Turns out, motorising the LEGO Orient Express is more than possible

When we were in Billund for RLFM Days (an annual meeting that LEGO holds for select LEGO Fan Media), they unveiled the 21344 The Orient Express to much fanfare but one of the main things that we took away from the unveiling was that the design team mentioned that the Orient Express wasn’t designed to be motorised because it was simply “too heavy”.

It’s the first time that a train had been selected for a LEGO Ideas set, and the Train Community fan were also excited by the prospect of detailed LEGO Train designed for adults, as well as it being an officially licensed Orient Express set.

So to have it being stated on the record that it was too heavy left many of us with raised eyebrows, and were eager to test it out.

Ahead of the LEGO Orient Express‘ release on 1 December 2023, you can check out my review of 21344 The Orient Express to see more of the set, how it compares to the legendary Emerald Night and what train fans thought of the set.

On the ongoing Orient Express Motorisation saga, I have to highly recommend RacingBrick’s video on Youtube, where he thoroughly debunks what LEGO said about motorising the Orient Express.

It’s a really great video with plenty of examples of different ways to motorise and make The Orient Express run on track, with techniques from Eurobricks and demonstrates various locomotives pulling it, from the 10277 Crocodile Locomotive, to the 60336 City Freight Train and also demonstrates how the tender neatly fits Powered Up.

It’s a really fun video, and will give fans who plan to motorise The Orient Express some inspiration ahead of the 1 December 2023 launch!
