Vote for the best LEGO set of 2023!

As we close out 2023, it’s that time of the year for the annual Jay’s Brick Blog Best LEGO Set of 2023 community vote!

2023 has been an absolutely blistering year for LEGO, with dozens of incredible releases and also some surprises like the LEGO Friends Reboot, return of Lord of the Rings (yes, it was this year!) and also the introduction of new themes.

This is a fully democratic reader vote, so I’m placing the power in your hands to help decide the best LEGO set of 2023!

I’ve made a few changes to the form – namely that for the main nomination section, I’ve changed it to a multiple choice question format, to make it easier to cast your seeding vote.

There will be 2 parts to this vote: first, nominate your vote for the best LEGO set of 2023 via this Google Form– all you need to do is cast your nomination via multiple choice question by 10.00pm AEDT Saturday, 23 December.

I have also included optional votes for Best LEGO Minifigure and LEGO theme, most improved LEGO theme, and a question about whether you spent more or less than LEGO compared to the last year – feel free to answer those as well as I’ll collate the results and publish the data at the end.

The second part will see results from the survey, providing the seeding for Top 16 sets, which will go into a Tournament Bracket, where we’ll pit each set against each other for a vote on the Jay’s Brick Blog Facebook Page, Instagram Page and Twitter to determine who the ultimate winner is! Bracket Voting will kick off on 24th December!

Last year’s vote was a huge success, and there were some unexpected and crazy upsets – here’s a look at last year’s bracket, to see how it all played out.

Really looking forward to seeing the results of this, so get your votes in before the 23rd!

Oh, and as a special bonus, there will be 5 mystery prizes awarded to anyone that votes in any of the bracket rounds including… a copy of 40504 A Minifigure Tribute, the LEGO House Exclusive, which I picked up in Denmark when I visited a few months ago. I’ll select a winner randomly from anyone who casts a vote on Facebook or Instagram, so that’s all you need to do!

Do note: the box is slightly damaged and dinged when I transported it home, so it’s not exactly in the best condition.

Stay tuned for more prize reveals when the bracket voting begins!

    Hello Jay!
    Is there already a winner?
Did Rivendell win or A-Frame Cabin?
    Greetings from Munich,
    Chris

  2. Jaime says:

i vote for the rivendell set

  3. I don’t see 76419 Hogwarts Castle and Grounds in the list, for me it is the BEST set of 2023

  4. Andrew says:

Would love to see a poll of the best set under $A100. There have been some rippers. I think I’d go for the Up-scale Minifigure, but Donkey Kong relived some great memories.

  5. Kent says:

While I fear that a lot of people will, unfortunately, vote blindly for the biggest, most spectacular set that released in 2023, the fact remains that the biggest or most expensive set isn’t necessarily the “Best.”
While “Best” can be subjective, I think the “Best” LEGO set of 2023 needs to balance a number of different factors and priorities, such as overall price (affordability), price-per-piece/price-per-weight (value), overall appeal (widespread recognition & appreciation), novelty (unusual or rare), presentation (displayability), and availability (exclusivity).
While I like the LEGO Icons and IDEAS sets as much as anyone, I have to admit that they fall flat when it comes to balancing broad appeal, availability, and affordability. Many of the sets are either very large and unattainably expensive (only exacerbated by LEGO-store exclusivity), or rather niche in their subject matter and appeal. That’s why I nominated the LEGO Friends Botanical Garden for 2023 Set of the Year.
While it’s true that I voted for the Lion Knight’s Castle last year, this year saw nearly every LEGO theme significantly up the competition. LEGO CITY saw a wave of often-overpriced but highly-desirable sets that weren’t focused entirely on emergency services. TECHNIC saw a ton of amazing and functional vehicles, including the massive and controversial crawler crane. ICONS revived a wave of nostalgia, while IDEAS churned out odes to pop culture icons. But tip of the top, cream of the crop, was LEGO Friends.
The Friends reboot resulted in a cascade of sets that perfectly balanced the demands of a broad demographic, appealing to both adults and kids, boys and girls, casual fans and die-hard AFOLS–all while offering sets at a huge variety of price points. Many of the builds don’t look out of place in a minifigure-inhabited cityscape, and the sheer creativity and value made many of the sets must-buys. As someone who hated LEGO Friends and minidolls when they were first launched, I am both impressed and humbled by how far the theme has come. Most importantly, these sets are widely available at retailers, often at a discount, making them more accessible to the wider population.
While Rivendelle certainly made a splash when it was revealed, I have good reason to believe that it is instead LEGO Friends that will have the greater cultural impact in the long term. While Rivendelle sits on shelves, the Botanical Garden will be played with. And maybe that’s why I voted for the Lion Knights Castle last year–because it struck a remarkable balance between nostalgia and novelty, displayability and playability.
While I don’t expect, desire, or require others to vote exactly as I did, it is my hope that everyone who votes will take a moment to seriously consider what is the true meaning of “Best” in the context of LEGO’s broader impact on the world. Merry Christmas, and may you all have a Happy New Year!

Je trouve votre analyse très fine et très intéressante, merci de l’avoir partagé !
Je ne voterai donc pas aveuglément pour Rivendell de premier abord !
      Joyeux Noël également

    • Weevy says:

Excellent analysis and I agree with the main points.
Rivendell made its mark, but when I think about what legos are to me, I come to the conclusion that the best sets are the ones you play with.
That’s why City remains for me the best theme and Friends the one that surprised me the most in 2023.

  6. Jon says:

Rivendale will be tough to beat…
Avengers tower might have a better chance if you give your review though

  7. Warren says:

I look forward to this every year, Jay, thank you! But may we just cut to the chase and give the title to Rivendale now? 😂

    • Joe B. says:

That was my thought too. Putting it at the top of the list is a little unfair to the other sets. I cast my vote for it before I even looked at the rest.
