First look at the new LEGO Chinese New Year 2021 sets!

For 2021, LEGO will once again release a trio of sets to commemorate the Chinese Lunar New Year festivities!

Update: Check out my review of 80107 Spring Lantern Festival!

Following on from the excellent 2020 Chinese New Year sets, LEGO is once again tapping into China’s rich history and tradition with 2 LEGO sets – 80106 Story of Nian and 80107 Spring Lantern Festival, as well as a DUPLO set 10943 Happy Childhood Moments.

LEGO have revealed these sets at Shanghai’s China International Import Expo. 80106 Story of Nian and 80107 Spring Lantern Festival has a release date of 1 January 2021 in China and Asia Pacific, followed by a wider release worldwide on 10 January 2021.

They will have a wide release, with the sets being available on LEGO.com, LEGO Stores and most specialty toy retailers.

The LEGO Duplo Happy Childhood Moments set will be available across LEGO branded retail stores and LEGO.com globally from January 1st 2021

LEGO 80106 Story of Nian

80106 Story of Nian is a great piece celebrating the myth of the Nian Monster, a ferocious monster that terrorises a village, before the villagers discover that they can scare it away with festive red clothing, firecrackers and bright lights – which of course, is a core part of the Chinese New Year celebration.

The set features a highly detailed Nian Monster (fun fact: Nian also means “year” in Chinese) which looks incredibly, and I love the bright colours and teal elements used. 2

The build includes a traditional Chinese walls and gateway to the village, and the minifigures included have to “defend” and scare away the Nian monster with fireworks and torches.

2021 is also the year of the Ox, and we get also get this minifigure here with a Cow/Bull’s helmet which looks brilliant!

LEGO 80107 Spring Lantern Festival

80107 Spring Lantern Festival recreates the magical atmosphere of the festival which marks the end of the lunar new year celebrations. It features a brick-built Chinese garden with moon gates, pavilion, pond and bridge, a special ox lantern illuminated by a LEGO light brick as well as other must-have items during the festival like a rabbit lantern and a Tang Yuan rice ball.

To inspire children to learn more about Chinese traditions when building, illustrations are telling the legendary stories of Nian. The Lantern Festival is added on the building instructions of the two sets, which is the first time this kind of feature appears in the LEGO Chinese Traditional Festival theme.

10943 Happy Childhood Memories

Not forgetting younger builders, I’m really pleased to see a Duplo set as well, with scenes that call back to the Chinese New Year’s Eve Dinner set.

The new elements such as the kettle, China and rocking horse are really cool, and the addition of red envelopes are also a really nice touch.

80106 Story of Nian and 80107 SPRING LANTERN FESTIVAL seem to have disappeared from the Lego site. They were on my wish list and are gone from there as well.

  2. Peter says:

Out of all those Lego new year sets, Eve’s dinner is my favourite.

I somehow regret that I bought last year’s two sets. They are beautiful, but they are just several individual blocks. Hard to keep for some people like me.

i guess ill pass this year’s set. Nothing looks exciting and lots of similar parts with last year.

  3. Anthony says:

I’ll definitely be getting the two LEGO sets and maybe the Duplo set.

Design is beautiful, definitely playable with the kids. And will look good on display.

  4. Hans says:

The 2 Lego sets are up on the Australian Lego website now with a release date of 1st Jan. But sadly the Duplo set isn’t on the website

  5. Allie says:

These sets look amazing! Lego knocked it out of the park with these sets. The detail on the dragon and the mini figures are incredible and shows how talented the creators at Lego truly are. This would look amazing in anyone’s collection.

    • Jay says:

Yup, I really can’t wait! There’s just something really special and LEGO seems to always bring their A-game with the Chinese New Year sets!

  6. kelvin tsoi says:

Looks wonderful, especially the spring festival. Hopefully printed parts are included instead of stickers. But i’m still on the fence on getting it due to availability, scalpers and price.

    • Jay says:

Definitely looks like it’s mostly printed parts, which continues on from the previous Spring Festival sets.

This year’s release was really well done – the Lion Dance and Temple are still widely available, so I wouldn’t worry too much about availability.

  7. Vector says:

I can’t wait to pick up that Spring Lantern Festival! I love how much detail is crammed into such a small space.

  8. Sean says:

Love these, great to see something different from Lego with these (hopefully) yearly sets.

  9. Ian Hazlehurst says:

Sadly wont be buying these, I didnt get last years, so no point really. I’m holding out for more Star Wars UCS builds.
