LEGO 40659 Mini Steamboat Willie GWP revealed to have mechanical functions!

LEGO’s website has officially revealed that the next gift with purchase (GWP) which will be Disney 100-themed! Here’s a look at 40659 Mini Steamboat Willie, which celebrates the iconic black and white animated short which introduced Mickey Mouse to the world.

UPDATE: I can now confirm that 40659 Mini Steamboat Willie will be available from 23-31 October 2023, when you spend  US$100 / AU$170 / £95 / €100 / CAD$140 on LEGO Disney, Marvel and Star Wars  on LEGO.com.

We don’t have an official release date for the Mini Steamboat Willie just yet, but thanks to a Thai LEGO Certified Store, it’ll be safe to expect from 23 October onwards, right after the promotional period for 40597 Scary Pirate Island (the current GWP) ends.

As it’s Disney 100-themed, it will also be reasonable to expect that you’ll have to LEGO Disney sets to qualify for it.

One of the interesting features about this mini LEGO Steamboat Willie set is that the paddle wheel on the steamboat rotates and moves the steam pipes up and down, likely with the use of wheels and Technic elements on the inside which is impressive for a set this size.

This set of course is a miniaturised version of the 2019 LEGO Ideas version, 21317 Steamboat Willie, which also shares the mechanical functions.

It’s a really iconic model and so important to Disney that it makes sense that LEGO and Disney would bring it back, as a smaller GWP to celebrate Disney’s 100th anniversary.

And here’s a look at the Mickey Mouse minifigure which has slightly different all-grey legs, compared to the Disney Series 2 version, or the one from 21317 Steamboat Willie.

We’re still knee-deep in LEGO’s Double Insider Points offer, as well as 40597 Scary Pirate Island, but expect to get more official information about 40659 Mini Steamboat Willie closer to the final week of October 2023!
