LEGO Digital Designer (LDD) will be shut down end January, replaced by Bricklink Studio

January 13, 2022 By Jay Ong 4 Comments

Today, the LEGO Group announces that BrickLink Studio will replace LEGO Digital Designer (LDD) as the official virtual LEGO building software going forward. The LEGO Digital Designer (LDD) website will close on January 31st, after which time LDD will no longer be available for download. While downloaded versions of the LDD application will continue to work, people are encouraged to download BrickLink Studio, import their LDD files, and use Studio for 3D LEGO building files, and use Studio for 3D LEGO building.

LEGO Digital Designer was released in 2004 as the LEGO Group’s 3D building tool. LDD pioneered real-time rendering of LEGO bricks, virtual brick connectivity, and the compact LEGO Exchange file format (LXF) which made LEGO models built in LDD light and portable. It has played a prominent role in various offerings, from LEGO Factory, LEGO Design ByME, LEGO video games and movies. Now after almost twenty years since its conception and eighteen years in distribution, LEGO Digital Designer will retire and pass the mantle to BrickLink Studio as the officially supported and maintained 3D building application.

“Our initial vision for LEGO Digital Designer back in 2002 was to make building on a computer accessible and fun for children – to play with and share their creations online.” said Ronny Scherer, producer of the first-generation LEGO Digital Designer. “I am so impressed with how the community of creators has evolved. Builders—enthusiasts and professionals alike—have used LDD in wonderful and unexpected ways. They took ownership and created the most amazing virtual LEGO models and have grown the virtual building ecosystem. I am so proud of the team behind LDD and the greater virtual building community. They have truly inspired a generation of digital LEGO creators.”

Tormod Askildsen, head of AFOL Engagement for the LEGO Group, has been intrigued by digital building since using LDD to bring alternate model instructions for the LEGO Factory Hobby Train set to market in 2007. “When the LEGO Group acquired BrickLink,” Askildsen said, “one of the things that impressed and inspired us was their purposeful development of the Studio software. For digital building to be not only a nice feature for some, but a meaningful part of many people’s LEGO building experience, it must be an integrated and useful part of both the design, the building and the sharing experience. The talented team behind Studio see this clearly and continue relentlessly to further innovate and improve the Studio experience”.

In 2014, then-independent BrickLink created the BrickLink Studio software as a free virtual LEGO building tool. Studio was built on the industry-standard Unity gaming engine and is designed to integrate with the BrickLink Marketplace. Its .io file format is based on the fan community-developed LDraw standard with part connectivity data added to give digital bricks clutch power. Users can import LEGO models built in LDD, LDraw, and other popular tools. Studio includes useful features like model stability checking, built-in photo-realistic rendering, and an integrated instructions maker.

“Studio was created because at BrickLink, there is a great belief in how digital LEGO building could unlock true potential of everyone’s creativity by lowering the entry barriers and motivating people to inspire each other,” says Casper Thingholm, Head of BrickLink. “Going forward, the Studio team will continue to focus on making digital building as intuitive as physical building, and encourage even more builders to share their creations to inspire and help each other.”

A special episode of LEGO Bits N’ Bricks Podcast will be dedicated to digital building with LEGO bricks. Subscribe to the podcast to get a notification when it’s out.

Personally, I’m not much of a MOC builder, and when I do, I prefer building with physical bricks, but I expect this will largely impact many builders who have gotten used to LDD for their design process.

Largely, I think it’s an important step forward and a clue of how LEGO intends to integrate Bricklink’s technology into LEGO’s own digital ecosystem.

Peering into my crystal ball, I think this makes a lot of sense keeping this on Bricklink, as I can foresee LEGO connecting Bricklink Studio functionality to allow users to create custom sets, which are then sold to the public, in the same vein as what we’ve seen with the Bricklink Designer Program

This move seems like a clear indication that LEGO envisions Bricklink to become a marketplace for digital designs, and as it’s plugged into Bricklink’s existing userbase and functionality, bridges the gap between digital designs/concepts and real world usage, thanks to parts within the Bricklink ecosystem.

Interesting stuff, and I’ll be interested in watching this space.

Not just a digital design marketplace — it feels like Lego might be trying to set up Bricklink to be their social / fan side. Lego for official sets, curated play and support. Bricklink for third-party sales, social interactions, custom builds and other fan experiences. I hope you’re right and it sees an expansion of programs like the BL Designer Program to allow more fans a chance to bring their creations to life.

Will the LDD team move on to support BL Studio or have they already been doing that?

I wonder, could this lead to fan design sets having instruction sheets generated through a program like this, with the pieces being sold through pick-a-brick?

I hope so. There are sometimes great creations that are not quite enough for a commercial Lego release, but which people still want to buy. Having a fully integrated process where people can sell creations and order parts from Lego sounds like a win all round. The creator gets paid, Lego gets money from brick sales and the buyer gets a set they otherwise wouldn’t be able to. Probably a very long-term goal with a lot of caveats and considerations regarding manufacturing capability, but using PAB as a starting point with a part list sounds doable.

Here's my review of 41757 Botanical Garden, hands Here's my review of 41757 Botanical Garden, hands down one of THE best sets of 2023 and a gleaming beacon of just how far the LEGO Friends theme has matured.

When you see the LEGO Friends Botanical Garden, it quickly becomes apparent that LEGO have something special on their hands with a design that's simply beautiful.

It's truly a mark of a mature theme, that LEGO could debut a tasteful design like this into LEGO Friends, but crafted in such a way that it will also have broad appeal to City builders, or even fans who want a stunning architectural masterpiece to display their minifigures or minidolls in.

With so many amazing designs and sets being produced by Billund, 41757 Botanical Garden deservedly takes it's place as one of the best LEGO sets of 2023 and I can heartily recommend this set to everyone, and I have a gut feeling that this will be one of the best-selling LEGO Friends set of the year.

LEGO have revealed a whole bunch of Marvel and DC LEGO have revealed a whole bunch of Marvel and DC Comics sets including the highly anticipated 76261 Spider-Man Final Battle featuring all 3 Spider-Man from No Way Home!

Got a chance to see a preliminary model of 76261 a few months ago, and while the minifigure lineup is impressive, the model is absolutely tiny.

Venomised Groot is super cute, and the Batwing is an absolute winner at this scale and price.

This is LEGO 40364 Icons of Play, a set celebratin This is LEGO 40364 Icons of Play, a set celebrating some of the most accomplished female football players.

It features minifigures of @samanthakerr20, @mrapinoe, @yuki_nagasato and @asisat_oshoala, and is set to be released on 6 June 2023!

I read some extremely disgusting misogynistic comments on this set, from the usual terminally-online, incel-esque dudebros who probably need to get out a little.

Women's football is on the up and up, with exponential growth in game attendance, and TV viewership, and this is really smart timing on LEGO's part, releasing this just before the FIFA Women's World Cup starts.

Women's football has massive grassroots support, and is a hugely popular sport for young girls, the very builders of tomorrow that LEGO is continually trying to inspire.

LEGO is even a sponsor of the Australian national women's team @thematildas!

It's not even a bad set, and will integrate nicely into LEGO City, with clear references to the popular Football theme from the early 2000s.

Still, it's very disappointing (but not surprising) to see large LEGO pages continue to encourage and not take a stronger stance against sexism and misogyny.

Do better with your influence and reach.
