LEGO Voltron and Ship In A Bottle, The Flagship Leviathan are your next LEGO Ideas sets!
Early this morning, the LEGO Ideas team announced the Third 2016 Review Results on their blog, and the results should delight a pretty big swath of LEGO fans!
Ship In A Bottle, The Flagship Leviathan, a project by JakeSadovich77 has been given the green light to be produced as a LEGO Ideas set! The Ship In A Bottle project, as its name suggests is an entirely brick built ship in a bottle.
This has all the hallmarks of a great, adult-targeted LEGO Ideas set, with what looks to be a really interesting and unique build, with plenty of cool technical challenges to overcome. Not to mention it being primarily a display model, which is right up my alley!
I was really excited when I read the news this morning, as The Flagship Leviathan was one of my preferences to win from the previous review period.
My favourite, the 1950s Diner unfortunately didn’t make the cut, as did my 3rd choice, The Iron Giant. All in all, this looks set to be a really sweet set that makes excellent use of a LEGO Ideas set slot.
There’s no other details on the Ship In A Bottle’s final design, release date or even pricing, but we should find out in early 2018!
More excitingly… LEGO have ALSO announced that Voltron – Defender of the Universe will also be a LEGO Ideas set! The project, designed by len_d69 was put on hold previously, probably due to LEGO needed extra time to negotiate the license.
As I kinda expected, the extra time and uncertainty did pay off in spades and I’m really delighted that there’ll be an honest to goodness LEGO set. I’m personally very happy because I’m a big fan of both the classic cartoon series, as well as the new Netflix version. I don’t think this LEGO Ideas set will set the world on fire, as the set’s appeal is quite narrow and targeted at fans of the series.
Even though Voltron was a massive pop culture phenomenon in the 80s, and there were quite a number of non-hardcore LEGO friends who messaged me exclaiming with excitement about news of the set.
My prediction is that the set will sell moderately well like other nostalgia/pop culture LEGO Ideas sets (Doctor Who, Big Bang Theory) but it probably won’t set the world on fire outside of Voltron fans.
All in all, I feel like this wave of LEGO Ideas announcements was a really good one, with something for the AFOL crowd, as well as something for the 80s nostalgia bunch who may not be traditional or hardcore fans of LEGO.
Lastly, the LEGO Ideas team also revealed the sets from the First 2017 LEGO Review (they really need to rename these. Use seasons maybe?) of which the results will be announced sometime in Autumn 2017 (that’s Spring for us antipodeans).
Honestly, it seems like a fairly weak lineup and I don’t think any set will pass.
If I had to pick one, my heart wants the Medieval Watermill, but I think the Sega Classic Arcade Machines have the best shot, especially that LEGO already has a relationship with Sega through Sonic in LEGO Dimensions. My money’s still on no projects being greenlit, though, given that we got Voltron in this round.
What do you think of the results and which LEGO Ideas set are you most excited about? Were you disappointed that any of your favourites didn’t make the cut? Let me know in the comments!
