A closer look at the new LEGO Vidiyo Minifigures, and Bandmates Series 2
If you’ve had a chance to check out the new wave of LEGO Vidiyo Summer 2021 sets, you’ll probably have noticed that LEGO have gone absolutely BONKERS with the minifigure designs, and while I’m not the biggest fan of the overall Vidiyo app experience, I do like the minifigures.
So in this post, I’d like to take a deep dive and take a closer look at some if the new Vidiyo minifigures that will be available soon.
The newly introduced BeatBoxes, and Stage Models will be available from June 1st globally except the United States, where they will be available from August 1st. The new Bandmates will be available from October 1st globally.
We’re JUST looking at minifigures as those are really the only things that excite me about Vidiyo.
In case you missed it, here’s all the other Summer 2021 LEGO sets revealed so far:
- Creator 3-in-1 Medieval Castle
- Creator 3-in-1 Ferris Wheel & Space Shuttle
- LEGO City Safari
- Ninjago Seabound (Season 15) & Legacy
- LEGO Mickey & Friends
- Vidiyo Wave 2 Minifigures
- Vidiyo Wave 2
Bandmates Series 2 Minifigures
While I wasn’t a massive fan of Bandmates Series 1, I do think that they’ve stepped it up a notch with Bandmates Series 2, which will also contain 12 new minifigures to collect, and a whole raft of new Beatbits.
The character list and names are as follows, and there should be 2 complete sets per box.
- Slime Singer
- DJ Captain
- Alien Dancer
- Karaoke Mermaid
- Dragon Guitarist
- Vampire Bassist
- Puppy Singer
- Zombie Dancer
- DJ Beatbox
- DJ Rasp-Beary
- Discowgirl Guitarist
- Carnival Dancer
We get some really incredible designs here, the standouts for me are the Vampire Bassist with her brilliant two-toned hairpiece, and sick axe guitar.
Slime Singer has a really cool slimy head, which would work amazingly as a LEGO Clayface minifigure if done right, and DJ Rasp-Beary gives off heavy Kanye West vibes. Oh, and he also has transparent legs which are really exciting.
DJ Beatbox is a whole other level of meta as his head is literally a miniature Beatbox, and I love his all-gold outfit.
The Dragon Guitarist is also pretty cool – that new dragon head is most excellent, and his trans-blue wings are just inspired. Can’t wait to build an army of Dragons this way.
Zombie Dancer Puppy Singer Karaoke Mermaid DJ Captain Discowgirl Guitarist Carnival Dancer Alien Dancer
The rest seem like filler – either re-colours or reverse gendered variants of characters from Bandmates Series 1, but this seems like a big step up from Series 1.
43109 Metal Dragon and 43110 Folk Fairy Beatboxes Minifigures
43109 Metal Dragon Beatbox – US$19.99 / AU$25.99 / EUR19.99
43110 Folk Fairy Beatbox – US$19.99 / AU$25.99 / EUR19.99
As always, LEGO have left the more impressive minifigures for the more expensive sets.
The metal dragon looks really cool, in very classic dragon colours, which takes very liberal cues from Series 18’s Dragon Suit Guy, but I really love the Folk Fairy’s design, especially those ornate transparent butterfly/fairy wings.
43112 Robo HipHop Minifigures
43112 Robo HipHop Car – US$29.99 / AU$39.99 / £24.99
The minifigures from 43112 Robo HipHop Car seem very much like homages to daft punk, and the guy in white has the same headpiece as the Beatbox Robot DJ from Wave 1, but look at that gorgeous gold hairpiece on the lady robot.
43111 Candy Castle Stage Minifigures
43111 Candy Castle Stage – US$29.99 / AU$39.99 / £24.99
For the other duo-stage, we get an awesome cotton-candy ballet dancer which is going to be a hit for young girls all over, with that fantastic wind-swept hair, but I’m more intrigued by the Bear, with his seemingly translucent head, and trans-blue legs.
43113 K-Pawp Concert Minifigures
43113 K-Pawp Concert – US$49.99 / AU$79.99 / £44.99
Who would’ve thought that LEGO would also jump on the k-pop bandwagon with these bright and poppy minifigures.
The Bunny and Cat (?) are standard fare, although the Kitty Keytarist ‘s (coining it) epic mane of hair is pretty impressive.
The star minifigure in the trio is undoubtedly the Unicorn with those sublime, transparent fairy wings, and awesome colour-blocking on her legs and torso. Those fairy wings are incredible, and quite possibly one of my favourite new accessories of 2021 I’ve seen so far.
43114 Punk Pirate Ship Minifigures
43114 Punk Pirate Ship – US$59.99 / AU$119.99 / £59.99
The prices for these stages are a little outrageous, but out of all the expensive Wave 2 Vidiyo sets, I think Punk Pirate Ship has the best set of nautical-themed minifigures.
That Squid Drummer is just sensational (and gives off heavy Splatoon vibes) and I think my pick for the most exciting minifigure in the entire Wave 2 of Vidiyo.
The Black Shark guitarist with his anchor guitar is also pretty neat, even if the minifigure is just a simple re-colour of the Shark Singer from Bandmates Series 1.
43115 The Boombox Minifigures
43115 The Boombox US$99.99 / AU$139.99 / £89.99
The biggest and most expensive Wave 2 Vidiyo set also in my opinion has the least interesting lineup, for the price you’re expected to pay.
The recoloured Alien Singer is cool, especially his trans-pauldrons, but too similar to the one from Wave 1’s Alien DJ Beatbox.
The Zombie/Emo goth-rocker has a neat axe guitar, and the cat guitarist is kinda cute, and the butterfly singer has those amazing new butterfly wings in pink, but compared to all the other sets, this selection of minifigures does seem extremely weak.
I’m really just blown away by the quality, and bold design choices of Vidiyo’s Wave 2 minifigures, but I don’t know what LEGO is trying to achieve with these set prices.
It’s almost like they expect retailers to slash the prices by 50% before anyone buys them as the sets themselves are way overpriced for what you get, even if they contain some pretty sweet minifigures.
I think out of the entire lineup, Bandmates Series 2 has the most promise, in addition to being the most accessible, and I really love the trio of minifigures from 43114 Punk Pirate Ship, and that amazing David Bowie-inspired Unicorn from 43113 K-Pawp Concert.
I’m still shocked by the prices of the brick-built stages. Sure you get some new elements, but looking at the selection of Vidiyo Wave 2, it’s clear that LEGO are banking on some of these exceptional minifigure designs to move sets, but I would only recommend them if they go on deep clearance/sale.
