LEGO announces 21060 Himeji Castle, a gorgeous Architectural homage to historic Japanese castle

LEGO have officially unveiled 21060 Himeji Castle, a brand new addition to the LEGO Architecure theme, coming 1 August 2023!

Himeji Castle is considered one of the finest surviving example of prototypical Japanese castle architecture, and is located in the city of Himeji, and is arguably one of Japan’s most famous architectural landmarks, making this an excellent addition to LEGO’s Architecture line.

This 2,125-piece Himeji Castle model has a release date of 1 August 2023, and will be available from LEGO.com or your local LEGO Store.

See below for regional pricing and product pages

LEGO have done a beautiful job with Himeji Castle, which is also known as the White Heron Castle or White Eagret Castle, with the white walls, and iconic grey roof.

For fans of Japanese culture, this will also make a great accompaniment to 10315 Tranquil Garden, which also goes on sale on 1 August 2023.

The details are really nice, and I think LEGO have done a superb job replicating Himeji’s Castle appearance, although I think price-wise, it’s a little bit on the expensive side, even if there are over 2000 pieces.

It is quite sizeable and will make for a beautiful display piece, with the LEGO Himeji Castle measuring over 7.5 in. (19 cm) high, 12.5 in. (32 cm) wide and 10.5 in. (27 cm) deep.

I was lucky enough to have visited Himeji Castle in 2015, shortly after the historic site was opened following renovations, and I also visited during the Cherry Blossom season, and I have to say, it looks remarkably close to the real thing, and the LEGO Design Team have done a great job capturing its look.

Having climbed up the Castle, I have a strong connection with Himeji Castle, so will definitely pick this set up for my collection and as a reminder of my time in Japan in 2015.

Check out more photos and my journey to Himeji Castle when I was there in 2015.

I was there back in 2009, and i remember it as beautiful as the one Lego has recreated. Still debating whether to buy it or not…

I am thrilled to see more large-scale architecture sets being released finally! I love the skyline sets, but I love building and displaying the more prominent landmark locations. I will absolutely be purchasing and building this set when it is released.

If I remember the story correctly, many of these old Japanese castles – due to earthquakes and other factors – were constantly removed and rebuilt identically… But they were still considered to be the same castle…

There only are 12 original castles left in Japan (not rebuilt from scratch) – Hinoji is one of those as it was never destroyed by earthquakes, fires or Americans.

I visited Matsumoto one and it was a unique experience in 40 C degrees – cannot imagine samurais in those heavy thick armors defending it and running around those knee-tall steps.

My immediate reaction to your post was one of ecstasy! I love the Japanese aesthetic, so it would typically be a “must buy ASAP” on my lego wishlist. However, within 15 minutes I have cooled considerably due to:

    1. I think the price is too high. AU$270 seems way too much (and I must admit the 2125 pieces seems surprising given the size (which doesn’t look really big to me).
    2. It seems like the average price for an adult lego set is now around $300 (maybe it’s higher?). There are so many sets at this (or higher) price point that it is not realistic to be buying many sets a years, so only the best of the best will get through a purchase decision
    3. Space is limited and choices have to be made!
    4. Looking at it again, I don’t think it’s refined enough to capture the beauty of the original, particularly not to justify the price.

It’s interesting to me to watch my purchase decision change so quickly. There are so many really good sets (also those in the pipeline) that people, (which I assume are those fortunate people), can realistically only buy a few adult type sets per year – or maybe one if it includes Rivendell or the Castle. So sorry Lego, this one has been relegated to my “interested” wishlist, behind 16 others!

That’s the reason I’m waiting till it’s 30-50% off, so far it happened with EVERY architecture set to date. Not to mention that its value will go up (maybe even skyrocket, considering subject matter) once sold out – not worried about waste of money here at all.

I think if you compare with older sets, for example 21017: Imperial Hotel, this is not that bad (that set had half the number of pieces and cost was 3/4 of this set here). Now if we count in roughly 25% inflation for past 10 years, 120 EUR in 2013 would be worth nearly same price as the price tag on this set!
