Review: LEGO 5008325 Dungeons & Dragons Mimic Dice Box GWP (gift with purchase)

LEGO and Wizards of the Coast officially unveiled 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale, one of the most anticipated sets of 2024, and you’re going to want to make plans to pick the set up when it launches on 1 April 2024.

To entice fans to drop US$359.99 / AU$499.99 for the massive 3,745-piece LEGO Dungeons and Dragons set (check out the official reveal for more photos), LEGO will be offering a special GWP (gift with purchase) at launch – a buildable LEGO D&D Mimic Dice Box!

If you order 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale from 1-7 April, you may receive the LEGO D&D Mimic Dice Box while stocks last, and trust me, with the popularity of the big D&D set, I expect this to sell out in record time.

Thanks to LEGO, I can share a quick review of the Mimic Dice Box GWP, ahead of my full review of 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale which will be published tomorrow!

See below for regional pricing and product pages for the LEGO D&D set

5008325 LEGO Dungeons & Dragons Mimic Dice Box Set Details

Set Name: LEGO Dungeons & Dragons Mimic Dice Box
Set number: 5008325
Pieces: 168
GWP Threshold: Free with purchase of 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale
GWP Redemption Period: 1-7 April 2024
Theme: GWP, Dungeons and Dragons

The Mimic Dice Box comes with a special yellow box, which is bad news because it is an indicator that there will be very limited numbers of these sets produced.

This Yellow GWP Box is reserved for very limited run GWPs, with the most infamous one being the Ulysses Space Probe, which caused a lot of anguish amongst fans who missed out, so much so that LEGO brought it back again, a whole year later.

Here’s a look at the contents. The instruction manual has its own slot, and doubles as the box cover, and unlike regular LEGO sets, the parts for the Mimic Dice Box come in a large ziploc bag.

This is a tell-tale sign that there will be limited numbers of these, as sets that come in ziploc bags like these are usually packed by hand, or manually, and not in typical LEGO manufacturing lines, which produced sealed numbered plastic bags.

The build was quick, but quite a pleasant experience. It’s quite sizeable, measuring 10-studs wide.

It’s designed to be a dice box, but even if you don’t have a need to store your D20s, it makes for a compact decorative model, with some interactivity as you can open and close its mouth.

That and you can also store other small items in it.

Looking closer, you’ll notice that the Mimic’s eyes are printed, which is a nice sign, and the bright blue tongue sticks out in a menacing fashion.

Here’s a look at the Mimic Dice Box from different angles.

And here’s a look at its tongue, which can stick out, or be folded in.

The Mimic does look kinda funny without its tongue!

And here’s a bunch of D20s inside it. There’s quite a lot of space, and I managed to fix 6 regular-sized D20s and one small one till it couldn’t take any more.

That’s one very full Mimic!

Of course, apart from it being a Dice Box, you can of course, incorporate it into your LEGO D&D campaigns as a supersized mimic! Here it is being ganged up on by the D&D party.

And for a better comparison, here it is next to the minifigure-scale Mimic found in 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale.

Final Thoughts:

This is a really neat LEGO Gift with Purchase that greatly complements the 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale set, and also appeals to those that play D&D or have a need to store their massive hoard of dice.

It was designed by Jordan Scott, LEGO Ideas Design Manager, who himself is a massive DnD fan, and while he didn’t get to personally design the huge Ideas set, jumped at the opportunity to design a D&D set, which is how this set came about.

It will irk fans who aren’t quite in a position to drop US$359.99 at launch to pick up 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale, and I do admit that this would be a great sell at the US$20 pricepoint, however it’s pertinent to remember that GWPs are little bonus sets that normally would not be able to be made otherwise.

Plus, it feels like a decent-enough reward for diehard LEGO and D&D fans to buy the set at launch. Lest we forget that when Rivendell launched, all we got were some Brickheadz, so this feels like a much nicer thanks to the fans.

I do have real concerns about the Limited Edition nature of this set, and I really hope that LEGO have forecasted demand for this GWP and made enough to go around, but seeing this Yellow Box doesn’t fill me with much confidence, and so if this is something that you’d really like, I’d be waiting for the clock to hit midnight to give you the best chance of securing yours.

Don’t hesitate, because this will sell out really quickly, along with 21348 Dungeons & Dragons: Red Dragon’s Tale when it launches for LEGO Insiders on 1 April 2024.

Rating and score: 4/5 ★★★★✰

I have a parts list for the set, but cannot find a set of the instructions online. Any thoughts on where I might be able to get a PDF of the instructions for this set?

  2. Studless says:

You can’t share pictures of the instructions right?

I managed to get pictures of the parts list, made a BL wanted list, sent it to a rebrickable admin who listed it (and added a placeholder for the eyes, the only new and exclusive part to it) and hence the parts list is also on brickset ^^ but instructions are a whole different thing and being a yellow box I’m sure Lego won’t release them on pdf. I bet I could build it from the inventory and your detailed review (as it’s not a big set) but unfortunately I’m missing about 60 pieces to build it (with other eyes) and I can’t run studio so I just can’t make instructions.

Happy we are getting a cmf series and hopping they sell a smaller set with the beholder (or a different take on it) and other monsters

I am in the same boat. If I manage to find a set of the instructions online, I’ll let you know.

      • Studless says:

Once I got most of the parts I managed to build it from review pictures but there’s a good stop motion build by Helweg Bricks on youtube

  3. Do you know if this GWP will be in the stores too, as well as online?

  4. Draco says:

Why does it have a blue tongue? Honestly, this is kinda weak compared to JK Brickworks’ version or even the non-lego versions you can get on Amazon for $15.

    • Studless says:

In some depictions of the Mimic the tongue tip is blue while the rest of the inside of the mouth is purple.. I would have chosen another kind of blue but probably that’s the closer kind of blue lego currently produces all those pieces in.

  5. R0Sch says:

Thanks for the detailed review. With this I’ll be able to reverse engineer the set and post the Studio file on Eurobricks for anyone to be able to rebrick it.

  6. Erin says:

I really like this and the main set, which I’ve been looking forward to for ages.
It’s a pity that this is so limited , especially given the high chance that the main set may not be easily available from the Australian online store at time of release. I have noticed many of the large adult-orientated sets this year are marked as sold out within hours of the release date, with no option to back order available for weeks to months. Similar situation applies to the certified stores.
I appreciate that the main set will eventually become available and it’s great for Lego that their products appear to be in such high demand, but frustrating when there are very tight windows for certain things. I’d be very happy if they released instructions, so those of us who are likely to miss out could cobble together this likely-to-be- popular GWP rather than relying on having to reverse-engineer from photos!

    • Jay Ong says:

A lot of this has to do with shipping delays. There’s been a backlog of ships and containers at Australian ports, and I reckon the Red Sea issues haven’t been helping either.

It’s pretty frustating, also for LEGO and the retailers as they can’t keep sets in stock, and the shelves look pretty bare these days.

I will aim to share instructions at launch!

      • Studless says:

I somehow missed this before asking 🤦‍♂️ thank you!

I’m missing 66 pieces and I already have them on their way but I don’t expect them until next week since the Spaniard postal service will now close 5 days in a row (for religious holidays) 🤷‍♂️

  7. Jesse Wade says:

Is the keyhole tile printed or a sticker?

  8. That’s a Gatecrash D20
