The Super Mario Bros. Movie is how we’ll get LEGO Mario Minifigures

This morning’s Nintendo Direct was filled with all sorts of surprises, such as the announcement of the all-star cast of the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie, and a theatrical release date – 21 December, 2022.

The Super Mario Bros movie announcements begin at about 29:00 in the September 2021 Nintendo Direct.

The English voice actors of this star-studded (nice) animated film were revealed, with Chris Pratt voicing Mario, The Queens Gambit’s Anya Taylor-Joy voicing Princess Peach, and Jack Black voicing Bowser.

Rounding out the cast is Charlie Day as Luigi, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike. Charles Martinet has an unknown cameo at the moment.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is Illumination and Universal’s big bet for 2022, especially with the December 21 release date, and the all-star cast cements that this is going to be a lot of money, marketing and investment funnelled into making the Super Mario Bros movie a success.

Which brings me to my prediction – LEGO and Nintendo fans have been clamouring for proper LEGO Super Mario minifigures, and I think that the Super Mario Bros movie is the ticket to actual minifigures.

Chris Pratt has so many lead LEGO minifigures to his name – from Emmet, to Star-Lord, to Owen Grady, so if I were a betting man, the next Chris Pratt minifigure is absolutely going to be Super Mario.

I can also see quite a large LEGO Super Mario Bros. movie theme coming in the 3rd or 4th quarter of 2022. LEGO and Universal Pictures (and Illumination by extension) has a pretty long-standing relationship – we’ve seen themes for Trolls, Minions Rise of Gru (which still isn’t out in theatres) and Jurassic World, so I can absolutely see the Super Mario Bros. Movie getting the same attention.

Throw in some Brickheadz as well, and maybe a D2C set or two, and you have a full-blown, LEGO Super Mario Bros. movie with the Nintendo minifigures everyone wants.

What do you think? Do you think LEGO will finally give us Mario Minifigures via the movie?
