The online LEGO Minifigure Factory beta will end on 9 September 2022

Back in July, I broke the news that LEGO was testing out a beta for an Online Minifigure Factory, a US-only pilot program that allowed fans to customise their very own minifigure.

It was a pretty novel move, as Minifigure Factory, which was only available select few LEGO flagship stores, was now easily accessible to those in the US.

Alas, all good things must come to an end as LEGO will be wrapping up the beta on Friday, 9 September 2022.

If you’ve been putting off giving this feature a go, I highly encourage jumping on to customise your own minifigure (customer limit of 1), before 9 September.

Minifigure Factory allowed you unprecedented minifigure customisation, and you could personalise your minifigure with icons, text and other cool graphical elements, and looked like a lot of fun.

It isn’t available in Australia, but I had quite a lot of fun playing around with the online customisation tool to design my own minifigures.

At US$11.99 per minifigure, the Minifigure Factory certainly isn’t cheap, but the novelty of your very own personalised minifigure, and the fact that all designs are printed on the torsos still feels like good value.

As this was a beta/pilot program, hopefully LEGO managed to learn about whether there’s actual demand for something like this to rollout in a wider capacity globally, as well as work out operational requirements to make this process more efficient.

I do hope that this isn’t the end of this, and that we’ll be able to see this feature pop up again soon, hopefully in your local LEGO online store.

So heads up, if you were waiting on making use of LEGO Minifigure Factory online, get your designs in before 9 September 2022!

Were you lucky enough to try this beta out? What did you think of your personalised minifigures and this whole experience?

Do you know if or when Minifigure Factory will come back online?

  2. Dan says:

Trying it now, it doesn’t appear to work. Looks like they may have already quietly shut it down perhaps?

In the Belgian/dutch shop you can find a beta under “pick and build” > “build your minifigure”

Sad part here is that you have less freedom in modification of the torso and can only close out of some standards for now, anyway seeing it’s a beta Europe to is promising at least!

Thank you for the blog post, I had tried this a while ago and the site wasn’t working so after seeing this I tried again and ended up ordering one. The price is pretty high for a single minifigure, so I doubt I would order too many more if this becomes a regular feature, but having a unique minifigure is pretty cool.

Awesome stuff, glad it was able to work for you this time.

It’s a really novel experience, and considering all of these are custom-made, the price seems fair, at least until they figure out how to do this at scale.

STILL haven’t received mine. As detailed in my comments on your previous post:

    1) I ordered a custom fig and received( the wrong one, someone else’s custom. Whoops!

    2) I called customer service created another order to get me the right fig. They said keep the old one, we have all your art on file and will send you a new custom fig that you wanted.

    3) That order got cancelled -because you are only allowed to order a single custom fig to any one address!

    4) I called again, and was assured the situation was being sorted out and that my correct custom fig would be sent to me. (and to just keep the wrong one ).

    5) I went on vacation and returned home to find no Lego packages waiting for me. I have received no emails with any new order number or anything.

    6) I just called and customer service was as helpful as they can be. I currently have a new order number that is “under review” so they can remove the block or whatever, and am told that buy tomorrow I should receive a normalemail confirmation of the new order going through.

    I’ll keep you posted.

Oh wow, that sounds like a nightmare sequence of events. I guess it’s these things they’re trying to troubleshoot with the beta – when these things are so manual, mistakes like these seem to rear themselves up more often.

At the very least LEGO Customer Service is brilliant and hopefully they’ll resolve this soon!

That custom minifigure better be worth it!

      • Jimmy says:

        Received the correct fig, huzzah!
And Lego Customer Service was apologetic and also forwarded me a gift card for the trouble, which imo was beyond expectations as with a beta test I understand there will be hiccups.

Happy to forward you pics of you’d like.

This is a scam feature and its good they have cancelled such program

I ordered a figure during the beta and it was a lot of fun. As a result, I was asked to fill out a very comprehensive survey. I am SO VERY hopeful that the beta will lead to this becoming a regular feature on LEGO.com.

If they don’t add it as a regular item on their online shop, they are making a huge mistake. (Like the HUGE mistake of putting minifugures in boxes!!!!)

    Hi Jay!
I was just playing around with that feature last week! It’s so cool! I want to make a custom minifigure “Father of the Bride” of my husband. He’s an architect and has many of many of the sets in a display cabinet. A customized minifigure would be a great way to celebrate our oldest daughter’s upcoming wedding, and look so cute sitting inside the Farnsworth House or Falling Water! I agree that the novelty of having your very own personalized minifigure is worth the price, I had planned to make several.
Thanks Jay! I would have missed this without your wonderful blog!

    • Jay says:

Oh that sounds really exciting, and congratulations on your daughter’s wedding! That would make a lovely memento.

You’re most welcome, and very happy to help keeping track of all that goes on in the LEGO world!
