Review: LEGO 30584 Winter Holiday Train Polybag

It’s 2022, and as the onslaught of pricey LEGO sets continues, it’s becoming harder and harder visualise cheap LEGO sets in your head.

Polybags have kinda fallen out of fashion, but they remain great accessible alternatives for builders on a budget, or great stocking stuffers/gifts as we head into the holiday season.

With Christmas coming up, I spotted this cute polybag at my local LEGO Store in Melbourne, and wasted no time picking it up, as I love all things seasonal, and so here’s a quick review of this charming 73-piece set that costs only AU$5.99 / US$4.99!

In Australia, you’ll be able to find 30584 Winter Holiday Train from the LEGO Certified Store, and in the US, it’s listed on Target’s website, but you might also be able to pick one up from your local LEGO Store.

LEGO have had a long-storied history of releasing Winter/Christmas trains of all shapes and sizes, with the largest being 2016’s 10254 Winter Holiday Train, which in itself was a remake of 10173 Holiday Train.

I’m glad that the 30584 Winter Holiday Train polybag makes a return in 2022 to give us another pint-sized take on the Christmas train.

At 72-pieces, this really was a fun way to spend a few minutes and is also very kid-friendly as there aren’t too many tricky techniques or fiddly bits.

For a polybag the same price as a LEGO Minifigures blind bag, you’re getting a lot of bang for your buck with a red and black locomotive, a present car, and a passenger car at the back.

The first thing that grabs you is the colour-palette – staple Christmas colours are present on the classic locomotive, with pops of gold against red, black and a bright green round plate up front giving an immediate festive feel.

The proportions are really nice, and I also like the curved white roof, and also the cab, which has gaps for the doors which are cleverly fashioned out negative space.

Right behind the locomotive, instead of a coal tender, we have 2 presents!

And right at the back there is a passenger car, with trans-clear bricks windows, a black door – I love the way the white contrasts against the green walls.

And if you wanted to know how it looks next to a US$499.99 Hogwarts Express, here’s a side by side. Crazy to think that the big version is 100x the price!

What I liked:

• A fun and affordable build
• Great colours
• Very easy to display

What I didn’t like: 

• Polybags can sometimes be hard to find

FINAL THOUGHTS:

For AU$5.99, 30584 Winter Holiday Train packs a ton of value and delivers plenty of holiday-themed LEGO building fun without breaking the bank.

The colours and overall size were particularly satisfactory, and I can see this being a cute little thing to display when you start decorating your home for Christmas. It’s small enough to go nearly everywhere, and the fun colour palette helps it give off festive Christmas vibes.

If you have a LEGO Winter Village, it could easily fit in, maybe as an in-universe large Christmas Train model for Winter Villagers to admire.

For the same price as a Collectible Minifigure blind bag, this delivers a much more complete and satisfying LEGO experience, and can heartily recommend it as a quick impulse build, or festive gift if you can get your hands on the polybag!
