LEGO Power Rankings – April 2021

We’re four months down in 2021, and so far so good! We’ve had a superb start to the year LEGO-wise, with some great surprises, but also some frustrating moments thanks to the fiasco that was the VIP Ulysses Probe launch

Still, April was lot of fun, and we’re really starting to build up momentum for the year! Don’t forget, LEGO Star Wars Days 2021 offers are also live now!

If you want to catch up on previous Power Rankings, check out March February and January 2021 Power Rankings to get up to speed on highlights from the first 3 months of 2021.

April 2021 had a surprising number of new releases, beginning with the NASA Space Shuttle Discovery on April Fool’s Day, and a massive wave of medium and small releases in late-April in the lead-up to Star Wars Day.

A high number of releases (compared to a relatively quiet March 2021) means quite a number of movements in the Power Rankings, with 2 new entrants – the Space Shuttle and Looney Tunes Minifigures making their debut at number 5 and 9 respectively, which meant that Series 21 and the Porsche 911 have fallen off the Top 10.

The Top 4 is relatively unscathed, but we’ll see how long that lasts until another exceptional set rolls around.

What are Power Rankings?

Essentially, they’re commonly used in sports leagues like the NBA to track and compare the best/worst performing teams, often changing weekly based on results and how teams play.

I often get asked via email or on social media what the best sets of the (insert current) year/month are, and I usually rattle off what I personally like, so to start 2021, I’ve decided to start a regular series where I track and rank what the best 10 LEGO sets are at the end of each month.

This isn’t meant to be scientific or data-driven (some of these I haven’t personally built/own yet) – just my personal opinion of what I think are the best LEGO sets of 2021!

Of course, for a more comprehensive evaluation of LEGO sets, you can read my LEGO reviews for more detailed opinions. For sets that I’ve reviewed, I’ll also include the scores next to the power rankings, but it’s quite unlikely that I’ll get to review every amazing set of 2021 – I sometimes build and miss out reviewing due to time/scheduling issues.

LEGO April Fool’s 2021

After a harrowing year, and some small return to normalcy, I really enjoyed the return to LEGO goofs and gags from LEGO sites and fan media across the web.

My contribution was LEGO requiring proof of age ID when you purchase 18+ sets which got a surprising amount of my readers and beyond!

Launched a new LEGO podcast – Extra Pieces!

This has been 2-years in the making, but I launched a new LEGO podcast with fellow blogger Rambling Brick. It’s called Extra Pieces, and it’s a collaboration between the two of us, where we chat about the state of LEGO, what we’ve built recently, our mutual appreciation of vintage LEGO and all the extra pieces that make up the LEGO hobby.

We’ve recently gone live with Episode 2, so if you’re looking for a new LEGO podcast, be sure to subscribe and give it a listen. Keep an eye out because we have a special Star Wars Day episode dropping on May the 4th!

For everyone that has subscribed and been listening, thank you so much! It’s been a lot of fun recording with Richard, and we hope to get better at this podcast thing!
