald . The passenger cars are more reasonable but as a model railroader turned Lego train builder, this doesn’t live up to expectations. The engine is way too small and simple to represent the Orient Express. I think the designer of the original will be flabbergasted at how much the original design has been dumbed down.

  2. Russ says:

Many have complained about it not being the original steam engine. Myself included. In real life the Orient Express is pulled by different engines as it travels across the route. The two passenger cars are nice, but $300.00 for a blue 4 6 0 basically the same engine as other sets. I understand not making new parts to a point, but the original set as it was designed would be nice. I wish Lego would do more trains, not rehash of earlier models. I would pay good money for the Union Pacific Big Boy with two, or more passengers cars, a dining car, Pullman car, luggage car, and a mail car. Now that would be a great set with motor functions. Only to dream.

  3. Jack says:

Is it odd that quite a few sources have said the orient express is releasing on the 1st of November but as of 5 days before its release, there are no official pictures from the lego website? Is it possible it meant the 1st of december?

  4. Lynn says:

Jay, you need to do a side by side comparison. That is totally Edward carrying the old coaches from Thomas the Tank engine, lol!

  5. Adam Brcic says:

I hope to buy two sets. Combine the engine into a larger version, and keep 4 passenger trains.

  6. Wim Goris says:

Well, that’s definitely not the model I voted for… Why does LEGO have to ruin a perfect train model once again ? This is what the AFOL’s voted for, but not the redo in a blue version of Thomas the train.
They should have kept the engine and car, and people would have bought more sets to add another car, or two…
I was looking forward to this so much, and now it’s another kid’s oriented train model, none of us voted for or asked for ?…

    Very disappointed about this.

  7. Train Foamer says:

I’m happy anytime LEGO releases a new train set, especially when it is geared at AFOL’s. The color and carriage designs are great and overall I like it. I do wish there was more to the locomotive as it looks like they merged a beginner set with an expert set. I’m thinking the loco will need to be modified for my taste… something more like an Emerald Night style to show the true pedigree of the Orient Express.

It would have also been great if the set was a larger loco and one car, with others sold al a cater like the Santa Fe was. Regardless, still on the list to pick up.

  8. Mark says:

Why even call this an Ideas set now? Its relevance to the original fan submission is purely in name only. I’d feel insulted if lego turned my visually powerful and elegant model into a goofy looking ill-proportioned set, Further ruined with mini-figs which don’t work with replica models like this . Embarrassing.

    • Dan says:

I could prob get over some of the changes, but changing the locomotive colour to blue is the red line for me that now ruins the look.
It’s now just a lego train. Which is fine but the locomotive now might as well just be a regular train set rather than something more special.

  9. Keven says:

Looks gorgeous but hesitant after the Hogwart Express’ 100% use of stickers on train livery pieces.

  10. Robin Felton says:

If it fits on standard track I will be buying it, otherwise no thanks!

  11. Primus says:

The locomotive looks like a recolored Hogwarts Express. While I wasn’t expecting a 1:1 copy of the original Ideas submission, I would have preferred them to recolor the Emerald Night instead. Then it somewhat justifies the $299 price point.

If this is truly aimed at adult collectors then make a model that looks good!

Granted, I’ll probably get a copy or two depending on finalized price and retool the engine to look better.

  12. Lukas builds Lego says:

As excited as I was for this set, I find myself quite disappointed. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to have much in common with the one submitted by LEt.sGO and doesn’t quite live up to what I expected from an adult-oriented set. Many have noted that the locomotive looks more like Thomas The Tank Engine, and the two passenger cars resemble Ukrainian railways passenger cars more than the classic Orient Express. Beyond its name, this set doesn’t capture the essence of the Orient Express. It’s the first time I’ve felt let down by a LEGO set.

  13. Mr Redfield says:

I like it, but it looks a bit dainty next to the mighty SNCF 241.P. Still, there were many different locomotives that pulled the orient express, so I can’t fault them for inaccuracy. And it’s nice to get two carriages.
    Looking forward to the release.

  14. Andrew says:

Hopefully the fan designer will make their instructions available for sale. This watered-down version is disappointing, and $300 is steep.

  15. This Guy says:

    2540 pieces. $299. November 1st

  16. Shawn L Brown says:

Ugh. The Lego Ideas model is much better! I was really looking forward to it. I probably won’t even get this one.

  17. IJP says:

I’d be pretty upset if I’d designed that Ideas model and Lego turned it into “My First Thomas The Tank Engine.” Awful in comparison. They’re not even remotely the same. As a train set it’s OK, but it’s not what I expected of this set.

  18. Nicki says:

I have been looking forward to this since I got to take the orient express this past spring.
I agree with the ‘Thomas the tank’ comment. 🙁
The blue is wrong for the OE, too cartoonish.
And the inside is just meh.
Hope it’s actually much better and that’s why they pulled the photos.

    • Big Train Bricks says:

I can understand why you are displesed with the set but I will disagree. It does look kinda like Thomas the tank engen but there are several things to be happy with: 1) This is the first train in LEGO Earth Blue. 2) It is the perfect train for a Agents train moc. 3) This is my new favorite LEGO train set. Before it was 79111. The last thing is that this stohes my wounds after The Big Boy was not approved and that it has a shower so you can place a bathing minifig in the shower.

      • Big Train Bricks says:

ON TOP OF THAT THEY ADDED A NEW PISTON ROD PIECE!

      • John says:

During the selection process there were two trains, The Orient Express and the Polar Express. Lego selected the Orient Express over the Polar Express. Why did they select any of the trains if their intention was to deliver something completely different from the submission?

  19. Scott says:

I’m tired of the UCS Hogwarts Express being described as “too wide for regular Lego track”. Swap the 7L axles for 6L, leave out the 1/2 width bushes, and hey presto, it fits. Some more work is required to allow the front bogie to rotate, but it’s not difficult. Needs a bit more effort to motorise, but still not impossible. Looking forward to the Orient Express!

  20. S.J says:

I mean, the interior is classy, but the front locomotive is not that accurate.

    • Mr Redfield says:

I’d like it if they told us what locomotive it’s based on. Maybe give us some details in the instructions or something.

  21. Art says:

the engine looks more like Thomas the train than the iconic oriental express.

I would rather pay 50 or even 100 bucks more to get an close to the original ideas engine with 2 wagons.

lego proves again they don’t understand Trains and all the train fans World wide at all.

it’s train is for loyal train fans an joke it’s very similar to the 120 $ hogwarts set.

sorry railroaders we all got fumbled again from lego

  22. Andrew says:

I’ll get it, because it’s a train, but seriously that loco looks like it’d be happier on suburban branch lines than a continental express. I’m not familiar with the history of OE locomotives, but to me the fan submission looked far more compelling. To be honest in those pics it looks like the most recent Hogwarts Express loco recoloured blue – a 4-6-0 loco with a six-wheeled tender.

I’d have preferred a set like the Crocodile Locomotive, where the prototype was matched as closely as possible, and yet it was still possible to power it to run on standard track.

    • Fiona says:

Agree, the Ideas model is much better – far more authentic and detailed. I would have preferred the green too. I’m disappointed.

  23. Big Train Bricks says:

Yes it will fit on the tracks. However the coaches are 8 studs wide not 6.(this does not include the bogies.)

  24. steve says:

Lego just going to make huge sets from now on?
