LEGO Insiders is live! Here’s how to earn points by registering your sets!

LEGO Insiders, the newly identity of the LEGO VIP Program (RIP) has finally gone live on LEGO.com!

You can check out the new and snazzy LEGO Insiders at https://lego.com/insiders!

As reported on last week, LEGO have rebranded their VIP Program to LEGO Insiders, but thankfully, most of the program will stay the same. You’ll still earn points on purchases, and can redeem points for $ off your next purchase, or exclusive rewards!

One of the most anticipated new features of LEGO Insiders is the ability to register your sets, by scanning a unique QR code found on your instruction manuals, to earn 20 points per set registered.

How to earn 20 LEGO Points by scanning and registering your sets

First, you’ll need the LEGO Builder App (available on Google Play or Apple App Store) in order to begin collecting points.

Here’s a step by step guide on how you can begin earning Points by scanning and registering your sets!

You’ll earn 20 points per set registered. Each QR code on the instructions manual is unique, so even if you have 5 or 10 or the same set, you can register each one of those by scanning their respective manuals.

Instructions manuals only go back to sets from 2018 onwards.

Note: Not all sets have QR codes. Brickheadz, GWP and selected LEGO Store exclusives like 40649 Up-Scaled LEGO Minifigure do not have QR codes on their manual.

1. Scan the QR Code with your smartphone

2. The Builder App will open – select “Earn Points”

Opening up your camera or QR code scanning app, scan the QR code which will generate a URL.

3. Confirm Registration of Set

Clicking the URL will automatically open the LEGO Builder App. Here, select the “Earn Points” button.

Clicking that button will send you back to the LEGO Insiders webpage, where you’ll be prompted to Register your set for 20 points. You will need to be logged into your LEGO Insiders account, and you’ll recognise your name there.

4. Success! 20 Points will be added to your Insiders account!

Once you click Register Your Sets, you’ll enjoy some digital confetti as the system confirms that you’ve earned 20 points!

It’s pretty smooth and I’m quite happy with how it works, so blitzing through dozens of manuals should be relatively easy.

LEGO Insiders Treasure Hunt – win 1 million LEGO Points

To celebrate the launch of LEGO Insiders, LEGO are also throwing a Treasure Hunt, an interactive sweepstakes that could net you 1 million LEGO Points!

Unfortunately, it’s not open worldwide, and you’ll need to be a resident in the following countries to qualify.

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • Denmark (not Greenland and the Faeroe Islands)
  • Metropolitan France (not French Overseas Departments or Territories, or Monaco)
  • Germany (not Heligoland)
  • New Zealand
  • South Korea
  • United Kingdom (excluding channel islands and the Isle of Man)
  • United States

Using augmented reality, the LEGO Insiders Treasure Hunt allows users to scan LEGO bricks either at home or in LEGO stores to try and find a golden LEGO brick and reveal a prize. What’s more, there is no limit on how many times a day you can hunt for bricks, making play more rewarding than ever.

Over the next six weeks until 6 October 2023, there will also be the opportunity for six people in each participating country to become a LEGO Points millionaire, winning [£7,000 / US$9000 / €8,200 / CAD$12,000 / AUD$13,250 / NZD$14,500 / DKK 60,500 / KRW 11475000] worth of points to spent in the LEGO Insiders Reward Center!

There are a total of 2,000,001 prizes to be won in a shared prize pool across participating countries. Winning Moments prizes consist of:

  • 1,6000,000 x Digital Download of a LEGO colouring sheet (1 of 8 varieties available allocated at random)
  • 100,001 x Code Redemption for an exclusive Torso in the LEGO Tower App
  • 100,000 x Digital Comic Book – LEGO Star Wars
  • 100,000 x Digital Comic Book – LEGO Spider-man
  • 100,000 x Digital Comic Book – LEGO Batman

It’s not too shabby, and I was pleased that the Augmented Reality scanning worked well when I tested it out.

Will you be scanning your manuals for points? Let me know how many points you’re going to get by registering your sets!

  1. Stacey Biller says:

Is it at all possible to get Lego insider points by using their product number? I am curious because I have a set that does not have a QR code, but when I looked on the Lego website I found the same set and there was a spot that stated an estimated value of points for Lego insiders. I looked around online and couldn’t find an answer so I’m hoping you might know since I’m new to this program! Thanks!!

  2. Jana says:

Sad that can’t scan Bricheadz and add in your list of your collection 😢

  3. Kelly says:

Where are the QR codes on a dot set?

  4. JP says:

I only have 5 sets with QR codes so it was quite quick to scan them. I didn’t use the app though. I used the QR scanner on my tablet, found the URL from that and then manually typed that in using my phone. I was already logged into the Lego website and then it was quick to register and get my points. I bit of hassle but think that was easier than going through the app which seems to have added steps. I can’t see a QR code on the daffodils set though or the advent calendars. I always find your website fun and informative. Thanks Jay.

  5. Tony Tomkins says:

As a follow up I have tried to register two sets. One showed up in the collection after about half an hour and the second has still not shown up over an hour later, so Ive given up

Life is too short for Lego IT!

  6. Amanda says:

I tried this but seems I cannot log in once I have scanned the qr code. It goes into a loop of logging in, accept cookies, redirect, login etc. I’m UK. Not impressed they have my data for nothing.

  7. Tony Tomkins says:

I don’t think much of the new app. Every time I scan a QR code in the app or even just with the phone camera I get sent to the survey. Even after completing the survey the set I scanned still does not show up in my collection! I must be missing something as other people seem to be able to do it.
FYI I am in Australia and following Jays instructions and the survey pops up every time I scan a code. The builder app does not appear and if I go the it manually there is no sign of my set!
    Not happy!

  8. Scott White says:

Thanks Jay, this info was REALLY useful. Am now fully in registration mode

  9. Graham says:

    Hey Jay,

I was happy/Neutral about the Insiders change, until I got an email from Lego warning me that my Insiders points would expire in 3 months…
Apparently its ‘in the terms and conditions for Insiders’, but since I never signed up FOR INSIDERS, its pretty rude.

I maintain two VIP accounts (one for NL where I live, one for AU where I sometimes buy presents for family. This setup was advised by Lego support.), and the AU one is warning me I need to make a purchase or forfeit my points…

    • Håkan says:

I’m not sure if this is due to the new Insiders setup, though. I think the forfeit rules have been applied for a couple of years, by now…

      • Håkan says:

As far as I can tell, there’s been an ’18 months expiration’ rule for many years by now. Before that, there was a similar rule as the points would expire ‘on December 31st a full year after earning them’.

  10. Felix says:

No earn the points button for me. Maybe it’s only open to limited area..

    • Håkan says:

      As stated in the article:

Unfortunately, it’s not open worldwide, and you’ll need to be a resident in the following countries to qualify.

      Australia
      Canada
Denmark (not Greenland and the Faeroe Islands)
Metropolitan France (not French Overseas Departments or Territories, or Monaco)
      Germany (not Heligoland)
      New Zealand
      South Korea
United Kingdom (excluding channel islands and the Isle of Man)
      United States

    • Anton says:

I had the same issue. I have a german VIP account, but right now I’m in another country.
I tried using VPN, switched my IP to Germany and the button appeared for me. It seems that they’re limiting this to just a few countries which is super frustrating.

  11. Mike says:

Not quite sure about the treasure hunt user experiences – every time I enter a code for a digital download nothing actually happens. Maybe I’m being a dummy and missing something obvious…

    • Andrew says:

Yep I thought the same. After entering the code you need to scroll down on the same page, and you’ll see that one random reward has changed status to ‘redeem’

  12. Brian Smyth says:

This is just brilliant I’m half waythru 100s of sets

    Some notes

If using iphone turn off privacy mode otherwise you have to sign in every single time
Only works on phone for me iPad doesn’t give option to collect points

I think it’s great to see all your sets in one place :))

  13. Lynn says:

The Treasure hunt is faulty: no matter which device we tried, every time my kid tried to scan a brick it switched from Canada English to Canada French! After using a different device to translate what was on the screen and pushing the “redeem” button, it again glitched and a blank screen appeared then it went back to the beginning. Complete dud.

  14. Shea Shea Bricks says:

Great article! Does anyone know where to see the sets registered after scanning them to your account? I can’t find them on the Lego website. Tyvm

    • Akedo says:

Hi, I can see them in the Lego Builder app. It also tells you how many sets you have scanned and how many pieces. It doesn’t count multiple copies of sets, eg, The Beatles x 4 (but you still get the points for them.) I found it more tedious to scan through the Lego Builder app with having to do the maths equation each time, so I uninstalled it and just scanned through the website, and then reinstalled the app. Very happy to get an extra 1000 points, and thanks for all the excellent articles, Jay.

  15. jjava says:

Unfortunately a lot of sets that I have built doesn’t have any QR code. I have tons of unopened sets of course but am so very slow in getting the time to build them.

  16. Andrew says:

I keep all my instruction books. Spent roughly an hour scanning around 75 of them, using the phone QR scan app. It found every set and the process is fairly quick, apart from the fact it opens a new browser window each time which seems unnecessary.

In Australia, 20 points is worth about 22c, so that’s an hour to generate about $17 of savings. Up to you whether you think that’s a good use of your time ;).

  17. Jeff Cooper says:

None of my instruction have QR codes

  18. ABrickDreamer says:

I can scan the qr codes, but there is no option to earn the points.
I guess it has something to do with the region you are in. I’m currently in Singapore, but I have a vip account in another country.
I’m pretty sure there will be lots of complaints, if they announce this new program, they should make sure that is accessible everywhere or clearly state otherwise

    • Craig says:

I can’t see the earn points option either. I wonder if it’s restricted only To certain countries for some reason. Frustrating.

  19. RazorBrickz says:

Keeping the instruction manuals was worth it after all! On the other hand… I wonder how long it’ll take for BrickLink sellers to realize that they can (potentially) scan the instructions they are selling in their store for some points. Maybe those eBay Lego instruction manual listings will receive a bit more attention.
You bet I’ll be scanning my Lego bricks! Such a convenient way to procrastinate rebuilding (for the 3rd time) my Lego TF RBA Cube MOC. At least it’s only 200+ pieces.

  20. Dallas Call says:

Thanks for the update. I won the Spider-man comic on my first scan.

  21. Euanita Brush says:

Hi, this is awesome. Do I keep the points I’ve already accumulated? What about sets I’ve already got registered on the Builder app? A lot of my sets are older and do not have QR codes on the manuals.

    • Jay Ong says:

Yes, your VIP Points and account should all carry over.

For sets you’ve registered on Builder App, you’ll need to re-register them if you want the 20 points each.

Only sets after 2017/2018 have QR codes, so unfortunately, you won’t be able to register sets older than that.

  22. Corey McCandless says:

Just finished registering almost 150 sets, thought I would share some info I picked up along the way:

    – It seems QR codes started showing up around 2017/2018, but were inconsistent
    – Some large “adult” sets ditch QR codes for a decorative cover (James Bond Aston Martin, Ship in a Bottle (re-release), Everyone is Awesome, etc)
    – Most Brickheadz do not have QR codes
    – GWPs and Brick Sketches do not have codes

Important note for anyone having trouble scanning codes: the built-in QR code scanner in the app was unable to scan several sets, but using the built-in scanner in my phone’s camera worked just fine all codes. I’ve got an Android phone, but this would work on iPhone as well.

    • Jay Ong says:

Thanks for sharing your findings! How did you find the overall speed registering 100+ sets?

      • Corey says:

It was slow; the need to verify my age/humanity via a math problem for every single scan was incredibly tedious. I highly recommend watching TV or something meanwhile.

        • DREADBRICKS says:

You did well doing all those – it sounds a bit of a nightmare to me but you’ve encouraged me to give it a go when I’m next at a loose end.

  23. Andrew says:

    So a poly bag = 20 points
And say Eiffel Tower = 20 points?

  24. Nick says:

    LEGO Points millionaire wins US$9000
    So $9000 divided by 1000000 = $0.009

Assuming that’s how the economy of the points system works (and that’s a big assumption without knowing more)
Each set registered for 20 points is worth 18 cents , and 100 sets would be $18 (don’t spend it all at once 😛 )

  25. Bill says:

Treasure hunt is a complete dud – the web app to scan bricks can’t focus, and registers legitimate bricks as fake bricks. Total faceplant on day one does not bode well!

  26. Steve says:

Got a lot of mine registered-about 10 or so wouldn’t read the QR code, mostly the lighter printed ones from newer sets. Made notes of which to try again after they hopefully get some of the bugs worked out.

    • Corey says:

For the lighter printed ones, use your phone’s camera app to scan the codes instead of the app. I found the app’s scanner incapable of scanning several codes that the phone’s default scanner had to trouble with.

  27. Ginny Park says:

    Hi Jay,
Do you know if we can register Advent calendars to get 20 points? There’s a QR code on my 2022 calendar inside the flap, but it just takes me to the Lego website page with play instructions. Thanks!

  28. Rosie DeLavergne says:

I am already in the Lego group. I have been in there for a lot of years. Me and my husband loves to do Legos. We do not make a lot of money so we can only get something once in awhile. Can you send me an email so I know how much money my points can help me? You guys changed the points or something cause I was told that my VIP card does not work anymore. So put me in that contest to win and I would be very happy if I won.

  29. Chris Plehal says:

I haven’t been able to find the QR code on BrickHeadz. Are they not eligible for registration?

  30. Bob Gruner says:

The Treasure Hunt scan did not work for me after trying multiple bricks. Very frustrating.

  31. Nancy says:

Jay, tried the register sets with my current in work – Eiffel Tower. No code!! WTH??

  32. So is there no way to do this without a phone?

    • James Wynne says:

I used my tablet to register my sets if that helps.

    • Jay Ong says:

Technically you can, but it’s cumbersome.

If you have a computer, and have a webcam/app to scan the QR code, you should be able to get the URL off the manual, click on it, it sends you straight through to the Register Your set page, and if you’re signed in, you can claim 20 points immediately

      • Adrian says:

Great article on how it all works. I might try using both phone and webcam to see if one is quicker/easier than the other.

  33. LeAnne White says:

My son has been trying for over 30 minutes and every Lego brick he tries no matter top or bottom he gets an oops message. The AI scanner is not working for us at all.

    • Jay Ong says:

Try in a bright room and in a plain background if possible. It took me a while, but I found that it helped when I went in as close as I could, and the camera focused on the studs, or bottom of the bricks.

  34. Carly McCarter says:

I’m confused, what do you get by registering sets? Are these points the same as (former) VIP points that you can use for discounts?

I guess I’m just wondering why you would “register” manuals that you already bought under the VIP account, and why would Lego give out more points for things they already know you own.

    • Nick says:

“why would Lego give out more points for things they already know you own”
I know the surveillance society we live in has gotten pretty hardcore, but Lego doesn’t know about most the sets I own.

    • Jay Ong says:

Hey Carly, yes, these are the same points. It’s a small bonus to incentivise fans to register their sets, presumably for data gathering purposes and for LEGO to get a better idea of what sets are popular.

Not every set is bought from a LEGO Store, or from LEGO’s online website, so in theory this gives LEGO a good idea of sets bought outside of its own sales channel.

Plus, it’s a nice way to earn a few meagre points if you choose to shop elsewhere.

  35. James Wynne says:

    Dear Jay,
Thank you for your insightful article.
I had no idea of LEGO Insiders.
People used to laugh at me for holding on to the boxes and instruction manuals-now who is laughing 😂
I have registered 5 sets already but it will take some time to register all eligible sets.
    Thank you again.

  36. James Clasby says:

If you are a VIP MEMBER do you have to rejoin Insiders?

  37. Tony Galloro says:

I disagree with the sentiment that it’s quick. It should all be handled in the app and not redirect to a browser for each scan or ask a math problem for every scan.

  38. Jay Lane says:

This is an awesome primer. Thanks for putting it together. I’m not sure that I would have paid attention to registering my sets. I’ve already scanned a few to make sure it works. It’s pretty cool that you can add your sets to the app to see your collection.
